“Rich cultural experience at a great price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2013

Excellent place to get away, or to stop over while traveling around Kenya. Superb international foods, adventures in permaculture, geology, boating, exploring unusual places. Owner Linda is an artist and rich with info about the local people and their culture and how to experience it all, or you may just want to relax by Lake Victoria. Really nice experience at a super price.

I visited Wayando with my parents in what was their summer vacations and 3 weeks visit to Kenya. We loved the rural environment surrounding the Club. During the day, we sailed with the traditional colorful boat to visit a small island and its community. We caught some kilos of small fish with the local fishermen during the night thanks to their floating lamps technique. Villages and historical sites can be visited with local piki-pikis. Cottages are in excellent condition, service is great and food is delicious. The perfect 2-3 days stop out of the classic touristic route.

It isn't easy to find attractive, environmentally friendly, affordable, clean, comfortable accommodation in Kenya. Wayando ticks all those boxes and more. Excellent fresh seafood, warm, welcoming hosts, a sense of being part of the local community, and thoroughly relaxing. Linda and Sam where full of local information and always ready to help organise things. Wouldn't stay anywhere else if I went back to Rusinga.

Difficult or out-of-the-way depending on your view, but you certainly know you are not in a traditional hotel. We booked very late in the day but were still welcomed excellently despite out late arrival. The rooms are lovely but the best part of the place is the bar / restaurant in the central banda. It's pretty hard to keep to yourself totally there and the atmosphere makes for conversation and stories!

Whenever I need to meditate on a place or moment that I was happy and relaxed, I remember the time I spent at Wayando to accomplish a deep inner peace. This amazing eco-friendly place is an oasis on this rather dry island. The food is outstanding and prepared with love and care by a very wonderful staff. Linda the owner, is very warm and loving and is quick to make you feel like family. I can't wait to return here and go back to "my happy place"

Room Tip: any room is a good bet.

Linda is a sweetheart! The accommodations are really special here, very close to the earth and relaxing. Cold Tuskers, fresh fish, secluded beach on lake Victoria, hot showers, awesome composting toilets, great open air bar, friendly people, a really nice place. I took a Permaculture course on Rusinga and stayed at Linda's place the day before I left the island. I wish I stayed there a bit longer, but I know I'll be back.

As there are very few accommodation options at Rusinga, Wayando Club is like an Oasis... where you can really feel at home and get rest. The setup is simple and kind of traditional and it's an ideal place for people not looking for luxury and comfort but for rest, good food and pleasure of admiring the beauty of Lake Victoria which is just next to the cottages... Linda (the 'mum of the boma') makes the place a home for your stay on the island. I wish I could go back there one day again...
