“Overall something special by the Indian Ocean”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012

Although I only spent the day there I have to say it was something special.
If it isnt Relaxing & swimming by/in the rough but yet soothing sea it's then on their cool sun beds/pool with a cocktail in your hand.
As for Cantaloupe Aqua, it's a Grand 'Boutique' Design of a Hotel with modern cool refreshing vibrant looks. Food wise, either I was lucky or their food is great as I loved the Sri Lanka curry that I had, spicy how I love it.
In overall it's a stop that everyone should do if they visit the south of island.

Not being used to such critical reviews in my previous reviews, this one might be suprisingly negative...it does however reflect my honest opinion and experience...

Booked this hotel for 5 nights after 9 days enjoying sri lanka and its' great nature, sightseeings and people.....it was a cold shower...

On the photos of the hotel side it looks impressive..however the reality is totally the opposite with the sole exception of the views and location (beach and sea view).

The following observations that made this a very disappointing experience:

* cleaness - every day we received new towels...unfortunately, most of them were simply dirty...very dirty!

* hotel rooms - the furniture is dirty - the sofa's are far from the original colour white... * swimming pool - not worth mentioning..the size is maximum 3* 4 metres.

* music - at around 9 o'clock you will be waken up by the bass beat of the music in the restaurant below

* bathroom - measuring 2* 2 metres, black spots all over the wals and after each shower you have floodings covering the floors. On top of that, we were waken up at 6.30 in the morning with a explosion in our room...the watertubes were expoded....this caused an enormous ravage and water flooding all over our room and the hallway... 30 minutes later it was solved and cleaned but never received any apoligy or explanation...they didn't seem very upset about it.

I have seen soo many hotels in sri lanka. This is by far the biggest disappointment of all of them...especially if you evaluate them on the price-quality ... My recommendation would be to take any other hotel in the region...there are many very nice, luxury hotel from which we heard very nice comments ...and even at much lower rates!!

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip: Definitely worth visiting the city galle (fort) and have a walk in the village of unawatuna!

We were so excited about dining here, the logo is cool and funky, the menu looked awesome, the location is good so we were gutted when it turned out to be so, so bad.
We ordered Three Cheese Garlic Bread which when it arrived was three slices of bread with three types of cheese, one on each, but one was a slice of processed Happy Cow cheese! So bad its funny! The others were blue cheese and one indescribable cheese. We tried so hard to get the waiters attention to order drinks that in the end we went to the back bar, ordered and brought it back to our table because if we didnt they just wouldnt make the drinks! We wondered if the staff arent very happy and maybe thats why the service is so bad.

Nice modern style hotel near Unawatuna. Amazing beach, amazing pool and amazing beach beds. The rooms are really nice and so near to the sea that is like is singing a lullaby in the night for you. But... the room I got had a lot of problems: not closing the door of the bathroom, the bathtub was leaking and making a lake after the showers. The jacuzzi in the room was not really cleaned at our arrival and it was a bit ruined so we didn't use it. Breakfast is good, ok for transportation (you can find huge amount of tuk tuk just in front of the hotel) and the staff is nice and welcoming. Comparing with the quality of other places this one surely get a high score, but the price for what you really get, especially in off season is maybe a too much high.

When one thinks Unawatuna, the only thing that comes to mind is the fact that it has nothing but the best beach in the Island. Well guess what Unawatuna now has Cantaloupe Aqua!
I visited Aqua on work and had the pleasure of experiencing world class hospitality. Starting from the Gatekeeper to the Directors of this establishment. These guys work as a unit and without a shadow of a doubt Aqua will reach great heights in the industry.
From the time I entered Aqua everyone was so helpful I felt that the pampering started at the gate. A perfect pineapple juice was served and in no time I was in the room looking out of the window at the beautiful sunset. The rooms are very modernized with the flat screen TVs, Ambient lighting and other facilities. The restaurant staff is super friendly and willing to assist no matter what time of day it is. Chef Nandana puts together some of the best fusion dishes I have ever experienced....A must try is the Coconut rotti with three dips. Also the "Gothamba Rotti with Gotukola Salsa" is a hit. The Melon Martini is the perfect finisher as you come out of the pool and just before you move on to the hard stuff :-)
Trying the Thai meals at the Coconut restaurant is also a must while you are at Aqua...After all with a talented Executive Chef like Nandana who is always willing to even demonstrate how the meals are put together, nothing can go wrong...
The deserts are so good you are tempted not to stop after one...
The best however is the Sri Lankan Lunch and the Breakfast which is very reasonable priced and plenty in portion.
The rooms are cleaned thoroughly by yet again extremely supportive maintenance staff who look into every single detail and concern mentioned by the guest.
The best part however is the staff never makes you feel like a guest..its like they make you feel like you are a part of the hotel and a member of the Aqua family.
The infinity pool adds a lot of value to the hotel too....tho its quite small compared to other pools its more than enough to relax and gaze into the sunset or the ocean and forget everything else...After all we dont go on vacation to train for the Olympics...so who needs a large pool?
I was extremely sad the day I was checking out, I felt as if I was leaving home. I asked if I could stay longer than the check out time and I was upset when I was told that there was a check in due in a couple of hours so the room had to be released....guess what...They did one better by UPGRADING me to a suite for the rest of my stay....What more can you ask for to call it a fantastic weekend.
The tiny improvements that are in the process of being rectified by the management can all be overlooked when you are treated fabulously by the great friends working at Aqua.
Once you check in you dont feel like heading out...its that fantastic
I had a great stay and more than what I expected...Thank you Cataloupe Aqua for the fond memories

