“Simply amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2013

This hotel had the perfect amount of simple luxury paired with Costa Rican charm. We stayed for 2 nights and wish we could have stayed for more. The rooms are simple but nice. They have large white curtains outside of each room to keep the mosquitoes away and it really helped. My husband and I were able to sit outside, drink wine, listen to the rain and Bob Marley music station without getting eaten alive. We were in Costa Rica for two weeks, stayed in a bunch of hotels (some 5 star places) and Clandestino was by far our favorite. We will be returning...hopefully VERY soon!

I am one the local doctors at this community and decided to go for lunch with my mother and our two very well behaved (princess-like) puppies. When we arrived at the hotel we decided to go to the far side of the pool, away from the restaurant to sit at the beach chairs and enjoy our lunch there. One of my puppies climbed on the beach chair a couple of seconds and then went off, that was when the owner came yelling (in the most unpleasant manner possible) from 100 yards away that people sit on those chairs and we were not allowed to have the dogs sitting there. My mother did not find that to be such a problem so she said "Ok". Even when my mother agreed with her she continued yelling, it took my mom five attempts of saying "yes, we understand, that is ok..." until I came to tell her that the yelling was completely out of order, that we understood what she was saying, that we had already agreed with her and that our spanish was perfect, no need to keep on yelling.

After that incident, we clearly decided to have lunch in a different restaurant where our puppies wouldn't be such an issue.

When I came home I immediately reached for the computer and googled hotel reviews. I must say I initially just thought she was a very rude lady, now, after reading the nightmare reviews from other people it is clear... this woman needs professional help.

Better go to a more modest location like Hotel La Isla, where the staff and the food are way better :)

Room Tip: Go somewhere else

It is absolutely outrageous that you dare to write a review when they have not even been guests of the hotel or restaurant.

Directly you decided to enter in private property , with two big dogs without asking. But not only that, you decided without asking, they would eat in the pool loungers and so accommodated their dogs on the sun loungers customers who were staying at the hotel and also watching not understanding what they were doing ,completly indignant.

You can't speak of lack of education when they have behaved as if they were at home in a private business.

also I inform you we do not allow eating in the pool area for hygiene, so we have a restaurant overlooking the sea.

And with dogs, we have no problem, is with dog owners who have no education. We have 6 dogs in the hotel and never they create any problem.

Don't say that you decided to go to another place, we ask you for leave the hotel because your behavior was inappropriate!

You can not comment the quality of the restaurant or the staff because you don't stayed.

I hope next time you go to an hotel with your dogs you will think for ask permission...

We chose this hotel based on the good reviews, what a mistake! We went there with family. First of all the hotel was a bit deserted. The hotel is nice, but that's all to it. The second night we were there we decided to take a drive to the next town. When arrived we realized someone broke into our room and ROBBED ALL OUR STUFF. They took my brother in laws IPAD, all our cellphones, clothes, cameras,my luggage with most of my clothes, our shower bags, cologne, even our wet bathing suites that were left outside to dry! They even trashed the room looking for more valuables. We notified the front desk and spoke to the owner. They called the police and we made a report. We came to the conclusion that it had to be someone from the hotel itself, An Inside job. The owner seemed concerned and assured us she would reimburse us everything that was lost, to give her a couple weeks, That was until we left... It has been over one month. We have called her over ten times. She gives us the run around and tells us it's not "Her" problem, we need to file a claim with her insurance company, but refuses to give us her insurance info. This robbery ruined our whole vacation. We didn't have most of our stuff. This Hotel is not safe especially if your traveling with your children.

Good morning.

Sorry but i have to tell you that is one of the safest hotels throughout the area, 32 security cameras, safes in rooms, 6 dogs, guardian armed night, closing at 9:30 pm the entrance to the hotel. The insurance cover all our customers both damage physical and material.

Never any customer missed anything in his room, when staff find something forgotten, they deliver it immediately to reception, and this has happened several times... then we sent by postal the items (passports, rings, gold watches, money, Ipod etc .... This in my opinion, is to be an honest hotel staff.

