“Warm Banana Bread”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2011

Spent two nights with laid back lads at Casa Tranquilo Hostel. Walk to downtown was two minutes. Rooms are nice a clean and priced right. Cook your own lunch or dinner and have a beer with the folks. Internet is great and shower is hot. Very helpful for all your needs. I plan on staying there whenever I return to beautiful Monte Verde. It's a party.
Warm bread in the morning fills the day room with delight.

Room Tip: Upstairs in the back for me

Great laid back atmosphere with extremely attentive staff and nice, clean, easily affordable rooms. The ridiculously handsome owner makes homemade banana bread every morning-- this magically delicious bread is worth at least one night's stay in itself. Enjoy the view from the terrace overlooking town and the ominous cloud forest, or just hang in the communal kitchen and sip fresh brewed coffee. Located right on the corner of town, access to everything is beyond easy. The staff includes a tour guide who is beyond knowledgeable on the entire area and offers tours to suit your needs (ask for Johnny). Elvis, another helpful staff member will go above and beyond to make you feel welcome! My only regret is that I didn't stay longer!!!!
highly recommended

Room Tip: They will work with you, especially during low season

With a private room (shared bath) at $10/night, this price is really hard to beat in Monteverde! Room and bathrooms were clean, and Thais the manager was very helpful with reservations for activities and other transport info. I actually like that breakfast items were put out the night before- eggs and fruit don't spoil as easily in the cooler temps, and many nature activities start before 7am in Monteverde, it is nice to be able to grab something to eat before heading out. A very good budget option, just don't expect luxury, and bring a towel!

We read through the review through Lonely Planet and the place sounded great. Upon arriving, our room seemed particularly dingy and not well kept up. There were dead flies on one bed in the room, and on the floor. At night, we watched a few ants on the ceiling only to realize that there was a steady stream of many ants. The food put out for breakfast wasn't refreshed refreshed from the night before so it was impossible to tell how many mornings the same fruit/hard boiled eggs were recycled. Looking at the pictures on the hostel's website, it seems a lot has changed, and if new management has taken over then some of the false advertising should be removed-- there are no hammocks, and no particularly comfortable lounge area. Don't recommend at all.

This hostel really lives up to its name. Though it's within easy walking distance of town, it's far enough away that it's quiet and peaceful enough for travellers who want to get a good night's rest. The staff is incredibly kind and helpful- we felt extremely welcome and well cared for during our two night stay, they arranged all of our local tours and activities (some with a discount for booking through the hostel!) and our wood-panelled room was cozy and comfortable. This was an incredible value, and I would highly recommend this hostel to any Monteverde visitor.

Room: We got a private room (double bed) with a shared bathroom for $16/night (total, not per person) which is pretty damn cheap. Secure-seeming door and lock. The bed was sturdy and pretty comfortable. Our room had a skylight. The only downside was that it was really windy and a tree or some loose part of the roof made a ton of noise during the night. Some of the other guests mentioned mosquito issues overnight but I didn't have a problem.

Bathrooms: The shared bathrooms were decent - hot water showers were nice.

Kitchen: Very nice view from the shared kitchen area and the kitchen was decently equipped.

The Lonely Planet guidebook mentions that this place puts on a nice breakfast spread but apparently management has changed recently and the new breakfast setup is that they have some food left in the kitchen and you're welcome to prepare it yourself. This wasn't a big deal for me; there were eggs, coffee, bread for toast, and pineapple (one day); but all the other guests seemed to be expecting a little more.

Staff: Brian was the only person working in the three days we were there, he may be the only staff member. Even so he was pretty available and was very helpful in booking tours and giving directions, etc.

Location: Pretty convenient, not right in town but only a 5 minute walk from the main triangle and tours will pick you up. Right on the street so there's some road noise.

Pros: cheap, hot shower, kitchen
Cons: wind/road noise, I think Brian drank some beers I left in the fridge.

After staying at Casa Tranquilo for 2 days, I was in La Fortuna when I realized I forgot my ipod at the hotel. It was 1pm and I was flying home the next day so I assumed it gone. However, the manager at Tranquilo contacted a tour group to La Fortuna had it delivered to the my new hostal by that evening!

Even before that, I was very happy with my stay here. Great atmosphere, clean rooms, nice wooden building, good location and very knowledgeable staff that help you get discounts when possible.

This place is highly recommended.
