“Disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

We have been visiting Captain Digby's for the past 12+ and have always recommend to friends and family and have always had fantastic meals and service.Since Tony and Shirley have left things have gone down hill.Staff not friendly like before, food quality is now average.Menu has changed alot, but not for the good.Last few times we have visited including today, we have been really disappointed, such a shame always been a great place to come.Ladies toilets today had no toilet roll, staff took ages to replace. We feel today is the last time in 12 years we will visit.Bring back the Yorkie for adults, quality of food and the old staff.

I am sorry to hear that after many visits to the Captain Digby, recently it has not been the same for you. I must of course mention that there are still quite a few members of staff that have served inbetween 8-14 years with us and still remain.

Since the previous Managers left this venue, our Head Chef Robert, who has been with us now for over 13 years serving food throughout this time in this position. Robert is now General Mananger here at The Captain Digby.

Still preparing his fresh home cooked food with his dedicated kitchen team behind him, he also has myself and a new Assistant Manager to manage the venue. With new staff training methods in place, and the spring/summer approaching, we are very hopeful for the future.

Our menu has had a few changes, as you can appreciate every venue has to make changes every now and then to provide variety to all of our customers. Our 'Giant Yorkie' has been missed by many of our customers and I do apologise that this is no longer available and for any inconvenience caused on your last visit, but I do hope in time you will visit the Captain Digby on another occasion.

Thank you for your comments

“couldn't have asked for anymore.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

myself and my hungry made family made a long day trip down to broadstairs, however found that most resturants in the area were not very children frendley, however when we took the wrong turn and found The Captain digby we couldnt belive our luck. Tired, hungry and feed up this soon made our day. We had no booking and the both resturant and bar area were very busy as expcted to be on a sunday. The resturant manager however ensured us we could have a table for 5 (2adults 3 children) but their was a little wait but as the children had been in the car for some time they were more than happy to find an indoor play area to let off a little steam while we waited for our table. Only 20 minuites had passed when we were told a table had come free in the family dining area (bar) but this was great as it ment the children could still play we could relax, all eat and enjoy watching the children and the amazing views all at the same time. The staff, well what can i say..... they were all great so helpful and smiles all round, the food what excatley what pub grub is about and as for the puddings, they were amazing (recommend the choc melt). over all this is by far the best experiance we have had in a family resturant for some time, even with the lovley open fires and old fashioned decoration all suited the venue for the propery. (country bumpkin, love it reminds me of being a child myself).
I would visit again and again 100% thankyou.

“Truly awful”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

It is hard to get the enthusiasm to write a review after such a disappointing experience, but here goes.
The Digby used to specialise in top quality, freshly cooked pub grub but after the previous manager Tony left it went quickly downhill. Nonetheless like my visits to Leyton Orient you hope that everything will suddenly change and we will be back to division one and season '61-2 so after a gap of a year we returned with quiet optimism, sadly misplaced.
The first thing you notice is the smell of sweaty kids from the play area, which permeates to the bar.
The menu has changed and lacks the favourites of before, the giant yorkshire pudding filled with beef stew being particularly missed, strangely the weight of the chicken breast was quoted. Portion control?
Everything was of the poorest quality possible, this was a symphony of catering pack, deep fry and microwave without peer. Of 5 hearty eaters not one of us finished our meal.
Our waiter made the standard is everything ok enquiry (he obviously hadn't noticed the unfinished meals he was clearing away) and in response the manageress appeared, she was brusque and efficient but wasn't listening to us thinking that free desserts would fix all. Alas, we could face no more.
If anyone is interested an included childs dessert goes unclaimed. Bids on Ebay please.

I do remember this particular issue, and I must apologise for you not having an enjoyable experience. We do boast our fresh, home cooked food.

We have the same Head Chef that has been with us for 13 + years and in the last 3 + years also became our General Manager. We have made a few changes to our menu and I must agree that the 'Giant Yorkie' has been sadly missed by many of our customers, but all of our dishes are still cooked the same as they were 13 years ago.

As mentioned in your review you sat down in our Family Dining area which is right next to our Playarea. We do have a seperate raised Cliff Top Restaurant with a sea view which is away from the Playarea and Bar, which you may have preffered and is available to any of our customers.

However, we do appreciate that every so once in a while we can make mistakes. We are always happy to change or replace any meals at the start or during meals. If we are not notified when check backs are made during meals, which were made by myself and my waiter on this particular occasion, then we will offer desserts and drinks free of charge at the end of the meal once we are notified.

I hope that you will continue to visit the Captain Digby, and again i must apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“Well designed and well run”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013 via mobile

Really well laid out premises. Children's play area is large and imaginative. Ideal for kids parties and parents can have a drink in the adjoining bar or have a meal. There is a pleasant seating area overlooking the bay with comfortable lounge seating. The restaurant is a good size and not too cramped, most tables have a sea view. Pleasantly decorated and really quite cosy. The food menu is well thought out and plenty of choices to suit all tastes. The meals that our party enjoyed were well prepared and well presented. Good value. Staff were pleasant, professional and well trained. The girl who ran the restaurant had an attitude problem. Outside there is plenty of parking with access to the beach. There is also a good play area next to the car park. I remember when Sparrowhawk ran this pub, forty years ago, when pubs were for drinking and having fun. Then there was a huge log fire and mainly local punters who seriously enjoyed themselves. Nowadays, when smoke free pubs are closing down at an alarming rate, the only way to survive is to be top dog, and Mr Thorley can certainly hold his own by providing a good standard of service and a clean, pleasant environment. This pub can be extremely busy in the summer holidays and parking can be a problem with beach users pinching parking spaces. Otherwise this is a highly recommended pub in the highly acclaimed Thorley chain. Enjoy! Pedroofpobla
