I stayed at MRL with my boyfriend in May 2013 - we wanted to do something special as it was his first trip to Uganda and it did not disappoint.
The location is stunning - Nile views and sounds (including hippos!) from every angle. Vervet monkeys (and hippos!) visit the campsite and there are many birds to be seen.

We stayed in a sarfari tent which was right next to the river, flanked by trees which provided shade to sit in when we had some safari-free time. The tent was spotless, right down to the mosquito net. I always find mosquito nets a problem, often even in really nice lodges and hotels, because they're invariably very dusty and never cleaned - not so at MRL where they were pristine; this was only one of the many examples of a clearly carefully thought out attention to detail.

Other features that stood out from the norm were the wash basins made from pretty pebbles (a theme echoed in the paths and landmarks) and the brightly coloured cushions and hammock which help to make the bar area so relaxing and homely.

The food was fabulous - three course meals with a vegetarian option every night (NOT the norm!)and cooked breakfast available every morning - accentuated by a view of sunset or sunrise over the Nile as you eat. Packed lunches are available for day trips and these were very convenient.

The pool was especially welcome after hot dusty days and its view of the Nile only adds to the refreshing atmosphere. A member of staff was always quick to notice we were there and offer us drinks.

Perhaps the best thing about MRL is the staff - without exception they were friendly, good humoured and very helpful - nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to makes guests feel like more than paying customers. There is clearly a sense of pride in the place and a genuine zest for customer service among everyone who works there.

I would not hesitate to recommend this lodge to my friends as excellent value and an overall exceptional experience. We were there for three nights but could have happily stayed double that at least. We will be back!

What I liked most about this place (apart from the marvelous Nile views, the tentative staff, and the simple and safe food options!) was the varied accommodations that cater for all budgets. Safari in Uganda is more expensive that other countries in East Africa and what this country needs (and I am starting to see) is varied options just like this one.

I visited Murchison River Lodge in November 2013 with my family. Its not a fancy lodge with over the top services (that are very hard to execute in such environments) and it totally meets your expectations.

The location is second to none in the region. You can enjoy all of your meals and hang out in the bar/lounge (there is even a hammock) and see and listen to the wild sounds of the Nile banks - splendid.

The lazy tents are a great idea. Lets face it, people don't want to lug tents (particularly wet ones) and have to erect them and put them down all the time. A holiday is for relaxing. So those of us (most of us!) who have a budget of sorts and want more than a 3 day African safari, this is just perfect. And of course you can eat in the restaurant and drink in bar.

The linen was well laundered, the staff were tentative and friendly, the management were hands on and not barking orders.

We will definitely go back and recommend this lodge to our friends and family.

Well done and thanks!

At the end of the day overlooking the last part of the Victoria Nile before it ends in Lake Albert: what do you whish more! The central building was an relaxing place where we enjoyed the hospitality of the staff and the tasteful diner made by the chef.
After all the impressions of the boat-ride over the Victoria-Nile up to the falls it is a good place to stay. We were sorry we didn’t book this place for more nights!
But next time we will book a cottage instead of a tent. This tent was not very convenient. It was too low to move around. To reach the bathroom you had to walk in a bended position to the backside of the tent. In daytime not such a trouble, but at night, when the hypos are roaming around it could be tricky. The solar-lights didn’t work, which wasn’t helpful when one has to leave in the early morning, when it is still dark.
The always-returning dilemma about tipping was solved very well by the management: it was put in writing that individual tipping was not appreciated and was discouraged. Tipping only could be done via the tipping-box. A clear method for staff and guests!

Room Tip: Choose a cottage instead of a tent.

