“Cozy and close to Unawatuna Beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

Thambapanni Retreat is a well-constructed hotel. The interior is very pretty with an attractive pool, open restaurant, and rooms that appear hidden behind foliage. It's closer toward the end of Unawatuna Beach which means that there is a lot of activity along the main road that leads there, but it manages to be a very peaceful property that isn't too quiet or loud.

Pros: We were warmly greeted and check-in was easy and quick. The security guards were especially helpful in guiding us to the parking garage with our vehicle which was a bit bigger than the average Sri Lankan SUV. The hotel has its own restaurant, and there are also several bars and other restaurants nearby. Our room was lovely - the king bed was in a four-poster style and had sheer netting all around, but didn't look tacky. The room was big and comfortable enough for two people spending a night. The bathroom was clean, modern and with a rain shower and a tub. The hotel is a short tuk-tuk ride from the center of Galle. *Don't pay more than 400 rupees into town.

Cons: The hotel and our room were almost perfect. But for realizing a few inconveniences, I would have rated 5 stars. Despite the room and bed looking really nice, we realized that the sheets were stained very badly. We returned to the hotel somewhat late after dinner, so we didn't bother alerting the staff. The sheets appeared clean, but as regular travelers, we are very particular about the cleanliness of anywhere that we stay. Also, the curtains on the windows are very sheer. While it didn't appear that anyone would be close enough to see into our windows, having curtains that weren't sheer would have provided better peace of mind. The window on the bathroom door is also quite large, so having a curtain on that would have been great as we each value our individual privacy.

Overall: Our stay in Galle and at Thambapanni remains a great memory for us. If we're ever in the area again, we'll consider staying at Thambapanni because it definitely looks to be one of the better hotels in the area.

I just want to say frankly , this place is really awesome. So friendly staff and always willing to help . Clean rooms and a beautiful swimming pool is very attractive. The hotel manager is always so positive and polite . He's just very friendly with clients and gives so much instructions.I stayed two days with my girlfriend , then I moved to another place because of my early bookings. I just want to recommender this hotel for people who are looking for relaxation staying.Congratulations, guys, keep it up.

Room Tip: Tower suits is suitable for romantic couple

We were surprised when we saw the rooms, they were so nicely decorated. The room was decorated by Sri Lankan traditional decors, paintings and furniture. Exciting architectural plan, there was a natural rock in our room which was nicely designed. Of course to enhance the architectural structure with ever green environment. The room was well equipped with Satellite TV, Telephone, AC/Fan, Mini bar facility, Tea coffee making facility, safety locker and comfortable sofa. Our room was spacious. The attached bathroom was with both bath tub and shower with hot and cold water.
I already booked my holiday for 2015 before I left, really looking forward to return!!!

The hotel is located in Unawatuna with 500m away from the famous beach. If you are looking for a beach relaxation and also a quiet relaxing atmosphere where its hard to find by the beach since its busy with the road or music played in restaurants Thambapanni is the ideal place.

A peaceful environment with a swimming pool and sun beds, open area chairs, with free wifi so we were able to do work while being on holiday. In the evening we saw some visitors coming to Thambapanni, they were the “ Monkeys” sometimes they surprise us when they go crossing our sight when we were sitting in the balcony.
Practically we found this as the best place for mind and body relaxation.

Location was great, far enough from the beach so the doof doof from the beach parties was a faint sound in the background, but close enough to walk.

The hotel itslef looks a bit dated, bit still nice. We stayed at room 14 which was right outside the pool, so great for the kids :) and the staff were warm and welcoming.

Only bit was the overselling to the point of dishonesty about the variety of seafood at the restaurant being better than that outside, and breakfast a bit of a let down compared with what we've had in sri lanka hotels.

But definately my kids enjoyed themselves, and from what we've experienced so far in Sri Lanka, really good value for what you pay.

We have just returned from a 4 day stay at the Thambapanni Retreat in Unawatuna. Chose it because they offer twice daily yoga but were delighted with the charm and tranquility of the place, very helpful staff, and overall eco-friendly atmosphere....and just a few minutes pleasant stroll to the lovely beach. A big plus is that you can use the facilities at a sister hotel right on the seafront. We stayed in a very comfortable room on the fourth floor (there are 6 levels) ...totally secluded and felt like being in a tree house, especially when monkeys appeared in the evening! Thanks to everyone at the Thambapanni who made our stay so memorable.

Room Tip: 3rd or 4th level...5th or 6th if you are fit and prepared to walk up

We found the Thambapanni Retreat Restaurant to be the best place all kinds of food from traditional Sri Lankan, vegan, oriental or continental. But the best thing was you can ask them something , out of the menu which they will prepare if possible. What we had during our stay of five nights the foods were delicious. We had Sri Lankan breakfast three days out of five and you can order the previous night. Rice and curry are excellent too. You can dine in by the pool deck if you like, of course they will do it for you. One night we had a romantic candle light dinners with guitar music. They also have special fresh seafood like snapper or butter fish, and from tiger prawn to king prawns, lobster, crabs etc.) were freshly prepared for us according to our preference. Can request to prepare as you wish. It doesn’t matter either you are vegetarian or not. You can get your food as you want. Good fresh fruits. If you need organic food can let them know previous day. Highly recommend.
