“Colonial charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2012

If you want to get away from standardised comfort and impersonal design, try Strand Home Stay. I have stayed there numerous times in the past (and will be going back in a couple of weeks. Sometimes with the family, sometimes alone, it has always met my expectations. The house is full of charm and history (as its host), and the large garden gives a relaxed feeling. Each room is different in style, so make sure you pick one that suits your personal taste. They're all well described on their website.
Although the rooms provide a comfortable stay, don't expect ultramodern design and impeccable functioning of all amenities. Those little disturbances come with age, and the house has plenty of age. But Asoka will make sure that, if anything malfunctions, it's fixed fast.
Of course, there's better, and there's worse. But nothing in Unawatuna can compete with the charm of a real homestay. You become part of the family.
Want to surprise Asoka on your arrival? Try to find a recording of Elvis Presley he doesn't have yet. I tried, but failed. His collection can compete with any serious Elvis Presley museum in the US.
Thanks, Asoka. Staying with you has always been fun.
Alfonso

Its nice to get back to the green green grass of home on my vacs from the sandy deserts where I am now.

Unawatuna and Strand had always been one of my favorite stop overs. It is a nice place to unwind and relax.

Olde world colonial charm still retained in this house makes it special among all the new places there.

being just a hop and step from the beach and the lively restaurants in very convenient.

Monkeys, birds and the Turtles are Unawatuna;s specialties.

Every room is different and good value.

Room Tip: Suites are large and very comfortable

"Strand" is an unique and a special place for me. Amongst the new buildings, it stands tall with it's grand olden structure. It's very quiet and peaceful place as it's few yards away from the busy beach. Unawatuna beach is outstanding out of the golden sand beaches of Sri Lanka. Rooms were clean, spacious and comfortable. The owner himself is a very helpful and friendly person. The 3 day stay at Strand has a special place in my memory.

Room Tip: Spacious and comfortable rooms. Furthest rooms form the road are quieter.

My Wife and I have stayed here early this year [and a few years ago before Tsunami] and the time went so fast that we thought we have to leave our home. very close to a beutiful [safe] sea and well away from bright city ligts but yet close enough. With free Internet provided what else one wants on holiday!

After checking out nearly every hotel in Unawatuna I finally stumbled on this fabulous place. Its set back off the dusty main track in its own tranquil garden and although only a stone throw from the beach it feels completely removed from the "hustle and bustle" of Unuawtuna. There are about 6 rooms all of which are completely individual and absolutly full of character. The rooms at the front of the house have aircon and are finished to a slightly higher standard but all of the rooms are beautiful. We stayed at the back of the house in the garden room. It was on two floors with a veranda on each. Upstairs we had a four poster double bed and downstairs was another double bed with a fridge so this room would be perfect for a family or two couples. It was so peaceful sitting on the verandas overlooking the tropical garden, listening to the birds and watching the monkeys that visited occassionally enough not to be annoying. Even though the beach is only a stone throw away its so tranquil and relaxing in the grounds of the Strand that we found it difficult to leave, I felt more relaxed here than I had all holiday. We ate breakfast in the hotel every morning and suggested to the owners that we'd like to try the Sri Lankan breakfast. Every morning we were greeted by a different Sri lankan delicacy that was fit for a king and a perfect way to start a day of relaxing. The owners were so friendly, full of local knowledge (ask them about Duran Duran!!!), and couldn't be more helpful anticipating our every need (mosquito coils, candles , tea we didn't even have to ask). If this place were in Europe it would be classed a a boutique hotel and would probably cost a fortune but the Strand is cheaper than most of the places I looked at in Unawatuna and has oddles more character. I feel really privilidged to have found this special place and would love to come back. I would highly recommend the Strand to anyone who goes in search of somewhere slightly different, appreciates rustic charm and character. Thankyou Asoka and Hilda for a fabulous stay you were wonderful hosts and have a very special place we will be back! Lucy and Iain (Cardiff)

This is a charming place with an equally charming host, great location for the beach and restaurants of Unawatuna, and good value. The rooms are clean and comfortable although be aware that some rooms don't have hot water (not really a problem in such a warm climate, believe me!).

Really lovely setting in a quiet garden which makes you feel far away from the hustle and bustle of Unawatuna. We stayed in a two floor place furthest away from the road. It was lovely and spacious but not spotless. One night there were worms in the shower which is not the end of the world but I dislike worms. Really great balcony looking over the gardens and somewhere to sit downstairs as well. The fan was in a bit of an inconvenient place not quite over the bed so it got very hot and we had to move the bed. The owner is a very nice gentleman who is friendly and helpful. The best thing is definitely the lovely peaceful garden!
