We stayed t this hotel for a week in September. At first I wasn't too imressed as it's quite basic, but couple days in, I have changed my mind!! And mainly it was the staff that made it work!! They are brilliant team and they made our holiday!! Barmains, animators, all the staff was exceptional!! Special thanks to Vlado, who made Lithuanian flag of shots!! The room and hotel was spotless clean, good food and drinks not watered down. Well done team!!

We stayed at this hotel from 9th to 16th September and was very impressed with it. It was lovely and clean, with very spacious bedrooms and a sea view. The food was lovely, very plentiful and varied, plus we enjoyed the Bulgarian food evening. The staff were brilliant and couldn't do enough for you. We had lovely weather, and Barney, our rep, took us on his 'ramble' around the small town of Obzor the day after we arrived, which was very enlightening. He also arranged a taxi for us to Bourgas so that we could go bird watching to PODA, a bird sanctuary and wetlands, which was brilliant, where we saw birds we hadn't seen before, plus a flock of black pelicans flying over!

Room Tip: Our room, Number 5156, had part of its sea view obscured by the larger balcony of the next door room...

We stayed at this hotel for two weeks from the 15th to the 30th September. The staff at the hotel were amazing in every way with a special mention to the restaurant staff who entertained my 7month baby boy on a daily basis! They really made an effort to fuss over him and he enjoyed meal times looking out for his special friends! My biggest complaint as a mother was the broken high chairs. There were approximately 10 high chairs in the restaurant and only one worked properly. They were old, wooden, rickety and not what I would expect from a four star hotel. I complained about the broken straps after a couple of days but nothing was fixed or altered. On our last night my son slipped out of the high chair and very nearly landed on the floor. There were also no baby changing facilities not much a problem but when your room is on the 6th floor it's a quite a trek back to the room each time especially when the lifts are in demand. For such a large hotel a four person lift is very inadequate. I was disappointed to see the wifi was only available in reception and had to pay for the privilege. With a 7month baby a lot of time was spent in our room due to naps and early bed times and we found the lack of Internet facilities quite poor. The tv only had one English Channel which was CNN not much a problem if you don't spend a lot of time in the room but towards the end of the holiday we had become quite restless and ready for home. The resort was pretty much shut up for the season when we got there although there were a few souvenir shops still open. Most of the bars and restaurants had shut for the winter. Nessebar is a definite must see and we enjoyed a full day there with my parents who live in a village nearby. We had fantastic weather - very pleasant low 20's which is what we wanted with having our baby with us - very nice to walk on the seafront daily with the pram.
All in all it was nice to get away for 2 weeks from the daily rituals of work and such forth but due to the facilities available to us as parents we were ready for home after 10 days.

This hotel is clean, the rooms are spacious with sea views The food is plentiful and varied but this is not a Riu standard hotel that we are used to. W have visited the Riu in Jamaica and Cuba which were outstanding. We booked this hotel as Thompson class it as platinum and trip advisor 4 and a half star. We fancied a quiet few weeks by the Black Sea with the option of excursions and venturing out if we wanted to, we did achieve this. We noted 112 couples had rated this highly on trip advisor but found most couples were retired couples and all the entertainment seemed to be aimed at children. The evening entertainment at 9.30 was for children, magic shows etc, very young child oriented. This was followed by a disco/karoke which also featured the children. So no i would not say this was for adults/couples. This is a family resort. Also predominately the guests were German with few English. Which obviously brought the age old issue of bed booking to the fore. I awoke one morning at 5.20, the sunrise was fabulous so ventured out on the balcony to take a photo, i kid you not there were sunbeds booked even then!! We did have the greatest luck to meet some fabulous Scottish couples there and had a right hoot with them so big thanks to you lot.
There are a few points that have to be made about the Riu though. The bar closes at midnight and serves local beverages only as part of its all inclusive package or international beverages at the same price as the U.K.
Wi fi-we had to pay approx £14 for the internet which i dont mind paying for but it is only available in the lobby and is often slow when the children are looking at TV and playing games through the internet.
We went the last week in August first in September. The 1st of September things start to close down. So after 9pm there are only a handful of bars open. Nothing after midnight.
We decided as the entertainment was not suitable for us we would retreat after dinner and catch a movie in our rooms , the Thompson overview stated 3 English speaking channels. There was one which was CNN. So no TV either. And we have thrown better TVs out. However as an avid reader i happily entertained myself catching up on some well overdue reading, although i noticed my partner was restless at times. We did report the lack of Tv to the manager who did try to have a tech guy fix but to no avail.
The staff were hard working, polite and helpful especially Simo in the buffet restaurant who never seemed to stop.
If we had children i would imagine this would be the ideal location as there's always drinks food and icecream on hand as well as the entertainment.
The Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna are all extra cost and the pool is freezing so not many people in the pool but the Black Sea is right at the back of the hotel, which was warm and inviting.
Overall we had a lovely time and met some smashing people. We visited Nessabar, Varna and Sunny beach. Sunny Beach is more the twenty something Blackpool of the Bulgarian Black sea with football and tongs galore. Varna is a huge city and Nessbar a lovely quaint town. All of these can be independently travelled to from Obzur for between 6-16 Lev. One tip start out early return before 6pm if you wish to use public transport. Otherwise lots of organised trips and taxis. Our Thompson rep was Barny and he was a helpful pleasant chap. On his day off he organises a ramble of the local town, this is free and worthwhile we really enjoyed the local fineries on offer. There is also a tourist information in the centre of town which is helpful and provides free maps.
The flight time is 3.5 hours-brilliant.
Any of the Bulgarians we came into contact with were cheery and helpful but you can see life has been hard and the country is just about to begin to flourish. I do hope it does not become like Turkey but my feeling is places like Sunny Beach already have. There appears to be a strong on emphasis on education. All the staff we spoke to had degrees and masters and were very positive about their employers. Also they stated that they had no desire to leave Bulgaria of their families.
Finally the weather was beautiful up in the 30s most days and cooler at night.
So overall a fabulous first visit to the Black Sea.

