“Monteverde Trainforest Railroad Ride”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

We were told about the train ride from the girl working the front desk at the Heliconia Hotel In San Elena in the Monteverde area. When we arrived by taxi (very cheap) it was a beautiful wooden/glass structure. They have a fabulous restaurant at the top where we enjoyed a great lunch before the train arrived. We rode the train on the round trip ride. Our guide was so very nice and knowledgable about plants and animals in the area. Half way around we stopped for coffee and cookies then boarded the train which has been turned around by the two guys and we rode back to the station. This is a really nice ride and very good for kids espeically but hey, my husband and I are in our 60s and we loved it!!!!

“Another unique experience in Monteverde”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

I went on the TrainForest tour in April whilst visiting Monteverde for the first time with a friend. The train snakes down a hill through some gardens and then continues through some secondary forest, providing a unique and refreshing way to enjoy the scenery. At the end of the line, a spectacular view of Arenal Volcano awaits (weather permitting). Coffee and small snacks are provided after a 20 minute guided hike through some denser forest, where we were able to see and listen to various birds. The whole experience is well paced and should be enjoyable for all ages. An audio commentary was provided throughout the train journey via an intercom, which explained some interesting facts about Costa Rican plants and wildlife, as well as the history of this small railway.

The TrainForest seemed very under-subscribed compared to other tours we had been on in Monteverde, but no less worthwhile. Student rates were available for foreigners as well as Costa Rican nationals, and the main station building was modern and well kept, and surprisingly large featuring a gift shop and dining area (which is possibly only available for pre-booked groups). After you have been on the canopy tours and the sky tram, this attraction is definitely worth a visit!

“Enjoyable ride - lots to see.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

I think some of the previous reviews posted are about Monteverde in general rather than the trainforest attraction - no ziplines here!

We finished our planned activities in Monteverde earlier in the day than planned and saw a sign for the Trainforest so thought we would check it out. We arrived and were told there would be a train departure shortly. The attraction seemed to be very underused - there was a massive restaurant with a total of 3 people in it, and a gift shop. We got on the train, as did the 3 people in the restaurant and off it went. The train was probably operating at under 5% of its capacity. There was a driver and guard on the train. The guard also served as a tour guide and made bilingual Spanish and English announcements as we went through the forest. These were about the cloud forest in one direction and about building the railway and the train in the other direction - all very interesting.

At the station at the end of the line we were able to stop and enjoy a beautiful view of Arenal, before going on a short walk into the forest where various birds and a snake were pointed out to us. The walk was not strenuous but I did notice a selection of walking sticks were provided which would be useful for the elderly or anyone with disabilities. While we were away on the walk the train driver prepared some complimentary refreshments.

When the train was returning to the main station we passed a train coming the other way which also had about 5 passengers on it. I hope this attraction survives - as they seemed to be struggling for customers during our visit. A very excursion, especially if you need a break from strenuous activities!

“Alternative safe activity to see nature!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2012

It is a ideal family activity with young children or those who are unable to see the rainforest through any other active way. It is an small train that takes you on about a 60-90 minute train ride (with a break in the middle) through the rainforest. There are plastic flaps that come down on the sides for weather. The train stops at a clearing for about 30 minutes where it turns around for the return trip. There is a bathroom at the stop and they serve a drink and some cookies. At the clearing there is a lovely view of the Volcano and the lake, weather permitting. After all, you are in the Cloud Forest. We were lucky. We had a beautiful view when we arrived. By the time we left our stop, the clouds had swept in and the view was no more. There is a path where you can take a short hike if you choose. The train personnel were very accommodating and were willing to show anyone, especially children, several creepy crawlies that were around, explaining them in great details.
The tour picks you up from your hotel and takes you to and from the train.
My only negative was the tour guide. The tour was in English and her English was extremely difficult to understand. I also thought that since this was our only opportunity to venture into the rainforest, she could have given us more details as we rode through the rainforest about the rainforest, but perhaps that is an American (USA) thing. So, for us it was just an lovely train ride and a nice view of the volcano and lake and a short hike into the rainforest and some cookies and hot chocolate. Lovely, but really would have like to learned more about the rainforest on this excursion, but it is an alternative to doing anything physical in Monteverde.

“Nature at its best”

Don't miss seen this great rain forest. We went in the rain and would do it again if we had to. Of course it is better if it is not raining. I have done this twice.
