“Believe the bad reviews on here!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2014

We had been traveling around Sri Lanka for a while and were looking forward to the Comaran as a little bit of luxury. Unfortunately, this was not to be the case. When we arrived, none of the staff were particularly interested in speaking to us. We had booked through booking.com and I honestly believe that they had double booked our room. After some hushed conversations, we were taken all the way through the hotel and out the back, round by the pool where a few rooms were in a separate block. We had booked a deluxe double with a private balcony, what we were offered was the following:
A double room with one window that looked out directly on to a wall
A feature wall that consisted entirely of mould
A dirty and dusty (not even a surface wipe?! Really??) bedroom and bathroom
Bathroom amenities (which were supposed to be included) that consisted of 2 sachets of Sunsilk shampoo which I am guessing came free from the previous guests magazine
(Also, the professional pictures have been photo-shopped like crazy, do not have the high expectations they encourage)

Needless to say, we did not stay here. We were told there were no rooms available and that we would need to stay for 1 night in the disgusting room and then they would move us. This was not something we wanted to do and like the previous reviews on here (oh how I wish we had listened!) we had to fight our corner in a big way to get our money back. Not only did they not seem to care that they had not given us what we had paid for, they also did not seem to care that the room was actually disgusting. The manager refused to come and look at it with me as I suspect he knew how embarrassed he should be. They would not let us call anyone from booking.com and made us argue our point for over an hour. Once we had eventually spoken to Booking.com and they had spoken to the manager, we were free to go and not a penny lighter. After all of this, the manager then told me that he could sort something out for us, that he had a lovely little room that we could have on his best floor. We were told so many lies by the manager, I couldn't even list them all, please do not ruin your holiday by visiting this place.

We loved staying here. The staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. The breakfast spread was plenty and delicious. We were a big group, all vegetarians and we all loved the food. They put us in villas in the back. The spot was very quiet and yet connected with the main hotel. Location is great. Right across the street are cool diving centers. And all restaurants are in walking distance including Jina's and South Ceylon, both great vegetarian restaurants. The staff also helped us with excursions and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, provides us tons of extra towels, sheets etc.

We were staying at Comran Beach Hotel from 24th August 2013 until 26th August 2013 (checked out in the morning). I must put this whole episode online so that no other traveler has to ever go through this experience.

Firstly as promised on the website Wi Fi is NOT available in the common areas of the hotel. It is only available in the reception area of the hotel. When this was notified to the manager he stated that the restaurant on the floor above was not a common area and hence Wi fi would not be available. He was least bothered to sort out our problem and was very rude and not willing to listen at all.

The TV in the room we were staying (sea facing room on the top floor) gave a message that "no reception due to non payment of bills" when we called the reception to inform regarding this they said they would look into the matter and there was no further action from their end to resolve this problem.

On request for fresh towels the following day, these were not provided to us. When we asked the manager he apologized stating that they were short staff. This was absolutely not acceptable.

At the time of check out when all these issues were again brought up to the manager he very rudely stated that these are all problems out of his control and he can do nothing about all these things. If that is the case then why is he the manager at all if he cannot resolve guests queries.

Finally an argument developed between the manager and all of us to which he raised his hands on us including the ladies. There was also a bald guy with a mustache who was supposed to be the so called Restaurant manager who lifted the chair to hit the ladies. However he was stopped by his own staff.

We were not allowed to leave the hotel and we demanded that they called the Police. However this was also not done. Finally after a long wait of almost 4 hours we were allowed to go after being held prisoners in that hotel.

Please note that this is an absolute true story and the reason for me putting this up is so that no other person has to ever go through this ever. Not even anyone's worst enemy deserves this kind of treatment.

The manager only acts like he is there to solve the problem but in reality does nothing. He is only sweet on the face and is capable of nothing. Before he allowed us to go the bald guy (restaurant manager) was apologetic about the incident and stated that he was under tremendous pressure and hence he made the mistake.

I would say that any guest going to this hotel is at risk of bad service and a high possibility of being held as prisoners all over again. I would not recommend this hotel to any one.

The breakfast is delicious

The rooms are really big with AC

The views are awesome

Just 10 minutes away from restaurants and pubs at the beach, crossing the main road.

People very friendly

The downside: You have to ask specificly to have your room cleaned....

Well, I was lil apprehensive about booking in this hotel after reading average reviews on agoda and other website. When, I reached there, I was offered a complimentary drink with a water bottle..The room I got was pool facing and it looked pretty from room,,Room was dot clean and overall at that price it was a great room...Specially when breakfast was also free with the room....I liked the hotel and shall recommend it to others considering that other side hotels were charging double than this hotel..Just 2 mins walk from the beach add icing on the cake...They even let me stay 2 hours extra than check-out time....
