Although Le Cannonier has all the trims one would expect from a beach resort in Mauritius: big blue pool, palm trees etc, I found it disappointing and would probably not choose to stay there again. Simply because there are better options within the same price bracket.

The interior of the room I stayed in was drab, the towels have seen better days, the curtains are not thick enough to offer privacy (I stayed in a ground floor room and one could see inside the room when the lights were on). There are other rooms that offer more privacy. If this is a requirement, request this when making a booking.

The beach is a disappointment as it is quite small and very rocky. Alot of guests go to the neighbouring public beach which is much better but an inconvenience and it can get quite crowded.

Le Cannonier does not have a gym like most of the other Beachcomber hotels. It does have a seemingly nice castle-like building for kids to play in which I am sure will be appreciated by both kids in need of entertainment and parents in need of rest & relaxation. The spa seemed perfectly fine. The latter is built in an ancient tree on the property. Wifi in the reception/ entertainment area (only) is hit and miss.

I have only had breakfast from the buffet which was ok. The resort is a short taxi ride away from restaurants and shops in Grand Baie.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with Le Cannonier. One can surely have a good time there, but I would not go back in a rush simply because I know there are better options.

Room Tip: Request a room with thick curtains or blinds if you require privacy.

Firstly, this hotel is by NO MEANS 4 star!!! it is somewhere in the range of 2-3 star. Secondly, the rooms are VERY average, nothing special, nothing extra, basic as you can get. Thirdly, the room has pretty transparent curtains and a VERY old tv. The best part of this hotel is the exterior - nice pool and outdoor restaurant with good views. Drinks are VERY expensive, so is the food. I most definitely will not be staying here again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here although we had different requirements. My son loved the water sports and had no trouble getting into everything he wanted each day. I wanted to veg out and enjoy the food and ambience. The food was excellent - we had half-board which included breakfast and dinner. We did not want to commit to lunch to leave time for excursions.

Although a little bit isolated, taxis are cheap and we went into Port Louis with a driver one day. We did a couple of short trips into Grand Baie and spent half a day at the sister resort, Le Mauricia, because we wanted to check out the gym equipment. It turned out we were the only ones there and the equipment was extensive and excellent. The food at this resort was equally good and was covered by the package we had at Le Canonnier. Although Mauricia is handier to Grand Baie, the water sports were superior at Le Canonnier and the latter had a nicer feel.

The lack of internet in the rooms was annoying but then I was supposed to be 'unplugged'. When withdrawal from the rest of the world became too much, I could go to the bar area. BTW - the best access is in the pool room, next to the model sailing boat. The wifi equipment is behind the boat.

The room was a good size and had double french doors leading to an outside area. I have never encountered such humidity. Phones and other electronic equipment would be covered in condensation when taken out of the room - but this did not seem to affect them.

Service, especially on arrival, was very poor. Once settled, the other staff were friendly and helpful. One thing I found odd was that there was no iron in the room but an open air shared ironing area

Room Tip: If you must have a gym, then factor in the cab fares to Le Mauricia. Half-board was better value fo...

Without being a five-star hotel this is a place for your dream-holiday.
We had all-inclusive when we stayed and it was awesome, lots of good food and drinks.
The friendly staff made our stay wonderful, they really cared for our wellbeing. Every morning fresh flowers and smiles met you. The rooms were always clean and decorated.
The beach is not the biggest but its good and well sheltered.
Our excursions were well planned by the hotel-staff. We left with a tear in our eyes - we had a wonderful stay!

We booked two weeks all inclusive at Le Canonnier for our honeymoon, November 2012. As you arrive, the driveway, grounds and entrance into the reception area is extremely impressive. After being given a drink and hot towel to mop down with, we were shown down a dark, dated and smelly corridor to our ‘superior room’. It was raining heavily and the damp humid air had caused the old brown carpets to sweat. The smell was dreadful!

The superior room was clean, modern and had a big double bed but overlooked the children’s playground and lacked the ‘wow’ factor that we were expecting given what we paid for our holiday. We asked for an alternative room where we were shown something identical but with a different view. Expressing our disappointment, we were offered one of the honeymoon suites but this was to cost us almost half again of what we had already paid for our holiday! The room was huge, modern and comfortable with double doors opening directly onto the beach, lovely for sitting outside with drinks from the minibar, watching amazing sunsets, we loved it. After negotiating a significant discount, we moved in but it was still very expensive and something we wouldn’t have done had it not been our honeymoon.

Despite staying in the hotel’s best room option, we were surprised that the cleaners felt the constant need to store their many cleaning trollies outside our room from about 8 in the morning until at least 4 in the afternoon. Mops and buckets, linen and empty glasses and bottles were constantly present in the corridors as it seemed to be the procedure for staff to empty these things out of peoples rooms into communal areas where they would remain until a member of staff collected them the next day. This was a real shame and certainly isn’t what we expected for a hotel of this standard.

Unlike other reviewers, we found the food to be excellent. Although there were some dishes you’d see every day, overall there was an amazing choice with many hot dishes being cooked freshly in front of you during service. The head chef very friendly and keen to please my appetite for spicy dishes and he was always keen to make recommendations to me.

Table service was sometimes a little slow during busy periods but the staff were generally very polite and helpful. The hotel has two further restaurants in addition to the buffet restaurant. The Navigator restaurant was a lovely spot with an amazing view over the beach and sea and was well worth visiting for lunch or dinner. The third restaurant was an Italian which was cordoned off the side of the buffet restaurant. Sadly service was incredibly slow and whilst nicely presented, the food wasn’t all that special. You could also arrange a romantic meal on the beach but this was prohibitively expensive, nearly £200 which was a real shame as it would have been a beautiful romantic setting.

Every evening the bar which was in a beautiful setting within the garden and pool area would provide entertainment. The cocktails weren’t as good as those made with branded spirits but the beer and wine were enjoyable and the bar staff are friendly. After the bar closed, you could buy drinks in the Navigator which also had a disco at midnight although this didn’t seem to be used by many guests.

The hotel is advertised as having wifi but it was only available in the bar and reception with variable signal strength and it wasn’t available in the hotel rooms. The pool and beach were clean, sports facilities including the water sports were excellent as was the spa which is located in a maze of rooms up an enormous tree.

To conclude, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Le Canonnier but there are some simple things that they don’t seem to have got quite right here which given what you pay and expect from a Beachcomber hotel, should not be the case.

Room Tip: Get the best one you can afford and try to select a sea view. Beware that the rooms facing East were...
