“Beautiful surroundings however overpriced, poor service and poor food.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

I spent 4 days and 3 nights with my wife and in-laws. For the price paid, this experience was a disappointment! If all the hotels in Galle and Unawatuna weren't fully booked, I would have left the hotel after the first night. There is a clear issue with the general management of the hotel, as there seems to be no structure or training for the staff. The hotel performs like a average 3 star resort, rather than the 4/5 star it gives the impression of.

Positives:

- Beautiful location
- Restaurant has a stunning view
- Nice swimming pool
- Decent SPA
- Clean rooms, good clean surroundings
- Good Access to 2 beaches, one on East side and one on West.
- Stunning sunsets and sunrises
- Rooms are nice and well furnished.

Negatives:

- Food quality was poor during breakfast and dinner, in fact in some cases inedible.
- Definitely not a 4 or 5 star place, more like a average 3 star.
- Overpriced
- Service was awful
- Waited for over hour to be served lunch
- Waited over 1.5 hours for room service
- Food and Beverage department seemed completely unorganized, had no structure and spoke very poor English (lucky I could speak Sri Lankan, otherwise the things would be worse).
- Hotel room bathrooms in need of refurb... Very poor quality including no hot water in sink.

Room Tip: 1. If you are staying at this resort I would strongly recommend you request a room on the upper floo...

The food is very bad really bad, breakfast, lunch and dinner in one word dredfull.
The cottages are fairly clean only the bathroom is just dirty and has an urgent need for renovation. If you are looking for luxury and comfort do not go to this resort the money they ask is nowhere near the expectation. The stars they have is not true, for westere concepts I give it not more than 2 stars.
Older reviews were good, however there is a new owner hence the reseonn for decline I would say.

Room Tip: Although all rooms have seaview, if you still wanne go here ask for newest rooms available.

Our group of four stopped here one night and quickly regretted it. They charged us USD450 for a "Family Room" including dinner and breakfast and, as we were tired and it was getting late, we made the big mistake of not asking to see the room first. They wanted payment upfront and it soon became apparent why.

The room was horrible. The stairs to the upper beds were ridiculously steep and very dangerous. The mosquito nets over the beds had huge holes ripped in them. The switch for the fan was hidden behind one of the beds, but the fan was broken anyway, so it was noisy air conditioner all night. The bar fridge was a joke; dirty, empty with the freezer so iced-up you couldn't use it anyway. The TV was so old it should be either in a museum or a tip. Bath towels were old and stained. They advertise free WiFi, but it's only available in certain common areas and certainly not in the rooms.

Then there was the food. Without doubt the worst food we encountered during our 2 weeks in Sri Lanka. Bland curries, over-cooked tasteless meat & fish dishes, sad desserts. Breakfast was equally off-putting. They can't even manage to serve decent hoppers (which in Sri Lanka is criminal). One of our group ate Coco Pops for the first time in 20 years, as it seemed the only palatable choice. Remember, this is a hotel with the audacity to charge $450 USD.

They have a wood-fired pizza oven, so before leaving the next day we thought we'd give the food one last try. Silly us. What arrived at the table were slabs of uncooked dough with a vomitus pile of congealed topping. We didn't eat them and refused to pay.

The only reason this place can continue to exist is it's perfect location on a peninsula between two beautiful unspoilt and quite empty beaches. The boys you encounter on the front line; the room boys, the waiters, the guards, are charming and willing to help, but the management is unfriendly and arrogant.

So don't be tempted, as there are much better options in the area.

