2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 weeks ago

I uses to love coming here for vacations and relaxing time, actually this is my 4th visit in the last 2 years and I probably won't return again, this time food was just very poor quality, like if they cant afford a chef to even taste the food, this is not only my opinion, I've talked to some other visitors and they think similar.
Another aspect is that they do have preferences among visitors; why do I say that? let me tell you: besides the restaurant you can reserve a special dinner at an apart restaurant inside the hotel, me and my girlfriend were told that we have to reserve between 8am and 9am to be able to get a space, we came at 8:15am and they told us that everything was busy by that time, at first we thought that we came late but later on we realized that the whole 2 apart restaurants were full of people from Spain, that was the hotel who reserved the spaces just to make a good impression.
I do not mind that, what I dislike is that they lied to me and my girl and I hate liars and that's why I do not trust this place any more.

We stayed at this resort at the end of an active week in Costa Rica.
I would have been disappointed in this resort if we were here for more than 2 nights.

The resort has passed it's time. Whilst scenic with lovely gardens, it has a sad vibe. In March, it was more than half empty. The nightly entertainment all but absent.

The beach poorly kept and un loved.

The pool was great.

The food was the worst I ate in Costa Rica. The staff were deflated and mostly dismissive.

As it was the end of my vacation, I was content to sit pool side and sip a coctail. If this had been the main stay of my holidays, I would have been upset.

Booked via a package from Toronto, I found the hotel overpriced, but comfortable.

Getting to the hotel is a big pain by ferry and car/bus/taxi. It just seems so out of the way, and the beach isn't the best sand. Going the ferry route takes to the main airport in San Jose takes almost a full day.
Flying to Tambor airport gives you great views over the bay. Definitely worth it.

The beach is quite large. Walk for almost an hour in each direction. Again, not the best sand, but large and peaceful. Definitely not fighting for a beach chair here, ever! The tide is significant, the waves are fun. The temperature of the water is always pleasant. It was often too windy for kayaking, etc.

The hotel grounds are very very well kept. Plantation style buildings.
The rooms are slightly dated. No mini-bottles of body lotion, but you can get a free shoe-horn! The all-inclusive mini-bar fridge in the room is almost always lacking beer. There are iguanas everywhere. Macaws too. People come to Costa Rica for the nature, and you don't have it much better than at the hotel.

The food is typical all-inclusive resort food. You can find good things. The fruit was always good. Some days there was no espresso, that was a big problem for some people.
The Japanese restaurant wasn't worth it at all. The beachside "el rancho" was better, but often many menu items were unavailable.

Even though it's all-inclusive, free wifi internet is definitely not included. And they charge you $7-10 a day to access it. Such a rip-off. Hotels should offer it for free, especially at an all-inclusive hotel.

The excursions are so ridiculously overpriced that it's insulting. $75 USD a person for a "sunset" dinner! $70USD for ziplining. To be fair, it's not the hotel's fault. The prices in this part of Costa Rica are very expensive. Typically the excursions mean going with the tour operator's schedule, and picking up others along the way. This is standard all over, but if I'm paying this kind of money, I might as well take a taxi to the ziplining place, or the the sunset beach and book it on my own terms, and return when I want. Again, not the fault of the hotel. The excursion reps were very kind, and the prices they quoted for taxis were the standard rates in the region.

The resort has a lot of Costa Ricans visiting for weekends. That's a nice element that I didn't expect. Lots of families and laughter. Much better this way than only have guests from Canada/America.

The entertainment was exceptionally good. Very good dancing, acrobatics, etc. They deserve a raise! Each night was a different theme. Lots of work went into this.

Overall, the staff were incredibly kind, gracious, generous, and helpful.

Room Tip: If you want to sleep to the sound of the ocean, try rooms on the edge of the property, but you might...

Indeed working in identifying possible mishaps relating our costumer main satisfaction. It is very you also enjoyed the different flora and fauna which the hotel is surrounded by, the sea waving, El rancho restaurant and the entertainment.

