“Room in the trees”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

We all loved this place because you felt like you were in a tree house even though you weren't. The suspension bridge amazed my husband and I got to feed the monkeys in the morning as they can through looking for treats (I know not natural but still soooo cute). The rooms were rather thin walls so you could hear people walking by but its far from the road so it wasn't horrible. The rooms were a bit small but clean, for the price its certainly great. We also met a guide there, Sergio, who was amazing. We hired him for 3 separate guided hikes. He has a lot of knowledge to share, especially for birders, and is clearly passionate about conservation. If you see him around its worth paying for the guided hike.

Room Tip: Try to get a room further away from the suspension bridge so there is less people walking by

WOW! WOW! WOW! that is all i can really say about this hostel.. First of all it is located in the cloud forest, which is so awesome, you need to take a hanging bridge to get to your room which i thought was really neat and helped with the great experience. In the morning the staff cuts up banana's and you go feed the monkey's outside.. UMMM that too me was so cool, i had never done that and it was such a treat and awesome experience. I was lucky enough to stay in this hostel for 4 nights and it was VERY clean and all the staff was beyond awesome, From the lady who makes some yummy food in the kitchen to Bryhanner (The owner, i think) and all his staff. absolutely awesome people. Sergio- he is the guide there and is beyond knowledgable about everything in the wilderness i definitely suggest taking his night tour.. it was rad! Every time i think of Costa Rica and how beautiful it is my mind goes straight to this amazing hostel. It is also a sister lodge to Arenal Hostel in La Fortuna which i also stayed at. (also amazing) I can't wait for my next trip to Costa Rica so i can stay here again!

Be weary if booking this hostel during peak season!!!! They keep rooms open on all the hostel websites but when you arrive they say that was a mistake by the websites and they have no rooms. And you are stuck after driving hours to get to Monteverde and now no room with everything booked in town.

Then the owner will show up and say he has room in another place just 200 meters outside of town and he will charge you less. You get to this "place" which is much further than 200 meters and sits within the living area of the local. He shows you a room claiming you are lucky to get a room as it's the last one. The room smells of raid or some type of fumigation and upon further investigation (looking at mattress you see little tiny black pieces of "dirt" nope those are dead bedbugs!!!

Fortunately we had an SUV and left going into town and canvassing all the hostels until we found one single bed in a dorm and my daughter and I shared that. We returned the key and said thanks but no thanks. They are all apologetic and of course continue to claim this is hostel worlds fault - yeah right. They still have rooms open today through new years even though they say they are booked.

A few other points owner said that another group of 5 were on their way in and had booked through this website error - fortunately he had room for them. This is after he told me we got the last room.

This is a scam! I am surprised given what a nice hostel they appear to have.

We ended up at Hostel Sloth and highly recommend that to everyone. At least they are honest, it is clean and the breakfast was great!

I stayed here for 2 nights and it was great and clean! The staff is very friendly, help with activities. I am travelling on my own and I felt very safe and got friends with other travelers easily. In the main hall there is WIFI, a Restaurant and a bar. Meals and breakfast are very good (had barbeque one night). Thanks to Sergio, who guided us for night tours in the jungle with flashlights etc... Sergio is very keen about the nature, plants and animals and he explains a lot. Our tour was so exciting so we were 4 (!!) hours in the jungle. Thanks also to Evan, the host, who was very friendly and took us out to the bar in town. He is a very good Salsa-dancer :-)
I really recommend this hostel, which is located in a nice jungle garden - but only 200 metres from the bus terminal.

Room Tip: choose the rooms over the hanging brige, they are close to the restaurant and at same time directly...

I really enjoyed my stay here and would highly recommend it. Accommodation was cheap enough but more importantly, it was very clean and comfortable. The building is quite new and rooms are well laid out. The food was very good although only negative point I can think of is the breakfast portions were quite small. All the staff were very friendly, professional and helpful. One of the main guys in particular showed us around and was super nice and welcoming. I booked a zip lining tour, which was really good and very cheap. I also did a bungee and tarzan jump and a night walk tour provided by a biologist. It was meant to last 2 hours but went on for well over 3 hours. He is extremely passionate about his work and I think it went on until we saw as many animals/ things etc as we could. I would highly recommend it. Overall, probably best value for money accommodation during my 2 week stay in Cost Rica. The night life in the area is quiet although you are going there to do as many activities as possible so it's not really that important.

This place is awesome. It's like wood lodge elevated up in the trees. Would stay here again, Evan was super helpful and the food was great here. In the morning, couple of monkeys came close by and I was able to feed them and watch as they swung from tree to tree. Jeep-boat-jeep is the way to get here from la fortuna. Great job guys and the rooms are super clean.

Everything is so smart in this place. Clean rooms, soap and towels for hands, the location in the forest is amazing and close to the town at the same time. The food in the restaurant is also very good and the coffee and canopy tours I took were very good as well. The stuff is friendly and you can hike by yourself in the woods behind the hostel. And the monkey bridge!
