“Fast And friendly. ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2014

Great welcome, good food and a wide range of good beer. Pub Valhalla.
This is the place to eat in Newtonmore. We would have stayed too but they were full.
We shall return.

“Lucky find on trip down A9”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2014

I found this place by chance when I was travelling south on the A9 after a work trip to Inverness. The A9 is a terrible road and as happens often there had been an accident that was reported to be causing long delays. Rather than sit in traffic I pulled off at the Kingussie/Newtonmore turn off and went in search of lunch. In tourist areas in Scotland you often find very non descript food and very high prices. The Glen was a very lucky find for me. It is situated on the far side of Newtonmore heading away from Kingussie. It looks decent from the outside with flower boxes and things which was what drew me in. There is also a good sized car park at the side. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The menu has a good selection of "pub food" and there is a specials board with a couple of starters and mains. The bar serves a wide selections of wines and real ales. The refrigerator with the desserts in it looked very tempting too but I just had something from the lunch time "lite bites menu". The light lunches are in fact pretty hearty portions. I had a chicken fillet roll with BBQ mayo. It comprised several chicken fillets in a lovely light batter. It was very tasty and excellent value for money coming as it did with a bucket of fries and a lovely side salad. There was only one glitch in that my order was not passed into the kitchen. I waited a considerable time for my food and it was only when I spoke to a member of staf when I noticed people who had come in well after me getting their food that the problem was sorted. In fairness though the staff were most apologetic about it. The toilets are also very clean and there are good baby changing facilities if you need that. It is worth venturing off the A9 and finding this place. It will not add much time to your journey to do that. Heading out of town away from Kingussie I was back on the main A9 again in minutes and a bit further down the road. Unfortunately not far enough south to avoid the traffic jam.

“Good Pub food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

Reasonable prices and decent pub food. Very busy place so be sure to make a reservation. You have to order your food and drinks at the bar. The liver dinner was bland, the venison was good, the beef was good. Service was very friendly however the food coming out of the kitchen was on slow side as the place was very busy.

“Soaked by the rain and a warm welcome.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

I first telephoned the Glen Hotel to enquire about their facilities and to see if there was any place nearby to camp for the evening. The member of staff was very helpful and as such this establishment received the extra business of three meals and nine pints, all of which were consumed within the friendly warm environment of the hotel.

The staff were very friendly and welcoming with a warm smile and plenty of upbeat charisma. Their knowledge of the drinks for sale was welcoming and accurate.

We all had cheese burger and chips; I had mine without the cheese, and the food was fantastic, no pretentious burgers in this hotel (the stupid narrow towering burgers that only stay together because they have a wooden stick plunged through them) only real burgers came out of the kitchen, the salad was perfect, not drenched with overpowering dressing; the chips were crisp and cooked in clean oil, we all left clean plates and enjoyed every bit.

We arrived soaked to the gills and every member of staff made us feel welcomed.

Friendly atmosphere, friendly staff, good selection on the pumps (for a non city bar), great food and clearly a well organised and managed kitchen. Hats off to the chef.