Room Tip: we were on the 6th floor -think it was the furthest room from facilities but it was peaceful. All ro...

we started our holiday with a 3 hr delay with which all we were offered was Luke warm water, not to put any blame on Thomson so arrival at hotel was in the very early hrs no problem really as mistakes were made by their air-side support team.
the hotel staff were exceptional this maybe due to the fact the hotel was half full due to closing of season we arrived on the 13 sep for ten nights.
the rooms were very spacious had plenty of wardrobes and draws to hang clothes in the room and terrace where sea facing and had lovely views, The rooms where cleaned every day to an exceptional standard by ANI the maid.

restaurant were very clean and food was buffet style and the best food ive had of its type from any all inclusive buffet style restaurant .

being a TUi hotel it has the pleasure of different nationalities which to me is not a problem
exception are the towels on sun bed at dawn

our only disappointment was with the boat trip the crew only spoke in german even our tour guide (english speaking) was unable to have the mike to translate other wise she was also exceptional.
so we had our say to our hotel tour rep (Berny) with whom we booked the trip with, and his excuse was, it is after-all a TUi hotel but as we explained if it multi cultural then the boat should be able to speak in all languages and as English is now recognized as most countries second language we were told that they had now taken that trip off the agenda far to late for all the other British holiday makers before us. well at least we got back 20% better than nothing
so if we go with TUi again we will make sure all tours ect will be speaking a language i can understand (English)

its a shame really we should have gone earlier in the season when the water temp was a bit higher but never a fault of the hotel i couldn't find a fault even the entertainment was relatively good

All the staff from the hotel to the entertainment where very friendly and helpful and always had a smile to give you

Room Tip: try to get one facing the pool

Arrived in the afternoon, and we were greeted with a nice cold drink and a nice friendly receptionist. When we were shown to our room, it was facing the football pitch, we had requested a sea view room when we booked our holiday online, there was no problem when we asked for an other room with a sea view, the manager was very prompt and helpful. Our room looked over the pool bar, room 3122..it was very clean, and maintained that way throughout our stay. We loved it, all the staff were very friendly, bar staff went the extra mile to make sure you had fun, don't know how they did it but seemed to remember what everyone drank. Had a wide range of food, no complaints there either. Pool was very cold, took my breath away, only went in the once, sea was warmer, we loved swimming in the sea Lovely beach lots of sun loungers too. Five minute walk to the town, the locals were very friendly too. Enjoyed some afternoons sitting outside Café Zoro, the old lady who looked after us was very friendly, food was really nice there. The town did start to close on our second week we went from the 2nd September to the 16th weather was good it was a bit windy though at times. Went a trip out to Khans Tent, great show a must see, food great.Would recommend Hotel Riu Helios Bay in Obzor. Would go again.

Room Tip: Third or fourth floor good sea views and pool view can see all the goings on...

Lovely hotel right on beach with sea view rooms. Excellent views and rooms cleaned every day...pool v cold but sea is warmer.Food was nice but sometimes hit and miss. Special tks to the cleaner of room 3107 and girl at reception who always cheered up our son with sweets. Kids club was terrible nothing for english speaking kids. Indoor pool was cold and you had to pay to use hot tub or sauna. Nice village nearby small shops and a lovely town square. Hotel suitable for older couples. Overall we enjoyed our stay but very let down by lack of kids club for english speakers.
