“Mediocre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2014

Overpriced and mediocre . Unawatuna is really lacking good quality well priced food and this is one of the many " restauraunts " that serves to tourists only . Pity they didnt focus on improving their standards .

“Rice and Curry was good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014 via mobile

I had a very good rice and curry dinner on the beach. The chicken was tender and spices pleasant. Service was as expected.
English is a second language to many service staff and accents vary so I make a point of pointing to my order on the menu. Having just recently traveled with someone with a hearty Scottish accent, I have some sympathy. Backing up your order by pointing to the item just makes things easier for everyone.
I liked the open kitchen which appeared clean.
In general, since Sri Lankan restaurants prepare a lot of food from scratch, or have a very small kitchen, I expect to wait 20 or 30 minutes for a meal. We have thought that it would be good if they provided a small item, like bread and butter or some fruit to tide people over while the dinner is cooked.

“Don't waste your time, go next door to the Thaproban!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

Very impressive looking restaurant right on the beach front with superb views out over the ocean, but there is a reason why this place sits comparatively empty when next door at the Thaproban resort the place is busy with people and has a lively atmosphere.

The fresh fish here is literally twice the price than at the Thaproban, for example a single meal of whole red snapper plus jumbo pawn would have cost approx 8000 rupees whereas two whole red snappers, two jumbo prawns and a couple of beers was less than 4000 rupees at the Thaproban. The "fresh" fish at the Cormaran also looked liked it had been taken from a freezer and did not look fresh at all. We tried to haggle with the staff to lower the price but they weren't budging an inch - make it an easy decision for us to simply head next door.

Don't be caught out.

“ARE THERE 9 WORSE PLACES THAN THIS IN TOWN???????”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2014

We arrived at Kingfisher Hotel to find them fully booked. We walked into the Cormaran to find it strangely empty when all other beach restuarants were bustling - I should have reacted to this - and I should have read Tripadvisor because other reviews are spot on. First half of the starters weren't available then the waiter tried to persuade us not to have a chicken dish which would take too long to make. The food came cold and was bland but there is good news because the chefs, the waiters and the 'manager' all got to watch the cricket on the giant screen which ruined the ambience of a beach side meal. This place need Gorgon Ramsey to come which a machine gun! Oh did I mention it is also expensive, and finally the acid test, because no one asked if everything was ok ( they never do in terrible places) I sought out the manager and asked him why no waiters anywhere else on the beach had time to watch cricket.

“Incompetent and slow service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2014

We have never managed to get any food so cannot comment on that, vut the service was really terrible. We popped in for a coffee, drink and desert. Waiter did not even know what was on the menu. Even though we told him the drinks we want from drink menu, he brought food menu to double check what we ordered. Then we waited for 30 min and not even a single drink came. Waiter said we need to wait more, and after another 10 he was blasted and we left the restaurant. Unfortunately for us the evenning was spoiled, especially that the place was quite nice and seemed to be good.
