“A beautiful place to stay - central but in the forest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

We have just stayed 3 gorgeous nights here.
The staff are friendly and helpful.
The lodge is set on the edge of the forest so waking up and sitting outside and seeing the birds etc was fabulous.
I could recommend this place without a doubt.

Room Tip: All good! we loved the back balcony.

A very clean and well kept establishment that is close to the bus station. Evan was an accommodating host who was willing to go out of his way to ensure that guests had a quality experience. He was helpful and knowledgeable about various activities. Definitely recommend!

Very clean, the staff is super nice and helpfull. Very good price and the breakfast is awesome. Recommend the hostel to everyone who goes to Monteverde for some days. Had a lot of fun ;) There is as well free WIFI and the connection is very good.

Staff was helpful and friendly. Easy walk to store and restaurants. Great location for short trips to local Cheese Factory, Bat museum , night hike locations and Rain Forest Canope Tours. Breakfasts were good! The only missing item was a swimming pool. I think a bit overpriced compared to other places we stayed in.

The hotel is so so. Very humid inside and run down. To go get breakfast you have to walk up the mountain to the twin hotel (Ficus), and the breakfast it's not that great. Not a buffet, you have to order just one dish. Front desk people are very very kind though.
If I will go back to Monteverde, I will definitely NOT go back to this hotel.

Loved the location of the cabin right in the forest but the room left much to be desired. It was very warm and not so much as a fan. We opened the windows (no screens) which helped, but as soon as it started to get dark the winged critters started to come in which necessitated closing them. We were stuck in the room during a 5 hour torrential downpour. The lighting was so poor it required use of a flashlight (which we had brought) to read and there were no chairs to sit on - just the beds. The bathroom needed updating and just didn't feel very clean due to the wear.

The desk staff was not very helpful. The room was a good walk uphill along a winding path and there was no offer to help with the luggage. It also seemed that they recommended a bird watching tour based upon a relationship with the tour provider and not the best tour available.

In addition, the restaurant was closed so breakfast was available at the sister hotel next door. It was the chintziest breakfast of all the hotels we stayed at.

This was the worst of the four hotels we stayed at during our trip.

Dear Guest:

I am very sorry that your expectations were not met to the best extent at our hotel. We are very sorry for the issue of the lack of a fan in your room but given the location of our hotel and the altitude in Monteverde it is very rare to have warm nights that require a fan. In fact no hotel in Monteverde even has as much as air-conditioning as it is considered one of Costa Rica's coldest destinations. Still we do understand and are living the effects of global warming in our community and are increasingly observing that in fact we may need to include fans in our rooms for warmer nights.

As for the appearance of insects during the night, it is just a byproduct of being in the cloud forest but is part of the location. Typically we do not have any complains on this regard as most of the time people keep their windows shut during the night as most nights have a temperature of 18 C or lower, thus most of our guests do not open the windows in the night and do not have this problem. Due to your feedback we will install screens on our windows to prevent this from happening to others.

As for the lack of lighting in the room, we use low voltage light bulbs in our effort to preserve energy yet we are currently switching from low voltage incandescent bulbs to fluorescent light bulbs which will hopefully give better lighting while keeping voltage consumption at bay. We are very sorry that this was an issue for you. We also want to let you know that we are aware of the deterioration of the bathrooms and are in the process of upgrading our bathrooms, we are just sorry that this upgrade was not ready for when you visited us.

Also I would like to mention that though we would gladly have chairs to read and sit inside the standard rooms where you stayed, it is impossible for us to do so due to the size of the room. For this reason we provide chairs in the balcony outside the room and also we have couches in our lobby and reception which also have wireless internet available for clients at no charge. I think that our staff failed to communicate with you regarding these options and I am very sorry for this.

On this note we have also spoken to our staff regarding the issue of them not helping you with your luggage as this is part of our service standard and proper disciplinary measures have been taken including issues such as the recommendation of tours as well as the coordination of transportation to our sister hotel Ficus where you had your breakfast. We provide free transportation for this part and our staff failed to accommodate. For this as well we extend our most sincere apologies.

We want to take this opportunity to try to compensate to some extent this bad experience and will communicate with your travel agency to process a refund for your reservation.

Once again we are very sorry for the inconvenience but will use your feedback to improve our service.

Nice place and staff Evan and collegue were absolutely great helåing out with booking of activities, and booking of transport and lodging on next destination Manuel Antonio - very recommemdable! And the posision on middle of St. Elena gives lot of opportunities to fin restaurants, bars and shopping facilities.