Barceló Tambor Beach hotel is situated 3 hours away from Juan Santamaría International Airport. From where you can take the main high way towards Puntarenas and then continue until Puntarenas and then take your trip on the ferry, place where you will witness the beauty that the gulf of Nicoya have, or if you rather taking an airplane to get until Tambor, likewise it will be a experience in which you will enjoy the natural lush and richness of our country. We count on café express service in the Buffet restaurant, Snack Palenque, “El rancho restaurant” that is available for you during the time of service.

We fully regret the major inconvenient that it could produce the lack of raw material and we have proceeded to make a new selection the new providers and products, the one we can easily store in order to avoid this kind of situations.

Taking in consideration your observation referred to body lotion, minibar stuff and the different outdoors that are offered in our resort.

This resort has beautiful grounds and very relaxing feel, Never more that than a few people in line at the bars or restaurants. The weather was perfect .Only down side was the shows were all in Spanish. Tip: go to the south side of the resort in the morning to see the monkeys in the trees.

The Barcelo Tambor Beach is a great place to stay if you are only looking for a short stay. We stayed there for two nights and definitely enjoyed ourselves. If you are looking to relax and enjoy the sun, then go here and enjoy the swim-up bar, watch the macaws fly around above you, and take note of the curiously-inquisitive iguanas that roam the resort. It makes for a wonderful experience.

This was our first time at a resort, and while we are not resort people, I can tell you that other guests noted that this experience was certainly comparable to other resorts elsewhere. Everything is all inclusive except for the excursions (consider horseback riding) and the 'A la Carte' food is certainly delicious (steakhouse and Japanese). While I did not get the impression that it is a resort for young people, it comes across as a resort for couples who just want to be alone together. Never a bad thing.

The downsides of the resort did not detract from our experience, but in a longer stay they might. To start, the beach is not the attraction of the resort; the pool area is. While the beach is beautiful and long, it is extremely shallow, so one must go very far out to get any real swimming in. Very few people spent time on the beach.

Additionally, though the drinks were steep, they were not the best and the ones in the pool were forgettable. The food was also alright, but did not feature any local Costa Rican food unfortunately. Wireless is also quite expensive and if you are looking for any excursions, Tambor is quite far away from other locations, so perhaps this is not the resort for you. Additionally, there are not many excursions on offer.

All in all, if you are looking for a great place to relax for a couple of days, then this place is highly recommended. Great sleeps, beautiful sunshine, and a very relaxing environment all combine to make you wish you did not have to go home. If you do have to go home, consider flying between Tambor and San Jose. It is quite affordable and so much faster. Anything beats a 5am ferry ride.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the forest; monkeys tend to make their way through the trees in the earlier mornin...

Well where do I start. This was the first time we have traveled to Costa Rica and It wont be the last. After a 5 hr plane ride to San Jose We were greeted by Nolitours and off to the Ferry at Puntarenas. Great scenery and lots of hills. The ferry ride was more than an hour but beautiful view of the gulf of Nicoya. Wish we had the option of flying direct to Tambor and save more time to enjoy the Resort. Arrived at Paquera and off to Barecleo Tambor. Arrived and had no problem booking in to our room as there was only 4 of us that was on the mini bus.The grounds are magnificent and well taken care off. The Iguanas, squirrels, and doves kept busy looking for hand outs but didn't bother us at all. The scarlet Macaws flying over head and in the bird sanctuary were breath taking to see and its good to see the re introducing of endangered animals back into the wild. The parrots greeted us with Ohla. The howler monkeys religiously arrived around 5 pm to bask in the shade and cool off. What a hair raising sound they make!!
The pool was clean and warm and enjoyed every minute. The pool activities helped wear off some of the drinks. The weather was nothing but perfect as we had 7 days of full sunshine and no clouds. Couldn't ask for better.
The bartenders especially Kaylor in the main bar beside the stage was so amazing in making us feel like a close friends. I told him how to make a peralyser drink and he liked it. He should be recognized for his efforts as he works so hard at what he does. The bingo they had before the main entertainment was hard to follow. I know that Spanish is you main language, but it would have been nice to understand the jokes as we felt out of place. We laughed anyways.
The food in the buffet was excellent and always a variety for everyone. The only draw back was at the steak house. My wife asked for here steak to be well done and it came between medium rare to medium. The ceaser salad was supper salty and the portions of veggies were small.
The beach was fabulous and took a walk at low tide to Tambor, a small village at the west end of the beach. We purchased some liquor and as we were heading out of the local grocery store the worker came out and gave us a a small bottle of the local Costa Rican 5 year old rum as a gift. That made our trip even more unbelievable. At night the stars were so bright and felt like you could reach out and grasp them. The security was present all the time and we felt very safe at all times.
Went to Tortuga Island snorkeling and had a blast. Saw tons of fish and lots of crabs running along the white sand beach. The bbq was excellent and the beers were cold.
Went to the Curu wildlife reserve and Douglas our guide was awsome and we would recommend him as a guide as he new so much as if you went by your self you would enjoy it as much. We learned many things about the animals and foliage of Costa Rica. About 10 white faced capuchin mokeys gave us a show and were almost at touching distance. The pictures were amazing. Saw local deer, butter flies, rodents, and herons.

