“Great location with awesome service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

We were only able to stay here for one night, but that night could not have ben better. The room was very spacious and clean. The wifi was slow, but reached the room without a problem. The grounds are beautiful with 4 different trails through the rainforest. We were able to see many different birds on these hikes, including finches and hummingbirds. The restaurant had great food and service. The restaurant overlooked the cloud forest, which was absolutely beautiful. The staff set up a canopy tour for us, right on the hotel grounds, which was a big highlight of our stay. They also set up a private taxi to take us back to the airport after our stay. Would definitely stay here again.

Friendly staff (they brought us a tamale as a Christmas token 12/27), great views, comfortable rooms. The breakfast (esp bread, granola, jelly: all home-made) are super-tasty. We should have stayed here longer!

The Cloud Forest Lodge is located in a very tranquil area with the cool mountain breezes gusting every night and unforgettable sunsets over the Gulf of Nicoya. Also there is a zip line located on site at the hotel which would be a great adventure for some. Me and my girlfriend are big time wildlife enthusiasts so this location was great. We easily seen over 40 species of birds just at from looking out the lobby window and walking the surrounding trails. A few of these birds included the : Squirrel cuckoo, Gray-Throated Wood Rail, the Great Kiskadee, Gray headed Chachalaca, and the beautiful Motmot who can be seen nearby the hotel often. The rooms are cozy and relaxing as well and very roomy. The town of Santa Elana is within walking distance and the public transportion is very accessible. The staff at the hotel are friendly and helpful. I would recommend The Cloud Forest Lodge to anyone. .

Room Tip: Try to get room number 10 there is a small creek running near it which is very relaxing to fall asle...

Monteverde is beautiful, and as a cloud forest, also very wet and humid. Unfortunately this also counted for our room. It took a lot of being inside (and burning a candle which was provided) to feel warm and dry; there was no heater. Another con was that there wasn't a safety box; personal possessions were able to be turned in at the reception to be stored. Pro's were that the lodge felt rather seccluded and un-touristic, the roomy bathroom and the fact that the Original Canopy Tour starts downstairs from the restaurant!

If you travel to an area called the "Cloud Forest," you can't be too disappointed when it's wet and rainy when you get there. Indeed, it's the wet that makes the area so special. But unless you want to rough-it the whole time, you may be interested in getting someplace warm, dry, with good food and a stocked bar at the end of the day. Welcome to the Monteverde Lodge. The staff is truly excellent (they speak great English, but they'll indulge your stumbling Spanish if you're so inclined (I was)); they make sure your glass and belly are full; and they're quick to offer suggestions for recommended local activities. In addition, the lodge is located close to town, so it's no problem to walk to local restaurants and shopping. Be aware that Monteverde is at the end of a rough, rocky road. That is the price for accessing some of the most pristine nature you'll ever encounter. Be bold and make your way; Monteverde - and this lodge - are worth the trip. If you're prissy and require the Four Seasons, just skip it and head to Arenal.

We arrived after midnight, due to late arrival of our plane and the long ride up from San Jose (appx. 4 hours). The roads are mostly 2 lanes and about one third of the trip was unpaved (dirt and rocks). Upon our arrival, the buildings were dark and someone came running out of the lobby, with our key, grabbed our luggage, escorted us to our room and left. We were able to check in late the next morning. The onsite restaurant kindly opened up just for us so we could have a late breakfast. They have a very good mango juice drink that we highly recommend. Although the restaurant has a good selection of menu items, you do have the option of either a long walk or a short taxi ride into the local town, Santa Elena.

We found the front desk people very helpful with arranging tours, transportation and had lots of information regarding the local town and sights we could see.

The room was large, as was the bathroom. It was clean. The bed was a bit hard and there is no TV or phone but there is internet. This was just fine for us because we were not interested in a fancy resort type hotel. If you visit their website, you will see pictures of the rooms and the property. These accurately portray the rooms.

We stayed a week at this lodge. While there we saw lots of birds (including hummingbirds), butterflies, owls, an armadillo, a pair of agoutis, and various crawly things. We also saw beautiful sunsets. The property has several maintained trails into the jungle. Be sure to take water with you if you hike these.

Our visit was during the rainy season in October. This is the cloud forest so it tends to be cooler than the rain forests at the lower elevations. Be sure to take along a sweater for the evenings and a rain jacket for when it rains. While there, we found that the mornings were very nice and that it usually rained only a few hours during the afternoons.

We took the recommended night tour on the property and found it informative and fun.

We came on the a reco from a friend, but i think the weather soured our experience a little. It was cold, rainy, and windy the 2 nights we were there. I thought there would be wireless in the room but there wasn't any. The room was very bare and there was no phone or tv, which is ok, except that when the desk needs to get a hold of you they send someone knocking on your door (which happened to us late one night). The staff was courteous, but not every person we spoke to at the desk was as knowledgeable as the next. We thought they had made tour reservations for us in the cloud forest preserve but when we got there they said there was no reservation. The breakfasts were good, but the rest of the meals we though were pretty expensive there. A lot of other reviews talk about the nice trails but we didn't get to enjoy them because of the weather. It's a little removed from the town so we had to take cabs, which wasn't terrible but it just felt very isolated. It was clean and might be good for families since our room had a king bed and a bunk bed in it.
