“Ideal apartments 19th September 2013”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We visited the Ideal apartments as a couple 19th September for 2 weeks. Apartments excellent size and very clean. The ones on the lower level are fine and are not disgusting as mentioned in a previous review. Electric kettles new for this year – no toaster so we took a £5 toaster and passed in on when we left. No need for air con in late September. Staff very friendly. Nice pool bar and poolside area. Excellent taverna attached – we ate here 4 times in the fortnight. Very good meze- Bekri meze and fried courgettes were the best in resort. 5 Euros ½ carafe of wine, 3 Euros a pint. Many Greek and English meals available and wonderful pizza. Good Location in the centre of Kokkini Hani. Children are made to feel welcome but the holiday is really geared towards couples – not much for children to do except the beach. Not many mosquitoes around which was a bonus.

Some great tavernas around which I have reviewed separately and a lovely cake shop and bakery over the road. Our favourite bar was the Whisky bar on the front promenade next to Aroma Meze. Fiona and Paul will make you feel welcome there. They are a normal bar as well as whiskies and their coffee and Metaxa provided a nice end to many meals. They are very reasonably priced too. Excellent kebab place over the round called Bis Bis - you eat in or takeway back to the apartment - kebab meat is the best we have ever tried and their Chicken slouvaki pitta.

Kokkini is not the prettiest place we have ever stayed but has a nice feel – many Greeks live here. It is very handy for regular, cheap buses going left to Heraklion (takes 20mins) and right to Hersonissos (takes 30mins) Stalis and Malia (40mins) and Agios Nikolaos (1hr). These are coach type buses and they stop very near to the apartments.

The best beach is to the right of the Ideal. Keep walking for 10mins until you see the sign for Chrysanthi apartments on the other side of the road. Walk down the dirt road for 5mins to the front. To the right are around 7 cafes and tavernas with free sun loungers as long as you by a drink with them. We used Avra and Paxomi – the food was brilliant in both of these. The beach is sandy and sheltered, but the sea can be a little choppy at times but still safe. You can just make out the airport down the coast and planes fly overhead which is a novelty. You can also reach this beach by cutting through the Themis Hotel and walking along the coast.

Overall this was a great holiday and we will return one day with firends in tow.

Room Tip: The higher rooms do have better outlooks but all the rooms looked good to us.

Stayed here 05/09/13 through 12/09/13.

We can only echo other reviews about the Ideal apartments here on T/a. Very clean , small and friendly.

The staff at this place are super friendly and quickly get to know all there guests as it is family run and the family live at the apartments so can keep a close eye on things.

If you decide to eat here you will not be dissapointed especially if you order anything from the wood fired oven.... a word of caution.... the pizzas are HUGE and beautiful so its best to order one of the medium pizzas ( as the large will not fit on the table) and share it...

Good location for exploring. Lovely beach about 5 mins walk away and only 5 € for 2sunbeds and parasol all day... In Ibiza last year12 € for the same..... Kokkini hani small and compact. If you get the chance visit the Whisky bar on the small promenade about 10 mins walk away to the left of the apartments

Cool poolside bar with a very friendly dutch couple who run it... 100% recommend Ideal apartments... If you have booked for next year and have not been before you WILL NOT be dissapointed....

Thank you Ideal for a wonderful week in the very hot sun and the very nice dry white wine....

Any questions just message me and I will try to answer them.....

Room Tip: Rear of the apartments, sun in morning, cooler in evening....

I stayed here with my other half in early September for a week and we both had a pleasant holiday.

The hotel is only 15 minutes away from the airport so very quick transfers. We stayed at the back of the hotel in a double appartment which had a large living/kitchen area and a spacious bedroom.

The only problems I had with our room is that we were in an appartment that was below ground level (still had windows but was that of a basement flat etc) and our bathroom window wasn't frosted, SO, whenever having a shower or going to toilet anyone walking by could have a nice peer in. Thankfully due to being at the back of the hotel not many people walked by.. still puts you a bit on edge when standing in the shower!!

Our room also had a slight outburst of small ants by the window (probably another factor of being below groundlevel) but after a hefty spray of insect repellant they dissappeared very quickly and didn't return.

The rooms don't have a hair dryer and the hotel doesn't offer one to rent... So any ladies like me who have a lot of long missbehaving hair may find that a problem! I automatically assumed that every hotel had one so didn't bring my own... Bad mistake.

The aircon is 7Euros a day, we tried sleeping without it for the first night and it was seriously muggy and very uncomfortable. Definitely worth the investment.

The food at the hotel I was really impressed with for value. Its very cheap and has a lot of variety from traditional Greek dishes, seafood and general burgers and chips. A burger and chips tended to cost 4.50 Euros. A full english breakfast is 7Euros.

To buy a large bottle of water at the hotel is 2Euros which was the most expensive we ever saw. If you go down the road to the supermarket a 1.5Ltr bottle will cost you 32cents. Even the shop right next door the water is 70cents.

The owners were very friendly and spoke good English. If you like your coffees I would reccomend the "cappuccino" that they serve. It's more like an Americano.

