“Unique, Surprising and wonderful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2012 for a stay in March 2012

We stayed at the Penthouse on the rocks in Unawatuna for 2 weeks in March and what a wonderful place it is. We had the large Penthouse at the top and it was just perfect. From the moment we arrived Tony (the owner of the property) made us so welcome and gave good advice and help throughout our holiday - but without being intrusive. The place itself is adorable with the most stunning views from every room. Just sitting on the huge veranda with a gin and tonic or a cold beer and a good book was lovely, and watching the most colourful birds and the monkeys was a real treat. The rooms are simply furnished but very comfortable and are serviced by a couple of local lad's every day and if you require Padme will even supply breakfast. There are quite a few steps up to the property so anyone with mobility problems would struggle, but it is worth the effort because of the place and the view. There is even more of a spectacular view from the lookout post right at the top which is only accessible from the large penthouse.
The resort is typical Sri Lanka - very friendly, a bit rough around the edges but with a lovely beach and nice inexpensive cafe's and restaurants. Jungle beach is small but very pretty and it is an interesting (quite long) walk to get to it. I would recommend the Koola Koola Bhar which is a veggie place run by a couple of British brothers, the food is wonderful and the people are very friendly - the wine is good too! we also loved the Pink Elephant, the people there are really friendly and please make sure you try the specials and the Happy Spice for real authentic Sri Lankan curries. We took our life in our hands a few times and hired a moped - not for the feint hearted but good fun. We traveled up to Marisa, which has a stunning beach and some lovely restaurants, we also stopped off at a few resorts leading up to Marisa which were all lovely.
I really cannot recommend the Penthouse on the Rocks enough, we always stay in 4/5* hotels but this was much better - we had the freedom and privacy that you don't usually get in a hotel and we loved it...................go, you will not regret it!

Liked best: The veranda was just the best - and Tony was delightful.
Liked least: The steps could be an issue for some people with mobility issues, older people would be okay so long as they are fit and don't mind steps.

“An absolute heaven on earth!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2012 for a stay in February 2012

From the moment we arrived, we were all blown over by the stunning beauty of the house, the overwhelming warmth and friendliness of Tony and his staff, and the sheer ‘Wow!’ factor of this delightful resort.

By far one of the most imaginative, unique and tastefully furnished houses we have ever had the privilege of staying in, we were immediately inspired by the high quality design and meticulous finish to this spectacular ‘gem on the rocks’. Cleaned daily, the rooms
were kept meticulously spotless, and upon arrival, there were even a few small (and very gratefully received) surprises in our fridge, courtesy of Tony! The panoramic views across the bay, from our very spacious balcony, just took our breath away. Although quite high up, we were only a couple of minutes walk from a beautiful beach and quaint resort, that had so much to offer – for all ages.

Overlooking a fabulously maintained garden, we thoroughly enjoyed our mornings on the balcony, overlooking a glistening sea, and watching the colourful birds and cheeky monkeys playing in the trees. Sunrise from this amazing house was positively breathtaking.

Tony was charming and a first class host, making us feel very special, from the minute we arrived. He couldn’t do enough to help us, in getting to know the best places to eat and shop. He even introduced us to the locals and we felt very much at home. In fact, the whole staff were an absolute pleasure to meet, and made sure we had all that we needed.
After our relatively short stay, we felt we had known Tony all our lives, such was the warmth and friendliness of this great guy!

Needless to say, we are already making plans to return to this truly spectacular place next year, and we highly recommend this ‘heaven on earth’!

“Exceptional Apartments in a serene environment”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2012 for a stay in February 2012

We stayed in two apartments here, one for myself and my husband and one for our two children (11 & 13). Both were imaginitively designed (making great use of the local materials and rocks on which the house is situated), both had a stunning high quality finish and were spotlessly clean and comfortably furnished. We all felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to stay somewhere so inspiring and unique while being located so conveniently for all else Unawatuna has to offer.

