“Decent Hotel on a Very Bumpy Road”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

The staff was very cheerful and friendly. The room was a bit small, but adequate. There was a small balcony on the back side, but it overlooked the overflow parking lot. But we weren't there to spend a lot of time in a room. The buffet breakfast was depleted most of the time, despite not being crowded. They need to do a better job of keeping the food stocked. Overall, not a bad hotel, but some improvements are needed.

Hello Mrs/ Mr Jazz,
Thank you for your comments. W e are very glad you enjoyed your time at Monteverde Country Lodge. We are paying very close attention to the breakfast fare, the truth is, its very hard to make sure we have fresh, recently cocked food at the buffet for all our guests. Monteverde Country Lodge has 60 rooms and we can have 100 plus guests having breakfast any given morning. What we try, is to bring out fresh food throughout the length of breakfast time. And as we do so, sometimes we run out of portions. We are paying much more attention to that nowadays, than you for let in us know about it. Its always hard tp be on top of everything and sometimes is good to be reminded of small details that make great differences.

Thank you again and happy travels. The management.

Loved that this is a green hotel. Given that fact, it was a very easy to hear our neighbors above us. They got in very late both nights we were there. Breakfast was included and was great. A little difficult to find, took us a while since it wasn't on our GPS. The sister hotel Poco is beautiful. We went over for a swim and it was great, would have loved to have time to spend more time there.

Room Tip: request a second floor room if you don't mind stairs. Bottom rooms can easily hear the footsteps...

I am currently flying back from spending 12 great days in Costa Rica, but there was this one night that we stayed at the Monteverde Country Lodge. We were set to stay three days here but trust me, what you see is not what you get. They had our room at the furthest location somewhere on the second floor and way in the back. The lady at the desk was friendly and helpful, but as evening came, so came the problems.
1. No hot water
2. I could hear ever move in every room next to ours
3. When we folded the bed sheets back, my wife found human hair and small moving bugs. We called the front desk and we were told no one could help us. We ask for new blankets and sheets and some teenager brought a new box spring cover, that's it. We had our small blanket that we use in the plane so we got close and slept some too.
4. Mosquitos, moths, flys, and anything else with wings were in our room having a fly party. We could not sleep and my wife put on a pair of pants, long shirt, long socks and beenie to feel safe. I left the computor monitor (TV) on so the bugs could be attached to the light in order to kill them. I finally got tired and shut the TV off and left my IPad on so they could be entertained with that light.
5. We contacted the travel agent who demanded this place move us. They did and the last two days were great, since we did not have to stay at this bug house! I would of been better off bringing my tent!! Don't waste your money, time and sleep at this place.

Room Tip: Pass this place if you can!

My family and I rented 2 rooms for 2 nights in August. The location was fine. There was a nice bakery just around the corner and the hotel was only a short ways back on a gravel road. It was an easy walk down hill into town, but the walk up would have been a killer even for those who are in relatively okay shape. You can take a taxi for $2, which in my opinion, was well worth it.

The property itself was nice enough. Our room had a shared balcony in the front with a table and chairs. There is a cute wooden play set in the back for any kids. The rooms were basic. The tv was a nice flatscreen and it did get a surprising number of channels. Beware that you can't flush any paper down the toilets. My room was fine, but the other room we had smelled like sewage from the bathroom on and off throughout the 2 days, and they swear they didn't flush any paper down. Also beware, there is no AC or fans in the room. If you leave the windows open, there will be bugs. I was surpised to see almost 10 spiders crawling around the ceiling and walls when I went to take a shower one night. Also, it is important to note that everyone else's comments on here are true about the walls being paper thin. I could hear people from two rooms down. If you are a light sleeper, be sure to bring ear plugs. My room was on the end of one of the buildings so it was a little quieter. Aparently, they have a sister hotel with a pool, but we did not have the time or desire to check that out.

The staff that we encountered were all very nice. They were helpful in giving their opinions and recommendations on what to do in the area. They helped book tours so that each company came right to the hotel to pick us up. It did take a little bit of time to get through check in, especially if there is already a line of people waiting. The hotel staff was super nice in that we had to leave by 5 a.m. on the day of checkout in order to fly home. Since we were going to miss the free breakfast, they packed each of us a to-go lunch bag with juice boxes, sandwhiches, bananas, and a package of cookies. That was unexpected!

Room Tip: Choose a room that is upstairs and on the end to reduce some of the noise.

I liked this hotel.... but was hard to find, as it's down a dirt road, and not that close to town. It was a nice place though to stay, clean and comfortable, and nice grounds. The restaurant across the street was very good. I would suggest though that they put hair dryers and a microwave, and a small refrigerator in the rooms. They did set up a night hiking tour for us, and also the ziplining through Aventura Canopy Tours. Both offered transportation and I highly recommend both activities. When you check in- they give you some weird fruity drink.... but it was a nice gesture. The receptionist was nice enough, not overly friendly. No elevators, you need to lug your suitcases up the stairs, if you are on the 2nd floor. The breakfast was just okay, not bad , not exceptionally good, but it was included in the price, so what can you expect? Would I stay here again, yes, most likely, as the price was good. There is no pool, but you can go to their sister hotel, which one of the couples did, and said it was just okay. Most of us went on the night hike and the one couple went to the pool, but wished they had gone with us instead.

The hotel is somewhat cramp on its site, two storey block on either side of a courtyard.
The walls and ceiling are paper thin, so you hear everything above and beside you ...The downstairs rooms are very humid so ask for an upstairs room.

The breakfast is spartan. I am sure there are better hotel in Monteverde...

I stayed here with a tour group and I found that the rooms were nice and the food was good. The campus was very nice and had lots of room to walk around and the location was good. The hotel was right around the corner from a bakery and grocery store. Also it was not far from town so you could get a taxi if you want to leave and explore.
