we visited alvor last june as my parents in law were re-newing their wedding vows, they always stay in an apartment that they rent from a friend but on this occasion there was not enough room for us to stay. we did not personaly book the jardim, a friend of my parents in law did as this was the closest hotel to the apartment, and as we were only staying for a few days we thought it would be fine. we looked at the hotel on a couple of travel agents websites and it looked ok. when arriving outside the jardim we were a little worrid, from the outside it looked seedy and not in the best condition, when we went to the reception to check in......oh dear! Small, dirty and seedy, more like a hostel. the woman on the check in took our passports and wrote the passport numbers next to our booking.

just behind the reception is the bar.......if you can call it that, it is a tiny room with a bar that looks like a shop front and PLASTIC patio type chairs around the edge of the room, it looked more like a waiting room.

after checking in we were shown to our room............

the lady on the check in showed us to the lift...if you can call it that. the lift is TINY and with 3 people in it and 2 suitcases it was a tight squeeze, the lift started moving and a red light started flashing LIFT OVER WEIGHT, we are not exactly heavy people either! even check in lady looked a little concerned!

after squeezing out of the lift we were shown to our room......

we were lead down a narrow, dingy, dirty hallway with paper peeling off the wall and in to the hole they called our room. it was so dark in there even when we did open the metal shutter on the balcony and windows. the room was tiny with 2 single beds a small kitchen and 1 wardrobe. 1 wardrobe is all you get for both of you to put all your luggage in - no drawers no shelves - nothing.
the interior is very out dated and the heat in the room was unbearable, there is no air con and no fans. we ventured into the bathroom which was so small that you had to keep the door open to be able to move around comfortably. the bathroom was also dingy and dirty with no windows and the paint was coming off the inside of the bath.

we could not wait to get out so we decided to go visit the rest of the family at the apartment which was just down the hill. as we came down the stairs (we could not face the lift again) we realised that we were not given our passports back! we went back to reception and asked for them back and the woman got really funny with us and told us that we would get them back on departure we said that we were not happy with this and wanted them back now, to which she practically threw them back at us...thanks theres customer service for you!

we walked down the hill to the beautiful apartment where the others were staying and told them about the horrors of the jardim and they said they had found a fold away double bed and if things were that bad we could stay on that! it was like all our christmas's had come at once! we went straight back to the hotel re-packed checked out and didn't look back! the mean lady on reception was none to pleased and said that we could not get our deposit back but who cares we were out of there!

so not a good experience we did not even spend a night there. the photos on the websites look okay and they advertise as a 3* this hotel is not a 3*, i would note even give it a star rating. if you are staying here good luck! try to change hotels if you can!

We have used this complex on and off for many years, it is up a hill, so not for the infirm or elderly, but the views are worth it. Never had a bad apartment, very clean & friendly. The food is great, but then again, all the local facilites are great. Great value for money. Hoping to visit this establishment again in March 2006.

I had researched this hotel using various websites and I thought this would be a decent, inexpensive place to stay - it was horrible! We reserved a studio for 50 Euro a night and they booked us in the Jardim I (the older building) and it was dark, smelly and just disgusting plus the location is on the out skirts of town, far away from the center of town. We asked the very rude receptionist if she could move us and she said they had nothing else to offer so we left. I would not board my animals at this hotel!! We then spent two hours trying to find other accomodations in the area. The 3 star ratings in the Algarve are not equivalent to a 3 star in other areas that you travel. I would recommend staying at the 4 stars in the Algarve. Luckily, we found the Alagoamar hotel for 60 Euros, a 4 star hotel that was only 10 Euro's more and was perfect!