Both the police and insurance, ensured that the door was not locked and so the insurance does not cover anything. (This is true in all countries)
When police and the insurance asked for the code numbers of the electronics items assumptions stolen, for find the location, they refused to deliver .... very suspicious .... was delivered three weeks later when no longer able to perform localization. Police called to tell me so suspicious of their behavior , they were the first to doubt that you had something to do with the robbery... might call scam attempt.

You called the travel agency of the hotel to get their money back, claiming your stay was not here at the hotel. This comment denies.

It is very strange that you say all these bad reviews of the hotel, when the going was told the hotel was a beautiful paradise, spotlessly clean, superb staff, delicious food, excellent in all aspects and even giving me two kisses goodbye.

If you want to hurt the hotel do not think they will achieve, 99% of customers who enjoyed the facilities only have good comments about us.

We have to defend us the lies that you say.

Sir, everybody here , both hotel managers, police and insurance agents, doubt very much of your declarations.

I'm sorry but the hotel is not going to pay your trip to Costa Rica for free ...

My stay here has been one of the best hotel experiences in memory. The hotel is extremely well maintained, right on the beach and the property is covered in tropical plants and trees. Mangos literally fall onto your doorstep. The beach is basically deserted and the waves are very big at times so really fun to watch. The staff are all very nice and helpful.

The rooms are extremely comfortable and very clean. We stayed in two different rooms and both were excellent.

The area is safe and nobody hassles you when you're out. We had beach fires at night and cooked our dinners over the fire while watching the most amazing lightning storms out at sea.

Mostly we just drank champagne under a palm tree in the days and watched the waves coming and going.

If you like dogs you'll really enjoy the ones living around the hotel. They'll follow you on your beach walks and hang out with you if you want them to. This really added to the charm. The hotel also has dogs which are very well cared for and pleasant to have around.

We intended to stay just one night but ended up spending almost all week and didn't want to leave. Anyone looking for a true Costa Rican beach experience would be making a great choice by staying here.

Fantastic stay at Clandestino for four nights! Very relaxing, very beautiful, very special destination. Pool area is lovely or just steps to the beach. The staff provided excellent service, made the experience all the more memorable. An exquisite plate of fresh sliced melon and pineapple and mango started each morning, then a walk on the beach, return to a chaise lounge by the pool, swim and then another walk. The open air restaurant and bar was wonderful. They arranged for our pick up at SJO and we taxied very conveniently straight to and from the resort. Would recommend this secret destination to experienced travelers, as well as first time visitors to CR. It was fantastic!

Room Tip: The ocean view rooms with king sized bed was the best.

If you can find your room, you'll agree it's gorgeous. Decoration is great, the restaurant staff is slow but incredibly helpful and nice.
Pretty pool area.
Definitely need to improve signage to make it easier to find your room.

We travelled from San Jose to Clandestino where we stayed for 3 nights. Interbus Online is a shuttle service which picks you up at your hotel in San Jose and drops you off at Parrita ( fare is $47 per person). Takes about three hours. From Parrita it is a short taxi ride to Clandestino for 14 U.S.

We arrived at sunset on a saturday night to find that there was a wedding being held at the resort. The wedding pictures had just been taken, guests were getting their drinks, DJs were playing great music, and appertisers were being passed around by the waiters. While we were busy checking in, the owner of the resort, Diane, apologized for not informing us about the wedding. However, she did check with the family of the bride and we were invited to join in the festivities - free drinks and food!!! It was a great party and we were in bed by 10:00 pm. The party went on till 2:00 am but we had a great sleep.

We were in room 13 which has a king size bed, comfortable chairs and desk and can be best described as five star! Fabulous bathroom with a great rain shower. Just outside the room is a sitting area with 'swing' chairs and white, sheer curtains which give you plenty of privacy.

Great swimming pool with warm water and a small waterfall. The beach is only a few step away where one can walk for miles. The resort has a restaurant and bar. Breakfast is served each morning and is open all day for lunch and dinner. Many people from the neighbourhood come to eat there and the food was excellent. Entrees were priced from $10-15 U.S. Nathan and Edward, two young men, working in the restaurant always provided excellent service with a smile.

A great place to relax for a few days!

Room Tip: We loved room 13.
