“Terrible - ignore these reviews at your peril”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

I don't expect 5-star facilities from bunkhouse accommodation but have to agree with other reviewers that say this place is "awful" and "dreadful". The kitchen/dining area was filthy with the rest of the place not much better. It is an affront to Scottish hospitality that places like this are allowed to remain in business. The conditions might have just been acceptable in a mountain bothy stuck up a glen in the middle of nowhere but that is perhaps an unjustifiable slur on people using mountain bothies. There is another bunkhouse in the village and it will be getting my custom on any future visits to Newtonmore. Totally shocking and agree with himalheid that the EHO services of Highland Region should pay it a visit and perhaps close it down.

This hostel looks great on the web and in leaflets, and it probably was at some point in the past, and might be again in the future, but now it is simply dreadful. The place hasn't seen a coat of paint in years, the furniture is ancient, the bunks sway whenever anyone gets in or out, the mattresses are lumpy and uncomfortable.

If you are missing your VHS videos, take them with you and watch them on the hostel entertainment centre. Seriously, there is still a video in the common room. And that's probably one of the more up to date pieces of equipment in this place.

We were booked in for 2 nights but only stayed 1 and found a fantastic hostel at Tulloch Station.

Why this place merits 3 STB stars is beyond me. It's a joke.

Room Tip: A tip for a good room is to stay elsewhere. I have previously stayed in the Newtonmore hostel which...

This hostel is the most shabby, delipidated, unclean I have ever been in, the rest of the party I was with could not spend another night there, ashamed it is offering accomodation in Scotland.

The website for the hostel is completely misleading as this place doesn't deserve any stars and actually should be shut down by EHO.
We ended up being allocated to the small 'bothy' behind the main hostel, as he didn't open up the hostel for just a few people (we had seen the hostel though when we arrived and it's no better).
The place was unbelievably filthy - the bottle of dishwashing liquid had a layer of grease and grime on it; the shower curtain has over 30 cm of mould and gunk on the bottom; the bath hasn't been cleaned in years! No wonder the owner took our money at the doorway before we even got in properly.
I'll be contacting the authorities as the place needs to be shut down!

3 males and a couple booked in for 1 night on a motorcycling trip.
The owner said that he would be away when we arrived so he would leave the key under a stone near the door.
The accomodation was a small cottage behind the main hostel and to say it was rough would be an understatement. It needs a complete refurb.
We stayed the night but the couple with us refused to stay and had to find a b&b.
Can't comment on the main hostel only that it looks ok from the outside but make sure that you are not located in the cottage.

This is a complex story. We booked into the hostel, which all accounts is three star and looks quite impressive on the website and from the physical exterior. The only problem came with the fact that we were not located in the hostel.

Due to a double booking we were located into a cottage to the rear of the hostel.

The cottage building was extremely tired and need of an awful lot of care and attention. The problems included:

- The bedroom contained a double bed, less the size of an ordinary double bed. This made for awful sleeping however much we cosied up!
- The bedroon it was painted in a dirty grey;
- The curtain rail fell off the window and was previously held up by a single nail;
- The bed linen was clean but was ancient and extremely worn out;
- When we stripped the pillows of the covers at the end of our stay, they were considerably dirty;
- A door was missing on the oven ;
- The lounge chairs were worn out and exposing their stuffing (I am not clear that there were fire proof);
- The ceilings were starting to sag.
- The bedroom smelt of damp.

The advertised washing machine was broken and was essential so support the washing of our clothes on seven days of walking in the Cairngorms.

The whole building left us feeling fatally depressed. We could not stand anymore and had to truncate our 7 day star and move on to alternative accommodation.

In essence, I am sure that the main hostel building is fine but the alternative accommodation was certainly not. The owners, who double booked us, were absent on holiday so would could not directly tackle the issues that troubled us.
