“Awesome experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2012

I have stayed in hostels all over Latin America and Europe and feel that Casa Tranquilo was by far my favourite so far. I have never encountered such friendly and helpful staff. The bedrooms and bathrooms are very clean and well kept and the guys working there are more than eager to provide all the information you need to have an amazing time in the Monteverde area. I loved that the place was quiet at night but full of life during the day. I will definitely be going back to this hostel to chill the next time I visit Costa Rica.

I stayed at Casa Tranquilo for 1 week with my girlfriend and her grandmother. We stayed in the double room with private bathroom. The room was clean and free of any cockroaches. The shower worked good, and the toilet was clean. The breakfast every morning was great. I didn't realize that we would be cooking our own breakfast, but that was not an issue. The BANANA BREAD is AWESOME! Always coffee to drink, and lots of fresh fruit.

The internet service and computers were reliable.

The best part about staying at Casa Tranquilo was the hosts, David and Elvis. Not only were they kind and friendly, but they happily would give free detailed information about what to do in the area, and they would even draw maps.

Elvis brought us on a few hikes for free, and showed up some awesome views in the Monteverde area. Hiking with Elvis and his dogs was a highlight of the whole trip in Monteverde. Elvis also showed up some great local, cheap restaurants to eat at with typical food. They were awesome.

David's dad is a naturalist, and he is the recommended tour guide in the area. He even wrote a children's coloring book with all kinds of fun facts about the insects in the area.

Like the title says, Casa Tranquilo was tranquilo. Quiet, enjoyable, and the sun rises on the porch in the morning which makes it delightful to sit out and enjoy.

Overall the experience at Casa Tranquilo was unforgettable, and I would highly recommend any friend to go to this hostel, as it is probably the best value in Santa Elena.

Room Tip: The double room with private bathroom was the best room there, and we loved it.

Upon arrival we were met by very friendly staff who helped us get situated and set up a night hike for us. The hostel had great vibes from the beginning and only got better. The staff will take you on a guided hike and they prepare fresh banana bread in the morning for breakfast. I had trouble with my debit card and Elvis and David went out of there way to help me get it straightend out. They provide beer for a low cost which was much needed after the drive there. I would HIGHLY suggest having them make you a traditional Casada dinner. It was great watching the staff cook and put everything together. An experience in itself. On top of that, the dinner was AMAZING!!! Way better than the restaurants and if you are lucky, other travelers from around the world will be dining with you. (you have to let them know ahead of time that you would like lunch or dinner prepared.) We had a communal dinner with travelers from Turkey, Germany, Belgium, England and Italy. This made the dinner even better. Hammocks were relaxing and the Bob Marley music was fun. My stepmom, who is in her 50's, had as good a time as we did hanging out with everyone. Truly a place for all ages. I will note that the beds are a bit hard but it is a hostel. Also, for those of you who don't want a windy place at night, good luck. You are in Monteverde after all. I had no problem sleeping. Only thing that was somewhat of a letdown was that you had to prepare your own breakfast. BUT, they had all of the fixings for you already there. (eggs, fruit, coffee, etc.) I think we got spoiled at our first hostel so I don't really consider this a negative. Overall our experience here was great and I would definitely go back. Pura Vida

Room Tip: Private suite with bath, double bed, and bunk bed, was at end of the hall and had sunlights.

These guys know how to run a hostel. Easily competes for one of my favorite hostels of all time.

A day in the life of Casa Tranquilo-

Wake up to some bomb [--] cooking aka all the free eggs, bread, pastries, fruta fresca, and even homemade banana bread

Enjoy the company of the staff, they will be dancing by the time the sun comes up

Walk to town and explore, ask Elvis to go on a walk with his dogs, or have them set you up with a tour company

Come back and have that afternoon siesta and maybe a beer- hang in the commons area... you won't be alone

They go out to bars, show you the best cheap places for dinner, and will make you feel like a local. Get to know they staff, they make the effort to know you and that is rare. PLUS their music is right on with the mood.

Highly recommend!

alejandro
