“lovely relaxing holiday”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Had a lovely relaxing holiday at the ideal apartments, food was excellent in the restaurant, the apartment was very spacious. Really good bus route not far from the ideal, dont be affraid to use them they are very comfortable the air con was very welcoming. We did not use the air con in the apartment as it was 7 euros per day thought it was a bit to much as we were not in the apartment that long, just opened the doors and widows, there was no biting insects so it was ok. One thing i must say is if anyone has a phobia with cats be warned there are quite a lot of cats and kittens hang round the pool area, didnt bother us as we enjoyed watching them! Beach is just a short walk away and very clean. We had a great time and would recomend the ideal apartments.

Accomodation
We thought we had booked a studio, and were delighted to find we had an apartment. The rooms were spacious, very (very, very) clean and airy. A gentle breeze passed through when the windows were open giving a welcome coolness. Plenty of storage for two persons, endless hot water available day and night, good kitchenette with all dishes and crockery, kettle etc., clothes drier on the balcony, fresh towels & bedding every few days. We didn't use the air-conditioning - at 7euros a day we thought it was too much (5 would have been acceptable), and we coped fine.

Complex
The apartments are Greek family-run, which is usually a guarantee of good service. No exception here. Grounds and pool are spotless, gorgeous flowers and plants keep the place cool and look terrific. Plenty of sunbeds around the pool. At the road end of the site is the restaurant - a typical Greek taverna with superb food cooked by Maria. Good English breakfast is 7 euros. Free Wi-Fi on site, internet-connected computer available at small charge.

Location
10 minutes stroll to the safe and sandy beach (sunbeds and parasol 5euros), Within 100m are 2 bakeries and 3 patisseries, ice cream and coffee shops, small (reasonably-priced) supermarket, pharmacy, medical centre, car-rentals, and jewellers. The main road is not very busy - the main traffic uses the new National road by-passing the village. Bus-stop nearby. Don't make the mistake of thinking that the place is going to be rowdy or crowded - it's peaceful and relaxing, no hustle.

Resort
Not a big place, maybe a mile from end-to-end. Loads of really good Greek restaurants, traditional bars, coffee shops, wood-fired pizza ovens. The Chinese restaurant is excellent. They cater largely for the local Greeks, who won't put up with rubbish. Everywhere is open until you're ready to leave - you meet people on the street who make you stay and have a quick(?) drink, and soon it's 2 o'clock. For nightowls/clubbers, Hersonissos and Malia are only a bus or taxi ride away. No trouble in Kokkini Hani, never saw a policeman in a fortnight.

The Ideal Apartments is a superb choice for a peaceful, relaxing holiday. Maria, George and the rest of the family do their very best to help you to enjoy your stay. The pool bar is run by a brilliant Dutch couple, Wim and Rhianna, who became our friends after only a couple of days. They look after all the guests around the pool, supplying food and drinks and playing great music. Ask for their recommendations about where to eat - you'll find them later in the same restaurants.
My wife has walking difficulties, steps and steep slopes can be a problem. At the Ideal she was able to get around with little difficulty. The road through the village is fairly flat, although the pavements are sometimes awkward because they are not always continuous. There is a slight hill going to the beach, through the grounds of the Themis Hotel, but we were able to cope. The beach is sandy, easy to get in and out of the sea, and the beach bar does good snacks and drinks. We spent most days there, then back to the Ideal for a cooling swim before getting ready to go out.
We have visited a dozen different Greek islands, and this is the first occasion that we have said we would like to return to the same apartments. We were very sorry to leave, but at least we have great memories.

We stayed at the Ideal Apartments, where our family hosts, Maria, George, Panos and Pandelis provided clean, spacious and modern facilities. They have a pool bar that is run by a charming Dutch couple, Wilm and Rhianna. Their lunchtime snacks are superb. (Try the Ideal Omelette). Likewise for an evening reposte the Ideal Restaurant fare is good value, (try SouSoukaki) well presented and thoroughly enjoyable. We returned there a number of times to sample their post prandial Ouzo and complementary fruit followed by an end of evening Raki which made the whole experience extremely enjoyable and very reasonable too.
I’d recommend a stay at the Ideal – for those who aspire to being lazy (or thoroughly rested) it could be an “Ideal” all inclusive in its own right.
And so:
Kokkini Hani, is a holiday strip that is suffering from having two “all inclusive” hotels situated to the east of the village. In the evening, a walk along the main road shows tavernas and cafes that are often sparsely populated. There are a few gems, a star is the Kafeneion Pratsenes, a genuine welcome, no menu, just ask what is available. It will be freshly cooked as you wait. We had wine marinated Pork, Greek salad, lashings of Greeek Potatoes, and a delicious honeyed wine. Not sweet but very very drinkable. And afterwards, complementary fruit and Raki. A meal for 4 can be yours for less than 50Euros – excellent value and hospitality. I can’t vouch for the Chinese restaurant towards the western end of the strip but it did have good recommendations. Meals at the two restaurants opposite the Chinese were very well presented and tasty. Near the SPAR Supermarket are a number of snack bars populated by the local youth. And towards the Eastern extremities of the village lies The Manousos, this is a traditional home made Grill and Gyros establishment – good staple food which along with the Kontra Phlokos on the sea front (near the Whisky Bar) provides hospitality directly in proportion to the size of meal ordered.
Finally, near the Ideal appts is a bakery/ patisserie with cakes and Baklava to die for. Visit here I commend you.