Tony, the owner, was a wonderful host who welcomed us warmly and then very kindly showed us around Unawatuna and recommended good restaurants and shops as well as making sure we had all we needed for a great (and far too short) stay.

“home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2012 for a stay in January 2012

my husband and i stayed at penthouse on the rocks for three lovely weeks. the house is stunning (by far the most beautiful in unawatuna) and the room is spotless and tastefully decorated in local style. we enjoyed breakfast every morning on our veranda overlooking the lush garden and watching the wildlife with the indian ocean as the backdrop. the house and its view are so beautiful, we wish we could call penthouse on the rocks home.

tony, the owner, is a superb person and a terrific host. he went above and beyond in every way to make our stay in sri lanka one of our most memorable. tony showed us all the best restaurants on the beach, introduced us to the locals and made is feel completely at home. tony's charisma and charm make you feel like you've known him your whole life. the whole staff at penthouse on the rocks were a pleasure to get to know. don't forget to ask for padma's breakfast! it's the best on the beach and you can enjoy it from your own tropical veranda.

we hope to return to sri lanka in the future and when we do, we will look no further than penthouse on the rocks as our idyllic home away from home.

“Beautiful Place!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2011 for a stay in October 2011

We had a fantastic and relaxing holiday at Penthouse on the Rocks. Set in the hills and a few minutes from the Unawatuna beach, this place was a truly remarkable find.

The place is one of a kind, from the small alleys leading to the Penthouse, to the steps leading up to every apartment. Surrounded by breathtaking views, the Penthouse itself is incredible, made completely from local and natural materials like stone and corals.

The Penthouse is meticulously maintained and the apartments are roomy and unique with its rock walls. Each apartment has a nice spacious balcony with spectacular views.

Tony the owner is an incredibly gracious host. Right from the first phone call made to enquire about this place, Tony went out of his way to make things simpler for us. He can provide a variety of information and his recommendations of some of the local restaurants were spot on. He even provided us an extremely healthy but yummy breakfast. Though he repeatedly said he doesn’t do it for everyone :)

It is a short walk to the beach and lots of other day trips can be made using Tuk-Tuks. We loved our stay at the Penthouse on the Rocks and will definitely be going back for another visit.

“Stunning Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011 for a stay in December 2010

We had a truly lovely, chilled out holiday at Penthouse on the Rocks. Set back in the hills above the main strip of Unawatuna, we were mere minutes from the beach but also had the luxury of being in a unique, beautiful space away from the crowds. The Penthouse itself is amazing – made from local, natural materials, and designed and built by a local Stone Mason, the building is an art piece in itself.

Being an architect and generally more impressed by clear straight lines and an emphasis on less is more, I was impressed. And that is quite something!

The view of the Indian Ocean from its expansive veranda is particularly spectacular and the photos don’t do the penthouse and the view any justice! There is a big shell-like bathtub in the main bathroom that is accessed via a little bridge…the bathroom itself is the size of my lounge room at home! For an even more spectacular view there is a little ‘Rapunzel-Tower’ via a steep set of stairs accessible from the penthouse only.

We loved having our morning coffee overlooking the glistening sea and experiencing the joy of the early morning monkey parade across the roof! The locals and also Tony, the owner/manager of the complex and a great guy, were all delightfully friendly and very helpful.

The penthouse was meticulously cleaned on a daily basis and Tony even left little surprises in the fridge for us, or Padma, one of the locals made some Sri Lankan special tastes.

We stayed for almost four weeks and did a few daytrips to places around the area and found it very hard to leave. We can only highly recommend the place and wish to come back one day.

“Like a dream!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2011 for a stay in August 2011

The best place in Unawatuna: design, creativity, relax and a very kind and lovely owner (Tony). We loved it!
All the room are fantastic: rocks and wood everywhere mixed in a real stylish way.
We were at the first floor and every evening a monkey family used to come under our terrasse to spend the night!
Moreover, Wonderful view directly from the bed through the large windows.
Tony, the owner, provides with every kind of information, stories and suggestions: he's great!
I hope to have a chance to go back!
