“so glad we stayed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

We loved Palm Grove! Very clean rooms and the friendliest, most helpful hosts. We were concerned at first about staying in a place off the beach, but left Unawatuna very grateful for Palm Grove because it was so quiet and relaxing. Paul and Lorraine helped us find the stick fisherman farther south down the coast. They gave us tips on the cheapest places to eat because food is ridiculously expensive. I really liked the honesty fridge on the second floor with water, beer and soda. They always had it fully stocked. Perhaps the best part of our stay was breakfast in the morning in the open, breezy lounge area on the second floor. We loved the fruit, toast and coffee and talking with other travellers or the house boy. No question we would stay again if we return to Unawatuna.

This is another glowing review of Palm Grove. The guest house is simply lovely, with beautiful plants and a selection of seating areas. Beer, soda, and water are easily accessible, and it is a great place to relax and enjoy the tropical ambiance. Our room was spotless, and the bed very comfortable. It is a short walk to the main drag of the town and to the beach. I really wanted to stay longer! The hosts were great, and provided tips when needed. One suggestion of theirs was - for good traditional rice and curry visit One Love restaurant. Totally agreed - it was really tasty. Palm Grove is truly a special guest house in a special place.

We booked this guesthouse after reading Trip Advisor and were pleased that we had directions from the owners otherwise we'd never have found it. It's tucked away down a narrow pedestrian lane off beach road, just a short walk from the shops, restaurants and wonderful beach. Our hosts Lorraine and Paul were two of the warmest, friendliest people we met on our travels in Sri Lanka and they made us feel so relaxed and welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable, containing 2 four poster beds with mosquito netting and a large en suite wet room with plenty of hot water. There was a cool, leafy seating area with table immediately outside our door. As well as this, there are also two terraces where guests can eat breakfast or relax with a pot of tea, and there's a fridge with an honesty payment system so you can help yourself to an ice cold drink at any time. Evening meals aren't provided but one of the closest of the many restaurants in Unawatuna is the Hotel Flower Garden where they serve excellent food (we can highly recommend the sirloin steak). We intended staying for 3 days at Palm Villa but this turned into 10 days as we liked it so much. One word of warning however, be wary if you have any dealings with nearby Meedum Villa Guesthouse or Sun Tours as we were mis-sold at both places.

Myself and two friends arrived at the Palmgrove for a weeks stay for the England Cricket Match in galle. We all found it a great place to stay, with a really welcoming feel. From the friendliness of everyone (paul, lorraine and the staff team were great!) to the high standard, and cleanliness, of the accomodation and rest areas to the great breakfasts which were served on the terrace each day - it was superb!.

There are 4 rooms which gives it a real personal feel to your visit and by the end of the week we felt more like a friend visiting rather than just another visitor to a guest house. Its a great location for some amazing little restaurants, bars and of course the beach.

Will definitely be returning next time the cricket is in Sri Lanka, but i fell in love with the area so much i will hopefully be visiting before then and i will definitely be staying at the Palm Grove!

Thanks for making it such a great stay!

Late in posting this. Got distracted by house decorating on return from holiday. What a lovely time we had at Palm Grove. It was only a short stay but we felt so at home with Lorraine and Paul. Very friendly and attentive, but not intrusive. We were invited to a dinner on our first night which was being held as a farewell to another guest returning home to Moscow. The meal was lovely but much to my embarassment I spilt wine on Lorraines beautiful table cloth. She was so gracious about it and the couple were such superb hosts. Even though we spent such a short time we felt sad on leaving. If we had not already arranged onward accomodation we would have stayed longer. We met such interesting people and made friends chatting by google translator. Really recommend Palm Grove.

We stayed in March 2012, eight days at the Palm Grove. Can only recommend the place.
Friendly and helpful hosts, Lorraine and Paul.
The house is well maintained. clean and tidy. Especially the roof terrace is fantastic.
Breakfast is a reasonable "basic". (Coffee / Tea + fruit, the rest must be bought separately).
There is a short distance to the beach, 5 min. time.
The room was fine, good bed with mosquito netting. A / C without problems.
Beer and soft drinks can be purchased on site.

(Kaffe/The + frugt, resten skal tilkøbes).
Der er kort afstand til stranden, 5 min. gang.
Værelset var fint, god seng med myggenet. A/C uden problemer.
Øl og vand kan købes på stedet.
Kan arrangere afhentning i lufthavnen.
Fuld valuta for pengene !

I don’t normally write reviews, but I wanted to do so because this place was absolutely fantastic and left us wanting to stay longer if only we had the time to.

We were originally debating between a beach front accommodation or somewhere further inland, and we were so glad we chose the latter. Palm Grove is located a few minutes walk from the beach and set within a lush, quaint garden, complete with a little pond with fishes and surrounded by rainforest and fruit trees. This meant that it was so idyllic and peaceful being away from the main tourist strip were there is the occasional disco.

We were taken aback on first impression by how lovely the place was. The guesthouse is owned by a lovely English couple (Paul and Lorraine) who immediately welcomed us and showed us around the place. Palm Grove has two beautiful terrace areas (one on the first floor and one on top) for guests to enjoy. The rooms were exceptional and a cut above having been around Sri Lanka and stayed in various places. The rooms had a boutique feel being of modern décor with quirky furnishings such a bamboo framed mirrors and driftwood tables. They had tall ceilings, fan, A/C, hot water, and a four poster bed complete with mosquito netting.

Paul and Lorraine have thought of every little detail to make our stay as enjoyable as possible, from the provision of a little torch for walking around at night, a telescope if you liked stars, hammocks for chilling, ipod docks for our own music and a fully stocked fridge were guests can help themselves to drinks and then mark on an “honesty board” to keep track of what they have taken. We noted that drinks prices were very reasonable: slightly more than if you went to a supermarket, but significantly less than if you went somewhere on the beach front. Also, the place has a night watch called Gianty who is very friendly and comes in the afternoon, locks the gates once all the guests have returned from their evenings and stays on site until about 4am so we felt very safe being there.

We had breakfast on the terrace in the mornings which consisted of toasts, butter, jams, fresh fruits and tea or coffee. As the terraces overlooked the gardens, it was so tranquil except for the occassional monkeys, peacocks in the trees (who knew they could fly!) and loads of different birds of paradise chirping away.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay hence I felt an urge to write my first ever Trip Advisor review. I especially enjoyed most of all the hospitality of the hosts; a lovely couple that we enjoyed chatting to. They were extremely accommodating, mindful of our space when required and having been in Sri Lanka for a while, had a wealth of recommendations to help us plan our onward travels.

Stayed for 4 nights in February 2012, traveled as a couple.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the first floor .... if only to be closer to the terrace area and drinks fridge