Our holiday at The ideal apartments was wonderful :) the family Costas, Maria, Panos George and Pandelise who own these apartments are so lovely they bent over backwards to make our stay a warm and happy one and believe me they did, it was one of the best holidays our family have had. The couple who run the bar for the hotel Rhianne and VIM ( sorry about the spelling of vims name lol i'm sure its not right but i tried ) are from Holland, they've been runing the bar for six years, what a lovely couple, they also played a big part in making our stay amazing , we are already looking to book again for august 2013. The apartments, pool area, bar and grounds are kept clean at all times BEAUTIFUL.....our party consisted of 5 adults with ages ranging from 18 to 50 years

We stayed at the ideal apartments in august and had a very relaxing time. The complex was very clean and the staff did everything they could to make sure you had everything you needed. We ate at the restaurent and the food was amazing. We also went a greek restaurent called katifigo which was also amazing. The pool at the ideal is lovely and the people who run it are very friendly. We would recommend the ideal to anyone looking to relax and enjoy the sun, good food and an extremely warm welcome. Will definately book there again if we go to crete. Thankyou for making our honeymoon perfect xxxx

This is a great wee apartment complex and restaurant, run by a lovely family. It's clean, fantastic value for money and well situated if you want a restful beach/pool holiday or if you want to be more active and see a bit of Crete.

We booked two apartments - one for me and my partner and one for our two sons. To be honest we should only have booked one - the apartments are so spacious and could have accommodated the 4 of us very comfortably, although the storage space would have been a wee bit tight. We went with a package deal through Thomson although we now know it would have been cheaper to get flights and arrange accommodation directly with the Ideal - google them and you can find the contact details. We didn't opt for the Thomson transfer deal and took a taxi from the airport which cost 25 Euros.

The apartments are basic so no toaster, microwave or kettle. Also no tea towels - take your own or buy from the supermarket (3 Euros) of which there are two in close proximity - a big Spar or a locally owned one.

We hired a car from the place next door and would recommend them - Kyssos (sp?) the owner was really helpful - allowing us to book a car on 2 seperate occasions for a couple of days each time. He made suggetions on where to go and how to get there. The cars are well maintained and they have a variety of vehicles to meet most needs. They are also competive - I did my homework before we went so I can vouch for that.

A couple of things make the Ideal stand out. Firstly the restaurant adjoining the apartment. The meals are cooked by Maria, the owner (and the hardest working woman I have ever met!) and her cousin - also called Maria. In the two weeks we were there, we ate at the restaurant every
night bar one. My partner and I mainly tried the daily (Greek) specials and our sons loved the pizzas/pastas/burgers- AKA teenage staple diet! Examples of prices - fish (sole) & chips = 7 Euros, pizza = 7 Euros, daily special 7 - 10 Euros - all really well cooked and excellent value - which is why we never went anywhere else. House wine by the 1L carafe was 8 Euros. The few days we went travelling across Crete we really came to appreciate the quality of cooking and value at the Ideal.

The second thing that we really appreciated was the pool and the pool bar. Wyms and Rhianna (sp?) a Dutch couple who run the pool area really have the place well organised. There were always enough sun beds and you could have drinks/snacks by the pool from 11am til about 8pm. The drinks cost 2 Euros for soft drinks, 3 Euros for lager and 2.5 Euros for a glass of wine. Lunch time snack cost between 3 - 5 Euros. They are a lovely, friendly couple who provide a great service.

All in all a lovely holiday for us - made so by the friendliness and hospitality provided by Maria, Kostas and their family - particularly George who manages the restaurant. Highly recommended.
