“What a nice surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2009

We were a bit worried on arrival as the hotel looked a little "tacky" on the outside but was very pleasantly surprised when we got to our room. We had a king size bed in a large room with excellent bathroom facilities. Despite being a couple in a hotel that catered for large groups we were made to feel welcome and the staff took time out to be very friendly & hospitable.

After reading the reviews of this Hotel by previous contributors we were a little apprehensive as to what we would find. However upon arrival we were greeted by very friendly Reception Staff and found the Reception and Bedrooms clean and comfortable. Maybe the decor was not to everyones taste but nothing wrong with it. Considering there were three Coach parties in the Hotel the Kitchen and Dining Room Staff coped very well indeed. A Hearty Breakfast and a fixed Daily Dinner Menu with three choices for Starter,Main and Desert plus Tea and Coffee to follow, should have satisfied everyone.
Though there was not the option of Cheese instead of Desert, which some people would have appreciated.

We stayed here on our escorted bus tour. I'd compare this hotel to a Best Western or Howard Johnson's with a standard room. it was clean and in a residential area in a quiet neighborhood. It was nicely landscaped. The hotel provided dnner to our tour group and it was very good. The staff was very friendly. Considering the small village and the 40 people on the tour, I doubt there are better hotels in the immediate area and we slept well and had no complaints.

As you can see from the various responses we have received everyone has different expectations and I am sorry that the hotel did not meet with yours. We would like to add that the pictures on the website are current and are a true reflection of the hotel.

Had a good stay despite the hotel being very similiar to Fawlty Towers, we just didn't find Basil! Decor in public areas very outdated, lovely if you enjoy a 70's revival! Meals very strange combinations - one night they served up with fish smothered in a prawn sauce with new potatoes sprouts and very salty cabbage ( I mean very salty). Waiters coming and going not knowing which table they were supposed to be serving, thank goodness for Philip, who was excellent despite having to work with a bunch of clowns! The reastaurant also has a very low ceiling, so gets very hot, make sure you choose a table by a window. Hotel rooms basic but clean & tidy. We had a couple of fun evenings in the bar where Eric was very entertaining. We were on a coach trip & think the hotel caters mostly for this kind of customer, so it wouldn't be a hotel we would recommend to solo travellers or couples.

We are sorry that some aspects of your stay with us here at the Highlander did not meet with your expectations. We had a couple of new staff members and although they had their induction training you can appreciate that when they are faced with a full restaurant of 150 customers they can be a little daunted until they find their feet. Unfortunately I am led to believe that the cabbage had been double salted on the night in question and was only brought to our attention when it was too late to rectify. Our main business is group and tour but we do deal with many individual travellers and many commend us for the efficient way that we operate the hotel and indeed we have a high proportion of repeat business.

Great friendly staff to look after you, lots of customer parking, excellent food with a menu that changes every day, wi-fi in lounge, bar with outdoor picnic area for better weather, basic rooms but very clean and comfortable and rooms have televisions with freeview.

Golf course near by, great local pubs and restaurants, Highland Wildlife Park just a short drive away.

Overall - EXCELLENT! Can't wait to go back and would recommend to all!

£100 for 2 people dbb for 2 nights. Food was average, considering how cheap the deal was, I was more than happy.

Great base to go hill-walking or golfing in the area.

Staff very helpful and place was v clean.

Would def go again.