I was only going to stay a few nights, I happily stayed a week. MRL is the perfect antidote to the stresses of modern life, peace, quiet, perfect views and a fantastic feeling of nature all around you. I was greeted warmly on arrival by fabulous hosts Cooks and Charles and felt welcomed instantly. I was shown to my safari tent after enjoying a cold G+T and I was thrilled, so cozy, extremely comfortable bed, spotlessly clean and close to one of the best toilet/shower blocks I have seen in Africa. Practical layout and excellent quality of materials; from taps to hinges, the attention to detail is outstanding. The following morning, I awoke to some outside rustling and, from my bed, I watched a troup of vervet monkeys feasting on ants for breakfast. Spectacular! The pool is now finished so I spent a lazy morning after my full english breakfast floating around on a lilo, interspersed with reading my book in the hammock. The quiet was intoxicating. A lunch of fresh salads and home made bread was enjoyed as I watched the hippos move up and down the river, trying to spot the odd elephant. I spent 5 more days like this, and wanted nothing more. But I got fabulous sunsets, great meals, superb hospitality and a complete regeneration of my exhausted work addled self.
I would like to thank immensely the hosts, staff and owners for contributing their energy and effort into making stay so memorable and making me feel part of the family. This project has clearly been a labour of love, which started as a simple patch of earth, but you can tell every aspect has been considered to make this the perfect stay when coming to Murchison NP. I cannot wait to come back (next month) and try the new complimentary afternoon tea and attempt a new low in the scrabble league! See you soon!

We stayed 2 nights at Murchison River Lodge on 24th and 25th March this year. The location is superb with the main building containing the dining room, bar, lots of comfortable chairs, settees and a hammock on a raised piece of land overlooking the Nile. From here we could clearly see hippos and various bucks and warthogs feeding on the riverbanks. The new Manager met us at the car park and introduced himself (but we can't remember his name!). We were offered fresh juice and even though we were late the lunch buffet was replenished for us and suitably refreshed we were taken to our safari tent . This contained 2 very comfortable beds and an en suite with a portaloo which saved us the worry of trying to get to the flush toilets and run the gauntlet of strolling hippos in the middle of the night!. The atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful. We were encouraged to make use of the pool in shorts and t shirts if necessary as we hadn't brought swimwear but passed on this! The first night we had a really bad storm just as diiner was about to be served. The wind blew rain through the dining room and chairs, glasses, cutlery etc went crashing to the floor. The staff had little time to react but did their best to reduce damage to a minimum. Most of us got pretty wet and began to feel cold but the manager offered us all a glass of Amarula which restored our spirits. As the storm passed the staff quickly restored order, providing us with dry chairs and tables to sit at and a hot dinner! Our daughter camped and found the campsite facilities excellent too. Also reassuring was the presence of guards who lit lamps along the paths and outside our tent to deter wildlife and were always on hand to accompany you and protect you as you walked to and from your tent. We were very impressed with Murchison River Lodge and would not hesitate to recommend it.

Room Tip: Cottages don't have such good views. Try and get the first safari tent - number 6!

Dear LoJo54, that you for taking the time to write about your visit to the Lodge in March. We're so pleased your family had a memorable stay and that the extreme weather didn't disrupt dinner too much (although Amarula is great at warming you up!) We look forward to seeing you all again.
Best wishes, MRL

Murchison River lodge is in a very pretty setting. I stayed with a group of friends in October 2012 - half of us stayed in safari tents (simple but solar powered, basic en suite bathrooms with hot showers) and half in the cottages (big, spacious, nice & comfortable).

I think they have plans to build a swimming pool there which would be a great addition.
The location is pretty perfect - overlooking the Nile with an 180 view.

However, the biggest downside is the food. Dinners were average, just about acceptable but lunch and breakfast were pretty appalling. Buffet lunches with tasteless food, and I don't think any of us, over 3 days enjoyed breakfast - chicken sausages that tasted fizzy, undercooked eggs, raw tomatoes (literally) and all of this was incredibly late.

Huge potential as a lodge but the food is a BIG letdown.

Dear TammyAS, we are very sorry that your visit over six months ago was not to your complete satisfaction. However we are encouraged by your recent email enquiry about a return trip and hopefully this time everything will be more to your taste, including our new pool.
Best wishes, MRL
