“Beautiful location in the Normandy countryside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

This was a truly enjoyable stay in a beautiful renovated two hundred year old dairy farmhouse. The owners couldn't be more welcoming or helpful during our stay. The meals were excellent, and the surrounding countryside stunning. Narrow roads, horses and dairy cows, hedgerows, and the Channel just a couple miles away. The invasion beaches are close, as is Ste Mere Eglise, with Omaha and the city of Bayeux perhaps 40 minutes distance. Horse back riding is available, bicycles...I have no complaints and would readily stay here again.

This converted farmhouse is a real find. An excellent base of operations to visit the WWII Normandy invasion beaches and museums. We stayed in a large room on the third floor which was comfortable and quiet. We also opted for the half board. It was very convenient to have dinner here as well as breakfast since dining options in the area are meager. They also serve lunch which was a pleasant surprise. It is only 3 km from Utah Beach and an hours ride to Omaha Beach. St Mere Eglise is a 15 minute ride.
Everyone was very friendly and spoke english. The restaurant manager translated the menu for us and gave us good advise. The breakfast was delicious. Free parking is also available.

Room Tip: Spend a little more to get a larger room

My husband and I also were on a bike tour of Normandy when we stayed at Le Grand Hard for two nights. Joe, Catherine and Tom all welcomed us like we were family they had not seen in a long while. Everything about this lovely place makes you feel relaxed and welcome. Our room on the third floor was large and very comfortable, and all of our meals at the Inn were enjoyable. Sitting outside with cocktails in the late afternoon sun before dinner was such a luxury after 4 days on our bikes. If you are visiting the Normandy region book a room at this lovely inn. You will not be disappointed. You will be able to see all of the American landing sites, museums, and the cemetery from this one location if you are not on a bike.

We stayed already twice at Le Grand Hard. It is an exceptional place! The owners Catherine and Jo are doing everything to make your stay wonderful. The whole team was really friendly and the accomodations were very good. We stayed for 5 days and it was too short. We went horseback riding on the countryside and on the beach (exceptional!!!), our daughters had an initiation horseback lesson. we did yoga, we went cycling a whole day, we visited some really nice places - there is a lot of history and culture in the neighborhood, we had a guided tour in jeeps of worldwar II and saw all the plaxes where the liberation started, we relaxed on the beach, .... We enjoyed every minute of it!
This really is a place to recommend to everybody and we will return soon!

We stayed here for two nights on our recent biking trip through Normandy. The wonderful Belgian couple who restored this pretty farm were so welcoming .They and their staff went out of the way to make sure we enjoyed our stay, giving us helpful tips on where to visit, getting our laundry done after 5 days on the road and even helping us with our onward journey. They have created a haven of simple, peaceful ,family friendly fun.Nothing fancy, just great straightforward attention to the things that matter:great location, tasteful surroundings.Dinner for example was perfect:a choice of purposely only two things for each course for dinner ,both equally delicious, fresh and satisfying without the usual French menu of ninety three pretentious and disappointing plats so prevalent elsewhere in the region. This hotel shows that family owned and run businesses are so often the best..because they are there and they care! This is a special place.

We stayed here 2 nights as part of our Discover France cycling trip. Wonderful BIG rooms with great beds which you really appreciate after cycling all day. Wonderful food with a great atmosphere and friendly down to earth service, Breakfast was just as good - its great when you can down all those croissants knowing you'll burn them off cycling!!

We would go back anytime.

The owners, Katherine and Joe, are amazing people who make you feel like their home is your home. The rooms are wonderful, spacious and clean, the property is extraordinary with a comforting tranquility that we have never experienced anywhere else. If you want to explore the Normandy region of France, this is the place to stay. It is centrally located and a short drive to all of the historic D-Day beaches and museums. We also had a beautiful, scenic drive to Mont St Michel. There is a lounge area where you can have drinks before dinner, play pool, or Yahtzee and listen to music to relax at the end of your day, before eating a meal. The food was exquisitely prepared by the chef at the restaurant on the property, Michael, who knows how to make a 5-course-meal into a masterpiece without a large price tag. Hilde was also wonderful, and prepared our breakfast meals during our stay. We have done a lot of traveling in the last 25 years, but have never had an unforgettable experience like this. We will definitely be back and encourage our friends to do the same!

Room Tip: We stayed in the main house in a double room with a bathroom. Very reasonable rates!
