“GREAT EXPERIENCE/HOTEL & PEOPLE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 4, 2013

What can I say! Alba was extremely accommodating, loved her and the staff. Due to the weather change in CR I came down with a cold and Alba and he staff made me a homemade remedy that did wonders for me! The rooms are charming and spacious. And the breakfast yummy!! I definitely recommend this hotel if you are staying in Monteverde.

I didn't stay at Historias because Alba didn't have a room available for the 4 nights we needed. But, she was so warm and quick to respond to emails that I decided to stay connected. She arranged our transportation to and from Monteverde through Roy Varelas (her husband who runs a taxi/transport service) who we felt very comfortable travelling with both locally and to and from the airport. This is very much a family business and the Brenas are wonderful people. I also met Alba's brother, Luis, for whom Historias is a private labor of love. When I visited Alba, we met in the main area where guests eat their morning breakfast while hummingbirds feed right outside the big windows. Alba also arranged a guided tour in Curi Cancha with Danilo who I later learned is also her brother as well as a popular guide in the Monteverde area. (I had asked for Danilo based on a review so no deception here.) All in all, I recommend Alba's services and believe we would have been happy at Historias had she had room.

Room Tip: Had we stayed here I would have requested a 2nd floor room on a corner.

The pictures do not disappoint, and while it is a little futher away from the shops and restaurants, the walk is quite picturesque and shorter than expected. Loved the service, Alba is super friendly and always readily available with good recommendations!

We stayed at Historias Lodge as part of a package group that was arranged by a travel company in Tamarindo. We had no idea where we would be staying and were at the mercy of the booking agent. As we entered the town of Santa Elena with a bus load of people that were all bound for different hotels, we sat back and waited for our destination. Some of the hotels/hostels were a bit sketchy and we wondered what kind of place awaited us. We were nearly the last ones dropped off, but we were THRILLED when the bus pulled up to Historias Lodge. It was so much better than some we had just seen! It is a quaint and quiet property that has been well taken care of. Alba & Luis were wonderful hosts and were very helpful with information. You can tell they take great pride in the property!!! We stayed in a second floor room facing the courtyard. It was clean, had 3 beds, a wonderful bathroom, and a safe. We did the Don Juan coffee tour in the afternoon and explored the area around the hotel for the rest of the day (there is a local grocery and a bakery a block or so away). That evening we opted to walk downtown to eat at the Tree House Restaurante and to explore the town. It is a decent walk, but it is all downhill. We took a taxi back, which I would recommend to anyone that isn't looking for an extreme workout going back up the hill. The following morning we had a spectacular made to order breakfast in the hotel dining area while we watched the hummingbirds out the window. Sadly, we only had one night in Santa Elana and I think one would want a minimum of two. I don't know if I'll ever get back to Santa Elena, but if I do I will certainly stay at Historias!!!

Room Tip: I liked the upstairs rooms because there were stools and tables in front of each room where you coul...

We enjoyed staying: great location for trips in monteverde rain forest, lovely hosts, very helpful and friendly, clean, quiet. We enjoyed sitting at the small house bar in the late afternoon.
Also the breakfast was really tasty. Overall a great place to stay and I would really recommend.
