“The very best of Sri Lankan hospitality”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

The setting of Sri Gemunu is wonderful, as testified in many reviews, but it is the genuine hospitality of the resort that makes this such a gem and an experience to be savoured. We stayed a week at the resort and, like others who booked extended stays, the experience and enjoyment grew the longer we stayed. This is a wonderful, family run resort with lovely, competent staff, from reception, the restaurant to the groundsmen...we loved them all. A delightful addition was the gem collection and jewellery manufacture on site. I bought a lovely sapphire as a memento, beautifully set to my design, at a very fair price. Nothing was too much trouble, from day trip arrangements to local tuk tuks and a visit to an outstanding batik maker. Thank you one and all at Sri Gemunu. May your business prosper!

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms are airconditioned and have wonderful sea views

We stayed at Sri Genumu for nearly a fortnight. As it was our first visit to Sri Lanka, we were highly dependent on TA reviews. After a very sceptical survey of the reviews, we reckoned the majority were accurate. We duly booked and had our booking confirmed by e-mail with a follow-up e-mail asking if we wanted a taxi booked to collect us from Colombo Airport, which we duly booked. After a non-stop 10 hour flight it was reassuring to meet our driver and be driven to Sri Gemunu. It was a journey of just over two hours, one hour of which was spent driving from the airport to the start of the expressway. However we missed a trick by not booking the return trip to the airport ourselves using one of the taxi firms in Unawatuna, which would have been some 2,000 rupees cheaper than the taxi booked by the hotel.
The hotel is well maintained and, internally and externally, kept spick and span.
Our room was in the main block with A/C. It was well furnished, complete with a mini bar fridge and the hot water was solar heated. If you are in the habit of being up at sunrise, then do not expect much in the way of hot water, but it does not take much for the sun to heat the water. The bathroom had a wet room shower, a wash hand basin and loo, all clean and with no mildew.
The bed was very comfortable and the A/C, at the lowest fan setting, was silent. It took less than five minutes for the effect of the A/C to make itself felt. All the rooms in the main block have private balconies, although rooms 3, 4, 5 and 6 have solid balcony wall as opposed to balustrades for the others, which, when you are sitting on the very comfortable rattan sun longer chairs, means the view is slightly limited.
Our room was very well cleaned and a few tips of 40/50 rupees ensured everything was well looked after.
The hotel has a very secure double key safe box room for which there is no extra charge.
The dining area looks out across the open space, complete with a bhoodi tree, to the sea some 20 yards away. The food was good and the buffet breakfasts and buffet dinners were hot, fresh and delicious. Unfortunately whilst we were there it was the changeover from low season to high season rates, which meant for the last few days there were only a few guests in the hotel. This was good news and bad news. The good news was that we were all looked after extremely well by the staff, the bad news was that there was no breakfast or dinner buffet. Breakfasts were good, fresh fruit, papaya juice, eggs as ordered, toast and tea of coffee. However we had the choice of virtually every thing on the a la carte menu for dinner, except for the really expensive dishes such as lobster for which you paid half the menu price.
All the local drinks were reasonably priced with a pot of coffee and a 632 ml bottle of Lion Beer costing some 300 rupees each. All drinks ordered were duly logged and when I checked our drinks bill it was absolutely accurate. However I think I should have kept a note of drinks ordered, but I had no dispute with the bill. We settled our bill with a pre-paid debit card and our unspent rupees.
The hotel backs onto the main Galle / Matara road and the single track railway line. After the first night we just did not notice the horns of the trains, buses and other traffic. If you are likely to be affected by traffic noise then bedrooms 1 and 3 have an extra door inside which isolates the bedroom from the bathroom and is there to act as soundproofing against traffic noise.
There are ample sunloungers and about 200 yards along the beach to the left of the hotel is an area of sea protected by a reef which provides an area for safe swimming and paddling.
In the sea just in front of the hotel are some half dozen stilts, which are used by local fishermen in the morning and evening. They seemed to catch a worthwhile catch every day, but I had no success at all having taken my telescopic fishing rod with me.
Unawatuna is about one kilometre to the west of Sri Gemunu and a fair tuk-tuk fare is 100 rupees. However some 150 yards to the left of the hotel exit is a bus stop and the buses are frequent with the fare to Unawatuna being 10 rupees and 30 rupees to Galle. The bus fare to Matara (35 km)is about 55 rupees or 90 rupees in the express buses.
Unawatuna has no ATMs and the nearest and most convenient ATMs are about three kilometres to the east for the hotel at Koggala, a few yards from the entrance to the Koggala Free Trade Area (an industrial estate) at the side of the road.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Sri Gemunu. It was comfortable, very clean, well positioned by the sea and transport, the food was excellent and you really should try the tuna salad in a papaya boat as one of the outstanding salads I enjoyed during the holiday. The owners and staff went out of their way to look after us well and, overall, it was an excellent hotel for a very relaxing holiday.

