“Noveau Tapas in Costa Rica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2012

Back at home we have what I refer to as noveau tapas - small plates of highly decorated, tasty food. So, we decided to try the local version in Monteverde/Santa Elena based on TA reviews. No dissappointment, and complete satification. Great, reasonably priced cocktails, and the 11 yo daughter enjoyed her fancy limeaide. In fact, she gave the whole meal 2 thumbs up - rare for her. We tried about 1/3 of the menu and it was all excellent (as good as what we get back home, but with some great tropical variations). The service was friendly and attentive, and the price was quite reasonable - we are, after all, in a big tourist area. The only somewhat negative comment I can make is that the menu being in US dollars and the bill in Colones is a bit bizarre and confusing. Stick to the local currency, geez, we can figure it out.

“Great food! Tapas style.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012 via mobile

Beautiful ambiance, very good drinks, and great tapas style food! Service was awesome. The waitresses did their best to accommodate a group of annoying, obnoxious, entitled American tourists. Again, they were very professional.

Food was a bit on the high side for the area but well worth it!

“Was suprised by how good this place was - a must try”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2012

We sent to Chimera based on the Tripadvisor recommendation. My gf asked the server what was good on the menu and he said "everything." He wasn't kidding. We had 5 dishes and everything was very impressive. Although our dishes were varied, they were all well executed. We had the Gazpacho, palm salad, shrimp coconut curry rice dish, beef with sauce, oninon rings (it's a tapas restuarant). All of the ingredients were fresh. The beef was perfectly done. Palm salad was delicious and the shrimp coconut curry dish was as good as any high end restaurant in Los Angeles, where we are from. Really good prices too. One of the things that bothered me about Costa Rica was the prices -- food everywhere was much more expensive than Los Angeles; and L.A. is not cheap. Even in a small town like Monte Verde, a hamburger will run you $12 and a burrito for $10. La Fortuna was worse! They are probably used to the gringo price points and locals probably eat at the small "soda"s with local prices. But Chimera was suprisingly a good value. Even for tapsa, the portions were healthy sizes. We proabably ordered too much and two people can share 3 dishes. Skip the wine -- not a great selection. Perhaps you can bring your own. This was the best meal we had in Costa Rica and to find it in a small gem of a town like Santa Elena was a delight.

Spent two weeks travelling around costa rica and this was without doubt the best meal of the fortnight. Good plate sizes, tasty options and friendly staff.
