“Will stay again when im back for sure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

This place was immaculate! It was a bit dated but very well maintained and very comfortable, our suite was large and had a full kitchenette, they view out the windows was stunning, the mountains and fields were beautiful, in the morning the cows go out to the fields and you hear the bells. Pricing was very fair and the Inns keeper (Ingrid i believe) was a sweet older woman who helped us with everything she could, she suggested restaurants and sights in the area. Its a short trip to Fussen to see the castles and not far to the Zugspitz to go up the mountain. The beds were some of the most comfortable we had in our 46 days in europe and the bedding was warm and wonderful, highly suggest the stay.

I had the misfortune to book an apartment in this establishment. This was the worst I have ever encountered in many many years of travelling to Austria. Hideous sixties decor that hasn't been touched since, the small bedroom had 2 wooden benches with ancient bits of green moquette upholstery plonked on them, over which was a threadbare sheet (with hairs on it), it felt damp, behind the bench were pieces of brown nylon carpet on a bit of wall that had dead flies & cobwebs on it, so I had to try to sleep on the equally ancient sofa in the living room, OMG! The kitchen bit is ancient, chipped and stained crockery and only 2 bowls and lot of odd cups/mugs most of which were unusable, no washing up liquid or soap. I was so glad I had brought anti-bac liquid with me and some kitchen roll. The oven was horrible. No microwave. The kettle was dirty as was the coffee machine. I had to ask for the electricity to be turned on at the mains, so obviously there was no fridge/freezer available, just dire. There were no bedside lamps, but under a wooden ledge there were some dusty bulbs that were so low wattage that you can't read by them. The shower room was small, dark and dingy, there was no light in the corridors & stairwell, I didn't see any other guests, although there might have been in the other building. I didn't see anyone in the breakfast room at 7.45. We only stayed for about 12 hours, and I was charged €124, the place doesn't take debit/credit cards so I had to drive into the nearest town to get cash!, then I put down €130 and didn't get any change! This place may have been nice in the sixties & seventies, but it has to drag itself into the 21st century at some point, there is a difference between alpine quaintness and just downright had-it. I have photos.

Room Tip: Don't book an apartment.

This is a typical Austrian guest house. Spacious, extremely well constructed, very warm, friendly owners, just 500 yards from the baby slopes and 1km from the cable car. Decor is a bit old fashioned but everything is immaculate. Herr and Frau Mayr are welcoming and friendly. We have 3 kids and since I could find no way to add the 3rd kid, we did our usual trick of showing up and hoping they'd let us all in. Frau Mayr certainly noted that we'd booked 4 and arrived with 5, but she was accommodating and provided a fold out bed for our 4 year old. She did charge us €100 for it (€20 per night) but that's fair enough. I highly recommend S'Hoamatl. Hofen itself is small, with just a small supermarket and a Gasthof (Restaurant/Pub). The food in the Gasthof is good but the service is very slow. Across the main road is a 2nd restaurant, Senner-something, which again has good food but is the first place in the world to charge €1.50 for tap water (to cover the cost of washing up the glasses they explained!!!). Needless to say we never went back and they lost their tip - really short sighted! The baby slope nearby is primarily used by the ski school. There's 2 blue slopes with a T-bar lift in the middle and a baby slope with a knotted-rope pull lift. The blue slopes are nice and the snow was good, although occasionally the queues can be a little long, especially as beginners fall off the T-bar. There's a number of restaurants in nearby Reutte (ca. 2km away), including a couple of Pizzerias / Italian Restaurants, a good value Chinese, and some Austrian restaurants. Very good for families, especially with kids learning to ski. Would be very little nightlife for couples, etc.

Room Tip: We were in Room 4, which is a spacious 2 bedroom with large living room and views of the ski slope...
