“Excellent hotel - great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2011

This hotel is located far above the village Tolox. So you would need a car to get to the hotel. From the hotel you have a great view over the village and valley. The rooms are very nice. The restaurant serves good food and good snacks at the pool.
Nice place to relax for a few days and also for walking into the Sierra de las Nieves.

We've just celebrated our wedding in the Hotel Cerro de Hijar and we had a magical day.

- This hotel is in an amazing location. The surrounding is beautiful and almost surreal.

- This hotel has amazing food. The ingredients are fresh and all the dishes are superb. Being French I am very fussy and demanding with my food but here I am always impressed with the quality and the taste of the food.

- This hotel has an amazing staff, they will always try to help you and make your stay as pleasant as they can.

For all these reasons we chose this hotel as our venue for our wedding and it was the perfect choice.
We had an amazing and unforgettable wedding. All our guests found the hotel amazing and one of them said it was a piece of paradise on earth and it is.

These was our, at least, 5th visit and we know we will be back very soon.
We have travelled in many places, stayed in many luxurious hotels (as my husband and I also travel for work) but it never felt as great as being in this hotel. This is a home away from home in a superb environment.
If you need to switch off from a hectic life in an amazing setting I would highly recommend Hotel Cerro de Hijar. And if you look for a piece of paradise to celebrate a perfect wedding, this is the venue to choose with the best hotel staff you could find.

After our daughter's wedding we wanted a few days of peace, tranquility, beautiful scenery, good walking and fine food. What did we get? All of it, in spades. We took Room 1, a splendid two floor suite with magnificent views from the tower out over the plains some 1500 feet below us towards Alhaurin and Malaga - breath-taking. The public room are very comfortable and relaxing. The weather stopped us enjoying the pool and spa but they looked very enticing. For walkers there is an enormous variety of pathways throught the Sierra des Nieves, for all levels of ability, The food is really good; breakfast is simple, fresh and filling whilst the evening meals are great, the 'menu del dia' is terrific value for money, the 'gastronomic' would cost you twice as much in the UK and probably wouldn't match it for quality.Wines are good quality and very reasonably priced. Everything we wanted and great value for money. Martin and Gullermo were good hosts and from martin we learned how to cook and, just as important, eat a real paella.

Room Tip: Room 1 is worth every penny

3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2011

Eight weeks before our arrival we booked the suite for three nights, based on the photos shown on the hotel web-site. On arrival we were shown into a very large rather drab bedroom (number 6), not what I would call a suite, overlooking the reception area car park from one window and the general car park on the other. Luckily we were able to change to a smaller room with views over the valley; after all, why come to such an isolated place to see and hear motor vehicles from a close distance?
As we were probably the first to book a suite for the dates of our stay (I checked), I cannot understand why we were given such an inferior room: after all we booked full price on-line direct with the hotel and I confirmed the booking by phone a few days later. Perhaps it's because we're not Spanish?
There are many comments on the excellence of the food and the hotel does have several good dishes, such as the foie mi-cuit, the spinach pancake or the duck. However, some of the dishes are laughably overpriced and not very special. We tried the chicken soup, some strands of flesh floating in a watery bowl of what looked like frozen vegetables. My mother's chicken soup was considerable more nourishing and tasty. The lasagne was very dry and rather insipid. In general there appeared to be a lack of fresh vegetables, surprising in Andalousia. Where there was veg it appeared to be for decorative purposes and looked as though it came from the sort of assortment that you find in the supermarket freezer. On the other hand the wines were very good as were the croissants and pains au chocolat at breakfast. The dining room was fine both in size and ambiance. The male staff who served at table and also managed reception were unfailingly charming.
I do not recommend this hotel during Spanish holidays, as noise from the ground floor reaches the bedrooms as though amplified by the tiled floors. Also, the soundproofing between rooms is negligible, so if a neighbour coughs in the night, you hear it. The plumbing is a disaster, so unless you're a heavy sleeper the first toilet flush will wake you; if a neighbour takes a shower then you have to pause your conversation. Out of season though, and with few guests, I can imagine that the hotel can be delightful....so long as you get the room you expected.

By the way, we don't usually stay in suites, but this was for a special occasion, hence the title!

Perched on the top of a hill with incredible views, awesome hiking opportunities and simply exquisite food.

My only criticism would be that at weekends they are little bit busy and the personal service isn't quite as perfect, but they still get a 9 out of 10!

Beautiful place to stay!

What a lovely place to spend a long weekend! We relaxed, ate in the sunny courtyard, ate in the lovely dining rom, slept outside, and just soaked up the view. Hosts could not have been more friendly and helpful and attentive. Definitely recommend.

I had a great time at Cerro de Hijar. The room was very comfortable and the service was friendly and consistent. I enjoyed the beautiful view of the town of Tolox at the base of the mountain. The hotel was centrally located for day trips to Marbella, Rondo, Rock of Gibraltar and Malaga. I enjoyed the quietness and seclusion of the hotel and was able to rest.