We stayed here as a family of four (parents and 2 adult children) December 2-10, 2012. The hotel is very welcoming, staff is very nice and helpful, nothing bothered us, nothing was confusing or strange. This place is not for partying but if you want to relax and spend a few days with your beloved ones, this is an amazing place.
1. Most of the time there were no loud and stupid behaving Russians (or mostly they were away partying:))
2. The food is delicious, I suggest having HB, as it was quite enough, and we didn't even need lunch.
3. Everything is very clean.
4. Scenery is gorgeous, the hotel is isolated from the locals if you are bothered by extra attention but at the same time, you just walk about 200m and you are welcome to experience the amazing local flavor and culture!
5. There's wi-fi by the reception (which is also working in the rooms close to reception, so consider this! ;-) ) and by the pool. So, don't expect wi-fi everywhere but it's there and if you can't stay without civilization, you'll have it.
6. It was not a problem for me but for my parents it was very difficult to get from the airport to the hotel and back (it took about 6 hours on the bus, and it rarely had bathroom stops which is challenging for seniors).
7. Don't expect a lot of animation activities. They had yoga, water aerobics, disco which was fine by us, I didn't care about it but if you want it, consider these factors.
8. All rooms are very spacious and have a WORKING A/C which was great. Another thing, I don't know if it's important for you but the light in the room is very dim, there's no main lamp, just the table lamp by the bed.

Overall, a great relaxing place to rest after a long day of exploring the surrounding cities, temples and other interesting sites.

I stayed there for 2 days with my family and friends from 28th Sep to 30th Sep 2012 at room 7,8,9. We had a excellent week end. Staff is superb, always smiling, ready to make us comfortable. Beaches are awesome. Lot of clear sea and silky sand. We spent great time on the beach with the kids, it is superb at night when moon is there.
New management is doing lot to further improve the condition. GM of the resort ,Mirsha is a man with lot of common sense. One excellent thing they do is that 'room service' is done twice to make sure rooms are sand-free ( obviously we brought lot of sand when we return from those beaches). So rooms are kept nice and clean all the time.
we found a nice natural pool at the sea ,which is made by the 100 meter long reef at the right side of the resort. Beautiful fish could be seen if you are with your pair of goggles.Kids loved it so did not want to return.
Definitely I will visit again.

Considering the predominantly bad reviews on trip advisor for this hotel, the promise of unspoilt beaches trumped the bad reviews and we booked a 2 night stay here. The hotel is located in one of the most beautiful places along the South Coast, crystal clear water and pale white sand welcomed us. We had a lovely sea front room with all mod cons and our bathroom although dated (really who cares?) was very well maintained.

The highlight of the hotel is the beach - crystal clear water, lots of privacy and space for guests to enjoy themselves on the beach. We spent all of our time in the sea, and not in the salt water pool which lacked space, shade and chlorine! The little snack bar that is above the water sports centre is a good alternative to the buffets in the main restaurant as well.

Some things that could use improvement is the food, it was a classic case of alot of dishes that weren't prepared well or tasted good. Even the Sri Lankan food could use alot of improvement. Coffee and tea was at a self service table with no hot water or fresh milk at breakfast - this was very disappointing. However the wait staff are very helpful and full of smiles, and the main restaurant is surrounded by a balcony that overlooks the reef.

Despite the below standard food we would most definitely return simply for the one of kind sea swims that i so fondly remember!

The reason I stayed over at the Dickwella Resort and Spa was so I could get a head start in the morning and make a two-dive boat trip to new dive sites. We arrived quite late so couldn't see much of the hotel that night. The dinner buffet was average, but with a wide spread. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was nice and large, with an antique-looking four-poster bed, with netting all around. Bathroom could do with a bit of modernization.

At breakfast we got our first good look at the restaurant, which overlooks some amazing naturally formed rock pools, with the waves breaking over the reef just a bit past them. Would certainly recommend having breakfast on the balcony of this restaurant, you will be able to spot various fish as well as an occasional water snake in the pools below.

It was my first experience with the dive centre at the resort and while I will definitely recommend the dive sites (one shipwreck and some shallow coral gardens) here and the dive master as a skilful person, the boat badly needs an awning, unless you enjoy getting severely sun burnt!

Lunch was interspersed with various seafood dishes, including my favourite - shrimp. You'll find something that suits your palette. However, the desserts were simply mediocre. Hence I shall rate my stay at this hotel as average.
