Me and my girlfriend stumbled on this small hotel with Tripadvisor. We weren't sure since there weren't many reviews, but are so happy to have stayed there!
When we arrived, the owner Sam was working on his property and was obviously doing some noise. We were a bit reluctant as we were affraid the noise would continue during our stay, but Sam actually stopped any work involving noise during our full 2 night stay. He instead worked on maintaining the numerous plants on the property, as it doesn't do any noise. We didn't even have to ask! Our nights were pretty close to the most quiet we've had in Costa Rica, Tambor is a very quiet town! There is only one night per week where a Karaoke bar completely across town has a special night, which you can barely hear from the room. We are light sleepers and had no problem falling asleep despite this.
The rooms are still a little rough around the edges (such as old doors that are hard to open/close or an AC unit that leaks a little bit) since the remodeling is not quite finished, but what has been done so far is absolutely great. The ceilings, nighttables and lamps are made from exquisite exotic wood with a very shiny lacquer on it, and the shower is roomy with the classic electric shower heads from Costa Rica. However those are newer models and work much better than the other ones we tried during our stays elsewhere. For the price we paid (34000 colones/ 68US$ for two nights), it was an absolute deal! I'm sure this will get more expensive as more rooms get finished, so I would take this deal while it passes. I can see this place getting at 50-60$/night very soon.
We also had a chance to taste Sam's pizzas. They are DELICIOUS. The menu is limited, but the two pizzas we had were absolutely great. Fresh ingredient on a perfectly cooked thin crust in a wood oven, at a truly great price! Expect to pay approx 15-20$ for a pizza big enough for two hungry people with a few beers.
Also, Sam was kind enough to book us a tour at the nearby Tortuga Islands which is just a short 20 mins drive. We loved going to those empty beaches and the snorkeling was nice. There is better snorkeling elsewhere in the qorld, but it has been the best we had in Costa Rica.
Finally, we also got to meet the owners dog. I can't remember her name, but she is absolutely adorable. She is a stray dog that was dropped in front two months ago, and Sam took her to a vet and adopted her! We love dogs so we were happy to play with her, but if you are not a dog lover, Sam keeps her away when the restaurant is open so do not worry about it!
If you pass by Tambor, definitely crash at Sam's place and eat a few pizzas. You will love it!
