We stayed at Arco Iris for two nights in the budget room, which was 37 dollars per night including the discount for paying in cash. When we arrived, the hotel looked really nice with a beautiful garden where you can relax. For the price we paid at this kind of hotel, we didn't expect to get the best room they had, but we did expect a certain amount of quality.
The staff was really friendly and helpful, which was nice. Also the room looked simple and clean and the shower was good. There was a note saying that pygones might come under your door but that they were harmless and there was a towel to put there so they woudn't come in that much. The note also said that the hotel sprayed the area with bugspray to prevent this from happening. We didn't think too much about it, until our second night. We woke up during the night to find at least 200 of these bugs in the room. It wasn't even possible to get out of bed without crushing them under your feet. Maybe it was worse in our cabin because we were at the bottom of a hill (cabin #9) and they came with the rain, but it was a horrible way of waking up.
Also, the dogs looked like they were covered with fleas, because they were scratching and biting themselves really bad. They stayed out of our way but I don't know if they can maybe come into the reception area at night and get on the couches there, because my boyfriend later found some bites that looked like flea bites. Again, I'm not sure if the bites were from fleas spread by the dogs but we didn't really feel comfortable with them walking around near us anymore.
The next morning we left really early to catch the bus, and when I wanted to take a shower it was really cold. I don't mind a cold shower, but this water felt like it came straight from the north pole. If you pay 37 dollars for a room in Costa Rica, you at least expect a warm shower right?
Because of us leaving so early, we were unfortunately unable to inform staff about all these occurances. I hope that if they read this, they will try to do more about the bug problem (for example spray more? I didn't see them do it once actually). Also I hope that they will help the dogs with their fleas (if they are not doing that already), since it is pretty sad for them and not very comfortable for guests.
I would't necessarily not recommend this hotel, since the outdoor area was really nice, but I wouldn't recommend staying in room #9. If you pay for a nicer room, you'll probably have a good experience, but I think that if you pay that amount of money there are also great hotels around where you also get breakfast included.