This trip was the most memorable one we have taken and plan on going back to this resort as its a resort away from the big cities and we felt soooo relaxed.

The only thing is that we wished that Nolitours gave us the option of the plane ride not the Ferry to bet us back to San Jose airport as getting up at 3 a.m. and the ferry ride at 5:30 a.m. then the long ride to the airport used up to many days of enjoying the resort. Didn't get home till 1:00 a.m. the next morning and made for a long long day.

Thanks again for a wonderful experiance Barcelo Tamabor Beach Resort.

Room Tip: Ask for room 610 or close as its away from the stage area.

We just returned from our first stay in this hotel and I must say that except for a few minor details it was an excellent experience. This was one of the first (if not the first) all-inclusive beach resorts in Costa Rica and it was great to receive again the good old all inclusive treatment.

If coming from the San José area, you'll need to take the Paquera Ferry in Puntarenas to get here, it takes about 1:10 to cross the Nicoya Gulf and the ride is nice... You could also travel by car through the "puente de la amistad" but the distance is more than twice and you'll be forced into 25km of the most extreme mountain dirt road, which I would only recommend to experienced drivers in a 4x4 car. If getting here through Liberia Airport or the North Guanacaste Area, the latter may be your only choice...

Despite this is not a new hotel, it is very well maintained, outdoor spaces and gardens are beautifully laid out and well taken care of, the rooms are grouped in 2-story buildings and even the farther ones are not too far from the restaurants, pools and bars. You'll really get up-close to wildlife here: red macaws fly by often and there is even a shelter for them in the hotel; coatis and racoons roam by at night, you'll also see tons of iguanas in the pools and gardens as well as howler monkeys in the taller trees, and if you're not careful you'll be sharing your pool-side snacks and even your lunch with squirrels.

The hotel itself is quite good, rooms are clean and well equipped, although the age of the property shows off in some of the bedroom furniture and bathroom... still everything in our room worked fine. You have a stocked coffee maker in the room and a mini fridge, and you'll get complimentary bottled water and soft drinks every day. I found the food in the buffet quite good and varied, they use theme nights for dinner so you will find something for everyone. Snack bars are quite generous and you can order as many drinks and cocktails as you wish in the several bars there are around the pools, restaurant and reception area. I didn't attend the shows/night entertainment but I heard they were good enough.

The only low points I found, besides the aged look of some of the room furniture and bathroom pieces, was the check in process: a bit messy but understandable given we checked in on a saturday noon. Also we tried "El rancho", one of the "a la carte" restaurants serving beef and seafood and honestly it left a lot to be desired: Portions were tiny for most dishes and they weren't very tasty... service was not great either, it made us miss the buffet that night. Finally, no free wi-fi... really? it's 2015 already! but I guess that forces you to live a bit far from your devices.

All in all, a very good experience I look forward to repeat soon, some rough edges here and there but it got us back to the goodness of the local all inclusive resorts, and for the price, it can't be beat.

Room Tip: I have the feeling that 2nd floor rooms are better, some of them have an oversized balcony with a ha...
