“Comfortable and relaxing in a beautiful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2010

Stayed here for just a few nights last year and felt that I was in luck to chose such a gorgeous guest house to stay in for a few days. The rooms were very clean and simply decorated with timber and white linen I recall, my room opened out on to a balcony which over looked the Indian ocean.

I only ate breakfast at the hotel, but I recall it was very good. Staff were courteous and friendly.

Have recommended this place to many and will continue to do so. If ever I return to Unawatuna I would stay again.

We stayed here for four nights and wish it might have been for longer.
Every moment felt like a honey moon!
The staff were friendly and attentive and genuinely interested in us as people. The manager was very good, he spoke to every resident each day to ensure that everything was alright.
Our room was comfortable, with new air conditioning installed and there was plenty of hot water at all times.
The food was very good and therefore we chose to eat there for most meals.
We had a lovely stay and will definitely be returning another year.

A lovely, small hotel right by the sea. The staff are extremely friendly. A special thanks to Priyantha and Nalinda for making my birthday so special. Rooms are spacious and very clean. The food is amazing! I highly recommend the Sri-Lankan breakfast.
The only thing to critisize is the billing. We were able to pay in USD via credit card online in advance. At the hotel itself this was not possible. Payment by credit card is then only possible in Rupees and at the hotel exchange rate, which is quite unfavourable for the guests!!! This fact is not conveyed to the guests in advance, so check when paying your bills!

This is a clean, friendly, relaxed and attractive hotel with a great location. I've stayed in standard, deluxe and superior rooms. The standard room I would avoid as relatively dark and small. Also the aircon was old and not really working. The ceiling fan sounded like an airliner taking off. The deluxe and superior rooms were much larger, excellent a/c and fans, mini bar, balcony with sea view and altogether far better. The only difference between deluxe and superior is fluffy bathrobes and a knock on your door in the evening to put flowers on your bed, so save your $20 and go for the deluxe.

Service was excellent all the time. The staff are uber friendly, though sometimes slightly pushy about eating there every night. Having said that, the food is also high quality, frequently including freshly caught seafood of every description and cooked to order. You can even pick your own. Good wine selection too.

I would certainly stay here again. It's a far cry from the many budget/backpacker joints on the beach, but with a very fair mid-range price tab.

Free wifi in the reception area

My husband and I have just returned from 15 days at the Thaproban and have had an amazing time. All staff were the nicest people we have met during extensive travel. The food, accomodation and situation were all excellent. While in Unawatuna we met up with our son who was moored in the Port and he and the crew were welcomed by all the staff. Organisation of trips was efficient and airport transfer trouble free.
My husband visited the retreat for treatment and was impressed with the service. Definitely proved a good decision to book here.
The best lobster thermidor ever!!

We spent 4 night at the Thaproban beach house and really enjoyed our stay. The hotel is right on the beach, the staff is very friendly and the hotel is very clean. A special thank you to Sehan, the manager who is treating all the clients like VIPs and also to Samatha the chef who cooks anything you like and I can say that his cuury is the best I've ever had.
If you stay at the Thaproban beach house, you can also enjoy the swimming pool and the Ayurvedic massage at the Thambapanni Retreat which is their upper class hotel only 10 minutes walk. Thambapanni is also a wonderful place in the middle of a tropical garden, very quiet and relaxing. We will definitly go back to this little piece of paradise.

We had our original holiday plans were wrecked the week before we were due to leave so we ended up in Sri Lanka by pure good luck. Before arriving in Unawatuna we had spent time exploring the historic north and we were ready to chill out.

Unawatuna and Thaproban delivered everything we were looking for, the location is great, right on the beach, but the best thing was the way we were looked after. Everyone from the restuarant, the bar, the cleaners, everyone was so incredibly friendly and couldn't do enough for you.
