“Lovely weekend stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2013

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights courtesy of a Wowcher offer and I have to say it's one of the nicest places we've stayed at. The staff are all very helpful and friendly and the hotel is warm and welcoming.
Our room was clean and tidy but, without sounding derogatory, tired. However, the wonderful view over the river more than made up for any short-comings. It was a comfortable room and we had no real complaints.
We ate at the restaurant both evenings and the food was good both nights. Our only minor criticism was with the portion sizes. They were very generous which does make a welcome change but we struggled to eat it all. They quality of dinners was nice and there are no complaints here. Breakfasts were also equally fine. Plenty of choice to be had too.
Overall, I'd be more than happy to go back and we hope to certainly do so perhaps when the weather is warmer and be able to take in more of the beautiful scenery.
If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful weekend break then look no further.

Just returned from the Royal Lodge. Had a wonderful time and have come back feeling completely relaxed. The staff were very welcoming and constantly friendly throughout our stay, nothing was too much trouble. We stayed for 2 nights on B&B basis - breakfast is a buffet style for continential and waitress for full english, fresh lovely food. We didnt bother trying to find somewhere else to dine in the evening as the food was so good, hot and fresh, I do recommend the scampi or the fish and chips.

The room was clean and tidy with the best view ever. I would recommend asking or Room 12 as it is in the attic overlooking the river, the view is breath taking.

The decor could does look a little tired but thats part of the character of the hotel, together with the open fires and the lovely burning wood smell outside. They have lovely touches at the hotel with leather sofas in the porch so that you can take in the scenery even if it pours down.

We will definiately go back there in the future, and yes there was no mobile connection but that just made the weekend even more relaxing.

Room Tip: Ask for Room 12 if you can manage the stairs

Just returned from the Royal Lodge. We had a fantastic stay. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. We stayed 2 nights. Breakfast was delicious on both mornings with plenty of choice and the cooked breakfast was fresh and piping hot. We ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was very nice and well presented. Our room was comfortable without being spectacular.
The general atmosphere of the hotel was very welcoming and as it was February was very cosy with log burning stoves. Symonds Yat is an amazing place and well worth a visit even in the winter.

The Royal Lodge was fantastic. The staff couldn't be more helpful and were there for anything we needed. The breakfast that was included was lovely and you could have a choice of continental and/or a fry up, the evening meals were worth the money and you could tell they were all made fresh and to order. We stayed in a double room which was plenty big enough and very clean! Will be returning and recommending to friends and family!

We stayed at the Royal Lodge on a voucher, so got good value for B & B. No mobile signal, which contributes to a feeling of getting away from it all.
The staff were great - we got lost on the way, phoned reception and got good directions - be warned, satellite mapping in the area is inaccurate, so route planner sites and satnavs have hiccups. Everyone we met was friendly, welcoming and helpful.
The room was nicely decorated, with a lovely view over the Wye, the bed was really comfortable, the shower room was a little small, but clean, with plenty of hot water and great big towels.
We were slightly nervous about what to expect with the food, as some previous reviews were discouraging. We had nothing to worry about - the food was delicious, with a good choice of dishes, we decided to eat in the hotel on the second night as well as the first. Breakfast was plentiful and very good - I can recommend the scrambled egg with smoked salmon.
In essence, a great place to go if you want to relax in beautiful surroundings.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

Stayed here with my partner in the Autumn 2012. Beautiful location, charming hotel, friendly staff and fantastic food. It really felt like we were experiencing fine dining in a fab location. Consequently our expectations were high for our second and most recent visit on the 20/21st January 2013. We booked two nights dinner, bed and breakfast looking forward to the great food.
The location was obviously still great and enhanced by the recent snow fall. The hotel still charming, the room lovely with a nice view and the staff friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the food was a great disappointment. The fine dining experience now felt more like an over price pub food experience.
As most people (including ourselves) would have been surprised by this review I'll try to explain our reasoning.
The restaurant menu was small and uninspired. I do not count the bar menu. If I want bar food I'll go to a pub.
The portions were way too big to the point of being obscene and I am a big eater. Quanity will never replace quality.
For starter my partner tried the garlic mushrooms which were very nice despite the huge portion. They were so good she had them twice, but as previously stated the menu was limited.
I tried the prawn and mussel dish. That's all it really was, prawns, mussels, lettuce, mayonaise. Feeling a bit adventureous I tried the pigeon. Now I have never had this so didn't know what to expect. I was served what I can only describe as slices of tasteless gristle. Maybe that is what pigeon is like I don't know but I would be surprised if other people would pay good money for that.
For main we both tried the steak. Although okay (not great and a ridiculously large portion) that is all it was. No sauce, drizzle, imagination, very dull and expensive for what it was.
My partner also tried the Sheppards Pie from the bar menu again as the restaurant menu was so limited. She described this as bland and over priced.
I tried the Woodland Country pork. I didn't know pork loin could be so tough. Maybe this was because the meat looked under cooked. It included a dish made of layered potato and red cabbage. This was also too large and like the rest of the dish very bland.
We didn't try the desserts as the huge portions left no room however the dinner cost allowance barely covered two courses so dessert would have been a supplement.
Back on the plus side the breakfasts were excellent.
As stated in the title, what has changed?
Despite our disappointment (which was compounded by our high expectations) I would definately recommend this hotel for a stay but would currently recommend eating elsewhere, well unless your are just looking for bar food.

We are somewhat perturbed by our guest review.

We value all of our guests and their feedback. We have an extensive restaurant menu that endeavors to cater for all needs, budgets and tastes. From reading this review we are upset that our guest choose not to bring any of the issues raised to our attention. We are unable to rectify any situation should we not be made aware of them at the time.

Kind Regards,
