“Beautiful Clandestino”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

We spend 3 nights in this resort and we loved it. It was very different from previous places where we have been. We were coming from Arenal, we stop in Jaco to do some grocery and I was very happy we did not choose to stay there. To much North American style. When we arrived to Parita, the feeling was completely different. We where crossing a small fisherman's village, we could feel the authenticity of there life. The Clandestino Beach resort is facing the ocean a cross the street. The beach has black sand and Pacific is powerfully gowning. Sunrise and sunset are breath taking. The owner of the resort is a very charming lady. We were warmly welcome. She gave us a lot of information about the surrounding area, especially for Manuel Antonio. The Clandestino resort has maybe 15-20 villas and they are surrounded by beautiful garden. The interior of our villa was very modern and richly designed. The decoration and furniture were exclusively from bamboo. Two walls of window, cathedral ceiling, beautiful terrace with hammock and light curtains all over. Air conditioner and mini bar in the room. The resort has a big pool with the view on the ocean. In the evening we went to a Soda (local restaurant/terrace) not far from hotel and we had the best Ceviche in our life. Next day we went on the boat with a local fisherman to see the mangroves and there eco system. The river was full of crocodiles. It was very impressive. The owner of the hotel make arrangement for us for this tour and again it was exactly what we where looking for. Very authentic experience and very reasonable price. We visited also Manuel Antonio Park. You walk trough the park to see the wild life and wild beaches, its breath taking. We enjoyed the swimming in this calm water of the lagoon. Unfortunately, everything around the parkwas the most touristic place, we hade chance to visit in Costa Rica. The local people where trying to sell us expensive parking spot trying to convince us that is much cheaper then at the entrance at Manuel Antonio Park and there where very aggressive and convincing. We where warned by the owner of the resort, we just drove directly to the Parc with free parking. Clandestino beach...we will never forget you and definitely we will come back again.

We only stayed for one night but wish we could have stayed a week. We arrived at sunset and were greeted by a lovely receptionist. It is literally less than 100 metres to the beach and it is beautiful and unspoilt. The restaurant was great and not very expensive (a bit different to my experience in Tamarindo). The pool is beautiful. There is plenty of areas just to chill out and relax. Our room was all made from local product (like bamboo) and there was a real environmental consciousness about the place that we liked. One day we will return.

Room Tip: We stayed in a room which was on the right as you faced the beach and was near the pool. It felt ver...

Not sure where to start. How about Diana Conforti a Lady with a vision. Guillem Casas is Diana's son and he was most helpful by providing surf boards to my 10yr daughter and explaining tides and safety of the waves. She spent hours in the ocean a 30 second walk from the resort. Natalia Mas who came over from Madrid is a true hostess and took great care of all are needs. Which were limited as this location had everything. It is a 20 minute drive from the road, but if you do not want to stay in Manuel Antonio which is a huge tourist trap. It is a 35-45 minute drive from the quiet secluded resort. The rooms are just amazing, all made from bamboo, even the closet, beds, towel rail and chairs. Clean is not the word, spotless would be the word. The pool is extremely clean and refreshing and the waterfall is a massage in its self. Breakfast included and they made it to order, with fruit that would just melt in your mouth. Diana wanted to make everything perfect and she negotiated the excursions that we did. We had Humberto from Iguana Tours that bought the horses right over to the resort in a trailer and we rode for about 3 hours all the way down the beach. Great scenery and very knowledgeable on the area. We did get hit by a huge storm on the way back watching the lightening over the ocean was priceless. Highly recommend. We also did the H2o white water rafting, well worth it. We visited the little local restaurant on the corner off the main road. It was called Chicharronera Y Marisqueria "Chepe". Many locals were there and the food was great. We also eat at the resort and never had an issue. Yes, there are mosquito's, but living in South Florida you know that once the sun goes down, wait an hour and use bug spray. You will be fine and our waiter lite a coil mosquito repellent. Also remember where you are. You will also see the odd negative comment, but read between the lines. Always use the safe in the rooms, and do not leave valuables out. We booked for 3 nights and stayed for 4. Diana gave us a map for a 2 1/2 hour driving route to San Jose Airport. We made it in plenty of time for our flight. I would revisit this resort in a heart beat and will in the future.

Room Tip: All the rooms are the same, you cannot go wrong. When you take a shower you will be amazed. I have n...

The food is terrible, you can not sit outside the mosquitos eat you alive, everything is open not screened in. There is a dengue warning out for that area. The waiters cheated. Do not go there.
The ocean is very dangerous, lots of rip tides and currents. I heared that at least 3 people die on that beach every year.

Room Tip: Stay in the room keep it closed or you will be eaten alive

Hello Petter,

it's a shame you did not like the restaurant. But you didn't write what you don't like and it's weird because you and your friends left nothing on their plates.

