“A dream location, truly a gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2011

Sri lank is a beautiful island, and from arrival to the end of our holiday, the staff at the hotel ensured that our stay was both enjoyable and with a comfort level that belies the cost for half board. The rooms were comfortable and well serviced. A friendly family run hotel, including personal organisation of trips, The location has a separate beach, with a lagoon that offer safe swimming, alongside an area that suits surfers. The sunbeds are available, and, gardener kindly put them along the beach for us every day. Snorkelling does offer some colourful fish, but, if you are serious, you need to go to other areas, which the hotel organises. There were only a couple of english folk, and, everyone was friendly, but, not intrusive. The food was excellent - the breakfast with fresh fruit/juice and english (inc bacon if desired), was high quality, and able to be enjoyed looking over the area where stick fisherman kept us entertained. We are two mature ladies, and we have travelled extensively, often in 5* hotels; in terms of value for money, this venue is a little gem. The only downside is the journey to and from the airport, which is very long and on busy, windy roads, but, if you can cope with that, it is well worth the trip. if you are looking for the most relaxing and idyllic location, this ticks all the boxes. You may want to visit the 'bongo bar' along the main beach area; they offer the most delicious fresh fruit coctails; one with a surprise! If you are prepared to organise your own holiday to Sri Lanka, the rewards are well worth it, and, money well spent.

I stayed at Sri Gemunu with my husband and two children, aged 6 and 8. We were welcomed by one of the owners with a lovely fruit cocktail and looked after fantastically from that point on.

We arrived with our guide, Rasika, who was with us for the week. Unfortunately I hadn't told the hotel, but they let him stay in the Guide accommodation all week. The food was lovely and the staff very pleasant and helpful.

The beach, right outside the hotel, was lovely and the children could play in the shallow waters protected by the coral reef. We did have to be careful about the undercurrents on the right hand side of the bay, but if we stayed to the left it was fine. There's a lovely little hotel just along the beach which does fantastic food with lots of fresh fish and amazing pizzas too.

I would definately recommend Sri Gemunu as it's great value for money. The only slight issue we had was the pool being a short drive away but luckily the beach made up for it.

Room Tip: We had the interconnecting rooms on the second floor for 2 adults and 2 children, aged 6 and 8. I w...

Upon our stay @ this lovely "resort" which seems to be used very loosely in Sri Lanka, the staff are very friendly and eager to please. Although they hardly speak english, which I believe should be part of the dynamic!

We begin our stay with the halfboard breakfast which is a choice of eggs (any way you like 'em) and some fruit juice which I happily passed over to my partner. The selection is limited and if you're used to the lined buffet breakfast this isn't it. Staying with food @ Sri Gemunu it is below par - from snacks, dinner to lunch nothing is satisfying. However, going down to umawatuna beach, you can have a 10 time better fish plate that you should avoid at the resort.

The rooms are small, the cleanliness questionable and the ants always on the loose. I preferred cleaning the room myself although nothing I did can take the stench of something really gone wrong in there.

The beach at the resort offers nothing special, on the contrary you are better off frequenting the beach in Umawatuna and visiting our friend at the "Yellow" hangout, you get a free chair if you have a beer, we went all out on those Lions!

We met three of the owners at the resort one of which insisted we visit his safire workshop and "buy" something, on an hourly basis or whenever he caught a glimpse of us. Afterall, we did seem to have wads of cash in our pockets burning to be spent there... NOT

The younger owner was very helpful trying to rectify most of the issues once I mentioned them but I think other places can accommodate until the issues are resolved. Do not upgrade to cable tv, or wifi, and separate balcony because none exist except perhaps the dangling railing called the separator.

Overall, nice people, great surrounding, but really hope they upgrade at some point. But for money spent, it's just ok.... nothing wow!

We stayed at Sri Gemunu over the weekend and fell in love with the place. I am American, and my husband is Sri Lankan. After living in Sri Lanka for more than 5 years, and travelling all over, I can truly say that Sri Gemunu has the best hospitality. The hotel is situated on a very quiet stretch of beach just south of Unawatuna. When we arrived at the hotel we were very concerned because the sea was rough! We were traveling with our two little boys, and were very happy to see that just a short stroll down the beach was an area protected by a shelf and offshore corals. The swimming was always safe there. The staff at the hotel was just lovely, and they spoiled our boys rotten! The hotel has a nice little garden, and if you go inland, they have an Ayurveda center with a little swimming pool. The rooms were basic, but immaculately clean. We were also surprised to find very high-quality fittings in the bathroom. And, oh the food! It was fantastic! They do simple food very, very well. The dinner buffets had a nice selection to suit all tastes. I saw on the second night that they were serving french onion soup. I was a bit skeptical, as I am very fussy about it being done right, but it was lovely. All in all, just a very special place with people who seem to genuinely love to be in the hospitality business.

Second trip to Sri Gemunu and just as welcoming. Nice peaceful place within easy reach of the hustle and bustle of Galle. Friendly welcome from extended family. Good quality food from evening buffet. Would recommend to anyone travelling down the west coast of Sri Lanka.

We stayed in Sri Gemunu hotel for a week. All rooms have view to the beach.

The rooms and facilities are in good condition, clean and very well maintained.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. The owner has a jewelry shop in the hotel with very good prices and nice designs.

We were on HB basis and enjoyed excellent dinners in the restaurant.

In my opinion, the only downside of the hotel is that the beach in front of it is rocky and doesn't fit for swimming, a nice lagoon suitable for swimming is about 300 meters from the hotel.

We were interested in scuba diving and were referred to a great diving club about 3 min. driving from the hotel.

Sri Gemunu is an excellent choice for a quiet beach resort in the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