Overall the hotel is in a really good area. There are other restaurants a short walk away (about 5-10 minutes or so), a bus stop with regualr trips to the city is just 3 mins walk away. It will cost you 1.60 to get to Heraklion. The beaches in Kokkini Hani are LOVELY. I'd reccomend walking down to Knossos beach and purchasing a pair of sun loungers here.

Overall, we paid very little for our holiday through Thomsons although if you haven't yet booked I would try and book direct with the hotel. We could have saved about £100 between us if we'd done that ourselves.

Very pleased with our trip over all :)

Room Tip: Request one above ground, the bar area is open till late and does play constant music.

I cant really recommend Ideal enough, after 2 fantastic weeks in June we would love to return next year.

Location:

Very close to a clean and sandy beach, if you are prepared to walk a little further there are sun loungers offered free if you eat or have a single drink at the various restaurants. Now usually you' ll be paying 5 Euros a day for each lounger so this offer is great. We walked to the beach at around 11am and were still easily able to get the a spot right by the sea

There is a patisserie right opposite which is real trouble as you cant keep out of it and this from gymaholic people who watch their weight.

There are a variety of supermarkets, bars, car hire, restaurants and souvenir shops within a minutes walk.

Ideal is bang in the middle of the main stretch of Konini Hani, so perfect which ever direction you want to go.

Accommodation:

The rooms are very big, very clean and very cheap. The rooms stay cool without air con even if the temperatures are high outside. Its basic self catering apartments, you have a kettle, plates, hob, pans etc.

The pool is great, small, clean and not too deep for those with children. There was always sun loungers free at any point in the day.

The Staff:

The family that own the hotel are great, they made us feel part of the family from day one and we felt sad to leave. George, Panagelis, Maria and all the staff never stop, they endeavour to make your stay enjoyable. We had problems when our card was swallowed by an ATM and they allowed us to use our other card with them instead of risking it with another card.

The bar staff- We made great friends in Wim, Rhian and their son Willem. They truly did make our holiday what it was and that is the best ever. They treated us so well whilst at work and met up with us later like true friends. I can not praise these folks enough. They work hard to make sure that the pool area is clean and will even make things not normally on the menu if they can. They are great, great people. Wim was probably fed up of beating me at chess though in the end lol. we have kept in contact with them and offered them our home to stay if they ever visit the UK, that is how highly we regard them.

Food:

We ate most nights at the Ideal, the quality, selection and price was great. yet again the staff endeavour to make your dining experience as good as possible. The home made food is delicious and some of the best Greek food we have ever eaten. The pizzas are awesome too!! Freshly made bread and Meze was our fav tho.

There are lots of sea front restaurants to further to the left of the Ideal and some of these are really good and watching the sunset over the sea whilst eating is a great experience. The fish restaurant owned and run by a greek family all year is amazing, the staff and owner are brilliant.

Beach:

Lots of small sections of beach all very clean and great restaurants serving drinks on the beach, I would recommend walking a little further to the right as you get to the beach as the first is part of an all inclusive and not much food on offer.

All in all we had the best summer holiday we have ever had, we have been to 5* all inclusive hotels around the world and self catering as well but the Ideal bettered them all in service and price.

We very much hope to return in the near future.

Yiamas!

Room Tip: Beds can be a little hard but there are blankets which you can put underneath to soften them, after...

Just got back from a great time at these apartments.
Warm welcome from the family which continued all week.
Very quiet room area and spacious apartment .Air con is a must if you visit in August.
Ate 3 times in the restaurant and we were very pleased with the meals and price. You can get good meals else where but I am not going to recommend,as part of the fun of being on holiday is to find your own.
Close to the beach and 5euros for 2 sunbeds and parasol all day was good value for money.
Spar shop has all you need and cheap.
An enjoyable time and hope to return.

this is our first time staying at the ideal apartments in kokkini hanie in crete. we booked this apartment after reading the excellent reviews on trip advisor. as a family and a couple we have travelled to many places and have stayed in luxury hotels.
We would recommend these apartments they are super clean, we opted for bed and breakfast and did on occasion up grade to a full english which was excellent. It is run by a family who are very friendly and kind. The food was also excellent, we stayed for 7 nights and every 2nd day the rooms were cleaned and change of towels and bed linen. will most certainly re visit again.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 104 which was on the second floor very quiet and spacious

My partner and I stayed here for two weeks in July this year. We had a great time! The family who run the apartments are very welcoming and hard working. Our apartment was spacious, airy and very clean. Originally we were in a room over the bar but as we found this a bit noisy we asked to move. Maria was only too happy to accommodate us and moved us to a quieter room at the back which suited us much better. Most days we went to the beach but the pool is lovely and the Dutch couple who run the pool bar were great. They were always helpful and friendly with lots of good advice about the local area. We enjoyed all the homemade restaurant food and especially the pizza made in the wood burning oven.
Overall this was a charming place to stay. This is an authentic family run business with real people who take pride in their business and care about their customers. We would definitely go back.