Room Tip: Rooms 3,4, 5, and 6 have solid balcony walls and not balustrades which means the view whilst sitting...

My partner and I both love Sri Gemunu. We have stayed here twice now and both times have found the staff to be so friendly and welcoming. The scenery from the balconies is amazing and Sri Gemunu offers a relaxing and friendly environment to spend your days. I also got some jewellery made and was very happy with the result! Cannot wait to get back here! This is my happy place.

Last October 20th we went to Unawatuna to have our project team outing with 19 head count to Sri Gemunu Beach Resort.

Actually this is very very good place and we were able to gain a lot of fun at that place.. I would like to thank Ms. Padmini, who took the responsibility of our team and treated us in the best way more than we requested to fit our Budget.

Also welcome drink, food quality (Buffet) and Evening Snack is excellent....

I think that is a very very very good place to have events like team outing or your private trips ..etc. if you are looking a place in Unawatuna to get services, this is the best place. I'm 100% sure you will be able to gain services more than you thinking for the very reasonable cost....

Best Best Best Place.....

Thanks,
Dasan.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay in Sri Gemunu. We had a nice room with balcony facing the ocean. The hotel has a nice garden
Breakfast and dinner were very good and the staff was friendly and attentive. Sri Gemunu is not very far from Gall and Gall is easy to reach by tuktuk

Room Tip: The higher floor has a beatiful view on the ocean

The welcome we received was fantastic. We booked six nights in the hotel and they gave us a super room at the top of the hotel. All the rooms face the sea and you have about 20 steps to the beach! At around £45 per night this place is the best value for money hotel we have ever stayed in. How this place isn't in Lonely Planet is crazy!

The room was really clean and the large beds with framed mosquito net were a welcome change from the guesthouses and B and Bs we had stayed in previously. There is also a fridge in every room. The A/C is very efficient and helped us to keep cool away from the 35 degree sun every day! The TV signal was a little dodgy but I could still watch the cricket with a Lion beer in the room. The balcony was beautiful and the view of the sea was gorgeous. The bathrooms are roomy.

The beach is beautiful. I can't believe people complain about the sea. It is the sea,you can't change it! BUT, Sri Gemumu is located in a very quiet part of Unawatuna away from the ever popular bay area. The lagoon in the sea is absolutely perfect! the waves hit the reef and create this unbelievable swimming pool in the sea. There is still a slight current in the lagoon that you need to be aware of if you have children.

The sunsets here are also very beautiful and we were lucky in that the stilt fishermen were outside the hotel everyday!

On to the staff. The owners are very friendly and are regularly on site to make sure all is going well. The reception staff are polite friendly and helpful. The cleaning staff loved talking about cricket with us and they were quick to ask whether you wanted your room cleaning. I loved this aspect because on some days we just wanted our room leaving alone. The catering staff were incredibly friendly and there are a lot of them buzzing around ready to help you. If you like gems (we don't) then there is a shop with a very attentive and persistent specialist, Mr Gamini. He also loves his cricket and knows his stuff about Gems.

The food - Brilliant! We even splashed out on lobster one night. The breakfast is good and make sure you order the Sri Lankan breakfast at least one day in advance. We had a buffet 2 of the nights and the food was wide ranging and very good.

The pool and chalets. Make sure you visit the chalets and pool at somepoint in your stay. It is a 10 minute walk away from the hotel and the gardens are beautiful. The pool was like swimming in a bath it was that warm!

The treatments. We had a full body massage and it was definitely needed after our busy travels. I recommend them to you.

Don't let the tuk tuks rip you off. Haggle a cheap price or don't get in it! If you need a bank use Habbaraduwa, not Galle. It is a smaller, nearer town.

I was also very impressed with the checkout process. All our daily receipts were given to us for checking.

I think the taxi to Colombo was over priced at 9,500 rupees but they vary hugely when you book through the hotels.

Overall, this place is absolute paradise! There is no in-season! Go whenever and just take your time to relax in a great value hotel in an unbelievable location!

Room Tip: All rooms face the sea! Top floor is probably the best views. We had room 7 on the corner and was pe...

Myself and my husband stayed for 5 nights in August. After a few hectic weeks of touring, we loved the beach and, apart from a few strolls into the village and a trip one morning into Galle, we had everything we needed. Our complements to the staff - especially in the restaurant. If I were to change anything, I'd probably reconsider booking half board. We enjoyed eating in the restaurant but would have liked to sample some others in the village - I hadn't expected to see so many. I'd recommend this hotel and would stay there again should we ever be lucky enough to return to Sri Lanka