We buy the best raw materials and we have one of the best chefs in Costa Rica. We have very many Customers that comes from San Jose, Quepos and Jaco only to eat and spend the day in the Clandestino Beach Resort.

Let's see the second part of your review.

You can find a few mosquitoes in the area of the beach at night but not in the restaurant.

You lie! There is NO dengue in the Palo Seco area. You can check it by calling the health agency of Parrita.

Regarding deaths in the ocean, it seems that you really hear wrong. Across the Pacific Ocean, in the Atlantic Ocean and even in the Mediterranean Sea, in all the oceans every year people die by currents.
In front of the resort, there are days where you can go swimming at 300m. And there are days that the waves are strong and is best left to the surfers enjoy.

So that's why we have a turtle shaped pool 30 meters long just in front the sea...

Pura Vida from Clandestino Beach Resort.

Stayed here with my wife for only one night (wish it could have been more) since we were staying in a close by condo/hotel and happened to drive by and decided to extend our stay one more night in this hotel. We inquired and the owners daughter gave us a very decent "cash" price for the night. Service from check-in to check out was outstanding. The owners daughter herself took us to the room and explained everything. She did this with all the other guest that arrived after us. She was very professional/courteous and quite friendly, not expected after the review from the "doctor" a couple of reviews down.

The rooms are definitely up there comparable with a 4 star hotel room (without the familiarity of a hyatt/marriot/intercon mundane hotel room). Beds are WONDERFUL... decor is very tropical, using a lot of bamboo. Each room has it's own private patio surrounded with white curtains and a couple of hammocks, perfect for those just wanting to laze around!!!

The hotel itself has just 12 rooms, divided in 3 different "buildings", 4 rooms to each. It is set up so that the patios are not facing each other nor next to each other, very well thought of, privacy galore!!! As for the previous reviewer who found it "hard" to find his/her room, I beg to differ because as I just mentioned it's only 12 rooms total!!! Flat Inch TV, minibar, in-room-safe, upscale bathroom amenities, fluffy towels, wifi, garden/jungle or beach/pool views, in other words, everything one needs is right there. We even had "room service" as we ordered in the restaurant about 5 PM or so and requested for them to take the food to our room around 6:30ish... Got there earlier which was good since it started raining cats and dogs soon after we got our food delivered! We had pasta dishes and they were both very good so no complaints there. Restaurant prices are also in par with a hotel of this caliber in just about any beach in CR. The included breakfast is plenty enough as it included 2 eggs your way, 2 slices of bacon, fruit platter (plenty), toast w/butter and jam, gallo pinto and OJ + Coffee. Although the waiter referred to it as a "continental" breakfast, it was much more than that as it was really a combo of a full american breakfast with a touch of tico breakfast.

The beach, across a dirt road from the pool/rest, is the kind of beach that I would call perfect. Perfect for long walks, perfect for sitting in the various hammocks that the hotel has set up under swaying palm trees, Perfect to just relax and let the hourssss pass by : )

You might want to think twice though if you are planning on getting in the water. This beach is known for dangerous currents so even experienced swimmers should be very careful. Anyways the pool is more than adequate if you are looking into getting in the water as it is definitely large considering the size of the hotel.

I have traveled extensively throughout CR since I have been living in CR for more than 30 years ever since my family relocated, back in the late 70's, from the Philippines to CR. This is actually the first time we found ourselves in this area since we are always looking for something "off the beaten path"--This place fits that description perfectly!. The beach is comparable to beaches in the Puerto Viejo/Manzanillo (Limon) and also to the beaches in the Puerto Jimenez area. Both beaches however require a LOT of driving as compared to 2 hours+ to get to this hotel from the San Jose area. We will definitely be back!!!

In closing, if you are looking for a quiet romantic getaway, off the beaten path, away from the crowds, in a picture perfect beach location, a place to get away from it all then this place is definitely for you. However if you need "night life", lots of restuarant/bar choices, souvenir sellers all over the place and want the cancun/waikiki beach experience then you are probably better off going somewhere else.

As for me and my wife, we can't wait to go back and take our two college aged daughters here as I am sure that they will also love the place!!!

Another thing, on the way here, in the town of Parrita, you should stock up on snacks, drinks, beers/cigarretes (?) etc etc as there are no stores close by to buy anything. Although the room minibar has drinks/snacks, if you want to save some $ then the Pali or Megasuper in Parrita has all the basics.

Room Tip: Ask for a beach/pool view room if possible, although probably more expensive than a garden view.

This hotel had the perfect amount of simple luxury paired with Costa Rican charm. We stayed for 2 nights and wish we could have stayed for more. The rooms are simple but nice. They have large white curtains outside of each room to keep the mosquitoes away and it really helped. My husband and I were able to sit outside, drink wine, listen to the rain and Bob Marley music station without getting eaten alive. We were in Costa Rica for two weeks, stayed in a bunch of hotels (some 5 star places) and Clandestino was by far our favorite. We will be returning...hopefully VERY soon!
