“There has to be better!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

We stayed in Monteverde for 2 nights as part of our Gate 1 Tour of Costa Rica. Finca Valverde was such a disappointment!! We had a room in a 2 room cabin. I'd like to say the cabin was rustic and quaint, but it was in fact one step above camping. There were a few bugs (which I understand as you're in the forest) but that wasn't even my issue. It just didn't feel clean. It needed a MAJOR remodeling. Also, the walls were PAPER thin!! You could literally hear the people next to you just walking around and talking! I mean, I could hear their floor squeak and literally make out every word of what they were saying in conversation.

In addition to my issues with the cabin, the restaurant and bar were closed. This meant for included breakfast you had to make the hike to Ficus hotel nearby (which looked MUCH better by the way). They had free Wifi, but it didn't work in our cabin.

Another main issue was that there was no common place to go and relax and read a book or something. The porch on the cabin was WAY too uncomfortable for that.

Finally, apparently they forgot to charge our credit card when they booked a zip lining tour for us. They called our room in San Jose after we left so that we could give them our credit card. However, they wouldn't just let us give them the number over the phone. They insisted on this complicated e-mailing of a document, which we had to fill out and scan back, etc. Now we didn't have easy access to a scanner at our hotel in San Jose, so we told them we would just do it when we got home. But this wasn't good enough for them. Now the mistake was theirs and they wouldn't accept over the phone payment or to wait 2 days. They called our hotel room in San Jose SEVEN times to bug us about hurrying up to send them payment! Finally we found scanner but they said it didn't come up dark enough on their computer so we had to go do it again! They called us up until about 8pm. RIDICULOUS

PROS:
Good location

CONS:
Not very clean. Needs remodeling.
Wifi isn't great
No place to read a book or relax that's comfortable
Paper thin walls

Overall, I would think you'd HAVE to be able to do better!!!

These guys couldn't have been more helpful-the location is great-just a short stroll to restaurants and supermarket-and the price was just right-thanks Evan and Bryanner-made my trip and even arranged my cross border travel-the soda next door has some great food too. The bus stop to the biological reserve is just across the road

Found myself to be the only guest in my dorm for two nights. Right in the centre of small but handy Santa Elena. The 6 bed dorm was extremely clean, extra blankets & ensuite bathroom. I had hot water each shower & fast wifi reached my room. Like most places in town you will receive some road noise, no lockers seen. Added bonus was a cooked breakfast (coffee, juice, fruit & omelette toast or pancake), laundry took less than two hours, but even better the help from staff. I booked a Aventura SkyTrek and Santamaria Night Walk through the main desk and reception came and got me when the shuttle arrived each time. They told me how to purchase a ticket & catch the bus to San Jose. I really appreciated that the manager offered me a lift to the bus station in concern that my backpack was heavy. All round good facilities & staff at a much better price than the other hostels when booking at that time.

Bryanner and Evan were fantastic and we trusted them enough to not even try to negotiate. They booked our rafting, gave us a free breakfast and even got us a taxi when our bus to the night walk forgot us. Great rooms, excellent price and the restaurant to the left of the hotel is very good and cheap.

Room Tip: We had a ground floor double room. Spacious and clean, the best we found in Monteverde.

We had two rooms for two nights as part of a package. This hotel was a comfortable hotel, simple yet very nice. We were in an 8 room building detached from the lobby. All rooms were either in this building or stand alone cabins. The rooms were clean and comfortable cabin type rooms. Although not fancy, the location was great. We had monkeys in the trees hanging out around the lobby and they were absolutely adorable. When picked up the other people on the van got out to take pictures of our monkeys! Staff was very friendly and helpful. On site restaurant was closed but sister hotel a short distance with a great view. We were literally in the clouds.

Room Tip: Hotel cluser and private cabins looked lovely dotted along the property not far from lobby. Althoug...

We booked this hotel on line while travelling for month in Costa Rica. Monteverde seemed very expensive and this hotel looked like an affordable choice. Not cheap just affordable. Off the beaten path but close to everything we were happily surpised when first arriving. Once inside the cabina we noticed it was run down. It was hot with only two windows, (without screens) and 1 fan for 3 rooms. In the evening we were watching TV when a spider emerged from my husbands pillow. We understand that sometimes this happens in different climates. Then out of the corner of my eye I thought there was a huge beetle on the floor, nope it was a large scorpian that we immediately squashed. Within a few minutes, while trying to calm down a spider landed on my arm. Well that did it for sleeping! We then noticed that there was a 1/4inch gap under the door to outside. We also had a very poorly placed motion light outside our main window. This light went off every few seconds ALL night long! Two days at this hotel was more than enough and I would suggest to anyone thinking of this place to look further!
