“Wish I was still there.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2012

We just returned from four nights in the Cultural Triangle followed by four nights on the beach at Dallawella. Despite the mixed TA reviews, we chose to give them a try. <Good Call> It was a busy week and the nearby competitors were going to cost considerably more $$. Dallawella has only 8 rooms and we were hoping for some quiet beach time. The location feels remote, but the sights are easily accesible. Every morning you can view the stilt fisherman, and it's a nice stretch of semi private beach to walk or run. Dalawella is not a luxury accommodation. but it is smartly appointed, has powerful A/C, good size fridge, and not only was it CLEAN, there was always a fragrant cinnamon smell. They gave us Ritz Carlton service at a great rate. Kumada ( Sorry for spelling?) introduced himself and attended to us for the duration. He rented us motor scooters, provided maps, directions, answered questions, and gave honest advice about the area. Coffee was brought to our room promptly, and he happily honored meal requests at off hours. Laundry came back the same day, and one very large souvenir we were worried about packing was boxed up and ready for transport while we were off sight seeing. He was by far the best room/building attendant we have had to date. His interactions were non intrusive but his experience and intuition with hospitality make it a "return to" destination for us. There are more pictures of rooms and views posted on Agoda, and they ARE exactly what we saw!!!!

Room Tip: We inquired about an upgrade to the Cabana, but it has no A/C. Truthfully we enjoyed a second floor...

Just spent 3 days at this beach hotel. It's main great asset is the location - literally set on a stunning clean quiet beach. No noisy music - just the sound of the waves crashing on the shore - bliss. We ate at the hotel on every evening of our stay and the food was simple but edible - I recommend the most delicious tomato soup I have ever tasted. The chef and "manager" were attentive.
On the down side the room was small as was the bathroom and shower and not entirely clean. Beware the sachets of shampoo (they contain black hair dye) !!
The bedroom was cramped and the kettle didnt work. The WiFi was dodgy and meant I had to take the tiny router to my room.
On our last morning over breakfast all the staff seemed to be concerned we might "do a runner" and hovered until we settled the entire food and drinks bill. Credit cards could not be taked as "the phone line was down" !! At one point the "manager" followed us into our room to advise us of that day's exchange rate !! We finally agreed a price - food etc in Sri Lankan Rupees and the car pick up from Colombo ($100) in GB pounds. For most of our stay we were the only guests.
BUT watch out for the airport pick up driver. Mad Max !! This was a journey from hell - highly dangerous and quite frankly he should never be allowed behind the wheel of a car again. Not for the feint hearted.
Despite all of that - the location was fantastic.

We just returned from a 3 night stay at Dalawella. We stayed in the beach cabana they have which is set round the corner from the main part of the hotel and we loved it. It's obviously very basic (it's a beach cabana!) but there's a big four poster bed and the bathroom was massive. What we loved most is that we got to have breakfast and chill out on our own porch.

Dalawella is not on Unawatuna beach, it's in a smaller cove down the beach. The sea right outside the hotel is very rough and rocky; makes for an amazing view but not for swimming. We wandered down the beach and over some rocks and found a lovely natural pool in the sea which we used instead. The beach was very quiet (probably because it's almost Monsoon so end of the season).

Unawatuna beach is a very short tuk-tuk ride away but looking back we'd probably stay on Unawatuna itself next time as flagging one down in the dark on the main road wasn't always fun. The owner recommended we walk a 'short distance' to another hotel to cut onto the beach and then walk down, however we'd definitely not recommend trying it after our experience - cars and buses FLY down the road. It wasn't pleasant.

The food on the whole was average; breakfast was lovely (recommend the Sri Lankan omlette) however the other food we had there was well below average (undercooked chicken...).

Our only other slight complaints were the fan in the cabana was definitely not working properly; very loud and barely making any difference to the temperature and also, despite being asked not to, the staff insisted on sweeping the grounds (and in particular the area right next to the cabana at 5am). Loudly.

Overall we had a lovely time. We enjoyed being cut off for a few days and loved the sound of the ocean at night.

The Dalawella is not flash or elegant, but it offers clean and pleasant accommodation with the advantage of being right on the beach. The rooms are quite plain but have really high ceilings and air-con which really helps in this climate. You could probably take your own towels as the ones provided are small & very thin ! The outside area has shady palms and a couple of loungers, the dining area is again quite simple but adequate. Breakfast is fruit juice, eggs and toast with tea or coffee. This seemed fair as the cost of staying here is very reasonable. In the evening you have to go along a fairly unattractive road to find restaurants - nothing in the way of nightlife. Best thing is the staff - they are really welcoming & helpful, eager to make you feel comfortable.

Room Tip: There are only seven ! All seem to have a balcony and face the beach rather than the road. All are w...

I arrived and the bathroom had not been cleaned. The staff makes up for most shortcomings, however. My sheets also had dirt marks on them but those were promptly replaced just as the bathroom had been promptly cleaned. The room was not cleaned once during my 4 nights there. I didn't mind but they did not even offer. When I needed toilet paper or new towels I just requested it.

I really enjoyed that the beach was quiet compared with spots just down the way where swimming is done. I was a bit disappointed/surprised that the only fish option they had was tuna steak given the amount of fishing done in the area. When I asked if it was possible to have a whole fish for dinner the mgr said it would cost something like 1500 rupees. I thought this was ridiculously expensive because fish are everywhere. The meals were a bit expensive for what I was given but, overall, the food was decent. After the 4th night I decided to dine elsewhere which was a good idea.

I was surprised at how big the waves were but it was incredibly relaxing and beautiful. To me, I did not find snorkeling enjoyable even in the designated swim areas, there wasn't much to look at and the water was still strong coming into shore. There was a constant breeze which was wonderful.

What makes this hotel special is the staff.

This place was great. Wonderful big rooms with MASSIVE beds. The courtyard is really pretty-- just walking into the place takes your breath away.
Staff very helpful and friendly.
Only problem is it's about a 20 minute walk to the main beach where all the restaurants/bars etc are. Good if you want to be away from it all but wouldn't advise if you wanted to be amongst the action.
We really enjoyed staying here and had a wonderful times.

We were a group of 10 people from Sweden staying here for 5 nights. The hotel is small, not luxury but sufficient for our needs which means spending much time on the beach and trips to Galle. The food was very good incl breakfast with fresch juice, fruits, eggs - you could actually ask for almost everything. The best of it all was the very friendly and service-minded staff and the spirit of "family".