This is a small, stylish and modern hotel but at the same time very friendly and welcoming. The infinity pool is smallish but with the sea only 1m from the front of the hotel it doesn't matter at all. The rooms are clean and well equipped with rain showers in the bathrooms. The beds are very comfortable. Due to the ac being mended in our deluxe room when we arrived we were upgraded for 2 of our 4 nights to a suite with its own jacuzzi and panoramic views. If you can afford the extra cost of this room then there's nothing quite like sitting in a jacuzzi and looking out over the breaking waves of the Indian ocean!! Our children had a standard room and for our remaining 2 nights we had a deluxe room, both with a sea view and highly recommended. The is an open sided restaurant off the side of decking with sun loungers and sofas which is next to a sandy area with sun beds and you can walk down a couple steps straight onto the beach. The restaurant is lovely with a contemporary feel and delicious food with a range of Sri lankan and western foods. There is a choice of 3 semi-set breakfasts with something for everyone which are all delicious. The location is 6km out of unawatuna however this offers seclusion and adds to the attraction with no issues in terms of going into unawatuna both in the day and at night as you can get a tuk tuk from straight outside the hotel very easily. Last but not least the staff are exceptional, the manager is first class and all staff are delightful, friendly and very helpful! There are also various massage and facial treatments on offer which are of excellent value compared to the uk and for a treat on your holidays are definitely recommended!! We love it and will definitely come back in the future should we visit Sri lanka again!!

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely but given the option we'd recommend requesting a sea view.

AQUA cuisine just like aqua is inspired! Our inspiration created a menu, which is a combination of Thai Fusion, Japanese, Western and Sri Lankan. From fresh seafood platters with tamarind sauce to Prime Imported Steaks COCONUT will provide you with an exquisite culinary experience. The restaurant area is a veranda, which opens out to the Jacuzzi area. The theme is euro chic with white taking prominence with feature art adding color and character."Dine where the action is infinity poolside, beach side, indoors, outdoors, under the stars, on a deck or on the beach!" AQUA offers you numerous options and spaces to wine, dine, lounge, party or just chill! Nandana, Cantaloupe AQUA's Executive Chef, who has recently returned after completing a culinary course at the world famous, Blue Elephant Cooking School, is always busily preparing some delectable dish for the Coconut Restaurant guests. Nandana's food philosophy and culinary style is extremely simple but never fails to impress, any one of his dishes will have sentiments from at least two nations of the world. Fusion is his greatest skill. When describing his technique, the characteristically shy Chef, becomes vividly animated by his passion. His guests are constantly in an exciting state of anticipation, awaiting the next surprise Nandana will turnout. He prides himself in stocking the kitchen with the finest and freshest local produce and ingredients. His latest culinary conquest is Coconut's new Tapas Menu, which he has painstakingly crafted to weave in elements of Sri Lanka's tantilising flavors. He also just finalized the Thai-Fusion menu and it has already racked up rave reviews. The dining experience Cantaloupe AQUA plate up is easily one of the best in the south! 'Due to unforeseeable circumstances, Cantaloupe Aqua being primarily a beach front property has encountered difficulties providing guests with direct beach access in front of the property depending on the time of year and the seasonal weather changes. Due to man made structures built into the sea on the coastal line and global warming, which has caused inconsistent patterns of sand deposits. Sea erosion has caused Aqua to lose it's beach during some months of the year. In the event the beach is inaccessible our front desk staff will be more than happy to offer you complimentary transport to the closest beach on the right hand side of the property, which is also accessible by a 10 minute walk' - Management ... more   less
