“Hotel Las Olas, La Palma”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2013

This was our first visit to the island of La Palma, this hotel was good value at €135 for 3 nights, room only. the rooms were clean and spacious, however the beds were very uncomfortable, the mathress was very thin, a thicker mathress would rectify this. the hotel itself is lovely the woodwork is stunning.
we had dinner here on one night, reasonable value, food was good, could be a little hoter and the selection of hot food could be better. but all in all good value

We arrived at La Palma airport on the Thomsonfly flight at around 20:00. Weather was very overcast, but at least it was dry!! Transfer to the Las Olas was a mear 10 minutes, the pool almost at the end of the runway..The hotel reception was very modern and bright. Lovely seating areas and modern bar area downstairs. The receptionist very pleasant and a fantastic English speaker. We had a second floor apartment with huge balcony and stunning see views. Apartment was large with breakfast bar area, 2 electric cooking rings and microwave. No kettle.
Once we had dropped off our cases we went down to the dining room, where evening meals were available until 22:00. First impressions of the food were poor, but we were prepared for this as had read other reviews before we travelled.
Our first day the weather was terrible, overcast black cloudy skies and cold wind. After an extremely average breakfast of crusty bread an egg that had been sitting on the warm plate since 07:00 and a la palma yogurt, we decided to get the bus from the bus stop outside the hotel. Please remember about "Siesta" time in Spain as everything closes. A ten minute journey, worthwhile if you want to wander up the 1 main street which has all of the bars, shops and a few restaurants on it. All very quaint and Spanish, but not much else apart from that 1 street. We gathered from the hotel staff and locals that Los Llanos is much larger and more scenic but is a 1 hour 20 minute journey by bus to the west coast of the island over mountainous terraine.
The rest of the week we lay by the beautiful hotel swimming pool, overlooking the sea.clouds come down from the mountains every day at around 3pm, there are NO sunny evenings but it's always warm.
The evening meals were dull and limited choice. There were only 4 or 5 choices of main meal with chips, aubergines and sprouts..Food was so poor we splashed out one evening to eat at La Placeta in Santa Cruz. We sat inside in this beautiful restaurant and couldn't get over the authentic Spanish modern mix dining area. Food was fantastic, mostly steak, seafood etc with gorgeous homemade deserts. Around 25 euros per person.
During our stay at the Las Olas we only saw around 20 other guests, where are all the tourists? The pool area on the busiest day had only 6 people round it..perfect for us as there were no fights over the sunbeds!! We enjoyed our lazy, quiet days but it was like being on a villa holiday with several people using our swimming pool. The resort has a handfull of restaurants, all catering mainly for the locals but service pleasant.
La Palma is scenic with lots of interesting excursions which can be booked by your rep. Or you can hire a car and explore the island yourself. It does seem as though they were expecting many tourists, but most of the bars and restaurnats are closed down. Maybe the economic downturn has effected tourism on the island.
Overall our holiday was very enjoyable. Plenty of peace, relaxation and warm sunshine. DON'T book the Las Olas if you are expecting anything other than a base to explore.
