“Poor Lunch”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

This was the second time we visited the Pub for Lunch and it will be the last. The menu is basic the service was poor due to a lack of staff, overpriced food; £5.95 for a cheese roll - the roll was possibly the worst bread that my daughter and I had tasted. Chips that were greasy. It is such a shame because the place is pleasant inside but once again a classic case of how easy it is in UK Pubs to get it so wrong.

After a bracing walk around the nearby Calke Abbey looking at the baby lambs, we decided that we needed some hot food to thaw us out. The queues at Calke in the restaurant were huge so we decided to venture elsewhere. We visited the Staff of Life a few years ago and had a steak and ale pie that was at best tepid. Today's steak and ale pie was hot and full of meat with fantastic chips, peas and rich meaty gravy. My wife enjoyed the chicken and ham pie and my son said the sausages in his childrens sausage and mash were the best he'd ever had. Well recommended for a hearty pub lunch.

We stayed at the Staff for 2 nights, our room was of a very high standard and finish, quality from top to bottom and immaculately clean. The staff were very friendly & helpful during our stay. The meal we had in the restaurant was also of an excellent standard, as was breakfast. We would highly recommend the Staff of Life and hope to return soon, we really could not fault the place.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 6, from the standard of the decor and furnishings in our room i have no doubt that...

I only stayed one night but will definitely stay here again when in the area. My room was pleasantly decorated, the bed was very comfy and the shower room was a good size. The in-room selection of toiletries and teas was excellent and the wifi was free and easy to access.

Typically I stay at international 3 and 4 star hotels, what a breath of fresh air The Staff of Life is, a colleague of mine who lives locally booked me into this pub / hotel. The landlady Kay showed me to a spacious en-suite bedroom that was well provisioned, clean and recently renovated. Although there was no iron provided Kay was only too willing to iron my shirt that night. I had an excellent meal with my colleague in the bar - fresh traditional fare from a wide menu.
After a good and quiet night's sleep a good breakfast with a wide choice again set me up for the day's meeting ahead.
I hope to come back soon and would definitely recommend for a weekend break with access to Derbyshire and the Peak District

The food is excellent & good portions.
I defy anyone to leave here hungry.
The staff are very friendly & helpful.
The owner is rightly proud of the traditional pub/ hotel

Very friendly welcome and hospitable host and all the staff. Nothing was too much trouble which is rare these days! Accommodation was lovely, decor stylish but also very clean. Great location for walking and to visit Derbyshire's attractions. Will definitely go back.
