Stayed three nights but one night was really enough. Staff pleasant and tried hard to make us feel welcome but this 'hotel' is really a 'motel', largely catering for large coach parties staying one night only and is seriously in need of an upgrade. The bathroom (could have been cleaner ) was very generous in size but contained no bath, merely a small shower cubicle. The bedroom was also generously sized but suffered from very 'tired' decour .Did not have dinner but found an excellent local pub (Glenloch) in Newtonmore which had an wide menu choice and offered home cooked food at reasonable prices. The cooked Breakfast was disappointing - offered no real choice (take it or leave it !).
On the positive side, the Highlander is conveniently located for touring this area, is quiet ( quote 'the bar will be open until 11.00pm at the discretion of the Bar Manager'), and the staff pleasant.
Overall, a disappointing experience for what we paid - curiously Oxford Inns, the owners did not request guest feedback, nor did they particupate in the local Tourist Board grading scheme - to call the Highlander a 'hotel' is misleading customers as it does not offer the range of facilities normally expected for customers paying the full room rate.

“Excellent weekend break at the Highlander Hotel”

We are a young couple in our 20's who stayed at the Highlander Hotel for 2 nights during Feb. 2007 for a weekend break. Picked this hotel due to a great offer price through easybreak holidays.
Plenty of car parking close to all rooms on arrival.

Room was bigger than any other hotel room we have stayed in and was immaculate. Tea and coffee making facilities as well as a hairdryer, large vanity area and satellite television.

Service from all staff was excellent, very friendly and fantastic knowledge of local area for tourist information etc. We were on a skiing break to Aviemore which is only 12 miles from the hotel.

Good choice of food on dinner menu - choice of 3 starters, main courses and sweets to choose from with coffee to finish. Excellent service at meal times and great quality of food.

Don't have a bad thing to say about this hotel, we were very impressed and will be back in the near future, recommended!

We have just returned from a Highland tour with Newmarket Holidays staying at the Highlander as a base on a half board basis. Although some people did have smaller rooms (the hotel seems to be split into two halves for accomodation) we had a larger one and have no complaints about it.. We doubted that the small wall mounted heater would warm the room but it did. Food was of very good quality and the staff friendly and helpful which was very much appreciated by all the guusts there as far as I could tell. I am just at a loss as to why this hotel gets such bad reviews, maybe some people expect all places they visit to be Five Star luxery !!

“We loved the Highlander”

Highlander Hotel

My wife and I have just spent four enjoyable days at this hotel and we are so glad that we did not read these reviews before we went, otherwise we might not have stayed there. We cannot agree with these reviews.

Our experience was quite different. We arrived to a warm welcome from management and were given a modern warm comfortable en-suite room where we settled in before enjoying a lovely meal in the Dining Room. During our stay both the dinners and breakfasts were excellent and the helpings more than sufficient; the service was also very good indeed.

The hotel is just half a mile from the local shops and Newtonmore itself is a lovely village in which to spend a short holiday.

We would encourage others to go and enjoy what we enjoyed.
