“Very Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 21, 2013

We had an extremely good holiday here. The hotel is very tidy and clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Our room was cleaned every day, with new towels and clean sheets. The pool area is clean and there are enough sun beds for everyone to use.
In some reviews we read that it was a 10 minute walk in to Alvor. I would say it was more around a 15 - 20 minute walk so if you have small children it might be worth getting a taxi and it's worth asking for directions to the centre and the beach as we spent a good 40 minutes walking around not really knowing where we were going as the signs are not to clear as to were to go.
The food in the hotel is fine. We went bed and breakfast which worked well as you got as much as you wanted to eat for breakfast. You then have the option to explore the restaurants around the small town which I would recommend as we found some very nice ones. They also serve snacks and sandwiches at the bar by the pool which was fine for a light lunch.
Overall I would recommend this hotel and the resort of Alvor.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the pool have a much nicer view.

Why only 3? The room is small, the bathroom is very small. The hotel is nice, the pool and the gardens are very nice. It's very quiet and peacefull. Nice to take some time to rest. The breakfast doesn't have much choice, but it's good. The beach is 5 to 10 minutes by car. By walk is far away, I think 20 to 30 minutes walking. The small village of Alvor is very nice, lots of restaurants near the river site. Very good food! lots of english bars.

Its my second time here, and I will repeat. The cost/benefits are nice, specially if you find some promotions to this hotel like I did.

Have a nice stay!

Room Tip: Pool and Garden view!!

We met another Yellow Hotel searcher on our treasure hunt for this hotel. At breakfast the next day, our fellow traveller said he too had taken one and a half hours, from entering Alvor, to find the hotel. Lack of signposts didn't help, nor did the fact that the hotel's address didn't come up on our newly updated sat nav. With the help of three different locals, we eventually arrived, and found no sympathy from the reception.
Breakfast: lack of fresh fruit, well, lack of a lot of things, i'm not saying that they were, but the scrambled eggs looked and tasted like powered. I had lovely brown rolls, fresh tomato and olive oil each morning and took my own green tea - just as well, as green tea was also lacking.
The walk into the town was more difficult than we expected - the pavement is small cobbles, pretty to look at but difficult to walk on in heals. We like to walk, but we got a taxi back up the hill to the hotel after being out, at about 5euros per trip. That adds up if you want to go twice a day and go by taxi each way.
The gardens are so pretty. The picture of the landing stage over the water is part of a pond and not the river as i'd thought. Lack of sunbeds, although not many people on them or in the pool...
We discovered too late that the couple singing and playing in the evening were excellent, and wish we'd seen them earlier on our trip. We didn't eat our evening meal in the hotel, as the buffet menu didn't offer anything I could eat as a veggie/vegan, so by the time we came back from town, the music players had finished.

Really nice hotel and pleasant place to stay in such a beautiful town. Pool area excellent and plenty of space. Maids excellent and rooms extremely clean. Needs to have some investment and pool staff needed to be a little more proactive.

We were at the hotel at the same time as the previous reviewer and disagree completely with their opinion regarding the pools. There was a problem with the jacuzzi which the maintenance man was dealing with, but we swam in both the indoor and the larger outdoor pools, as did a number of other guests. The water outdoors was a bit chilly but the pool was clean and the surrounding area well tended. The indoor pool was a much more comfortable temperature. I agree that some areas of the hotel are shabby, but Portugal has suffered far more than some countries from recession and many complexes were completely closed, including the one immediately in front of this hotel. When our minibus pulled up outside we thought the only thing missing was tumbleweed, as everything leading up to the hotel looked so abandoned. However once inside we received a warm welcome, and found all the staff to be helpful and friendly. Our room was small but adequate and the beds were a bit too firm for our liking, but everything worked and was spotless if a bit dated. Sheets and towels were changed every day. We had a room overlooking the gardens and were delighted with the view from our balcony. The food wasn't anything special, but everything was edible and there was plenty of it. We even had dinner one evening, which was surprisingly good and excellent value as you can eat as much as you like from the buffet. I was disappointed with my hot chocolate, which was miniscule especially given the 2.50 euros it cost. If Only there had been a kettle in the room...... That said, we had a lovely relaxing break and wouldn't hesitate to go back to this hotel as it offers good value for money. Some reviewers seem to have forgotten that they probably booked it based on price. If you want luxury this is definitely NOT the place to stay, but for chilling out in lovely surroundings it's fine. The Al Capone restaurant just down the road, as mentioned by others, is superb and does fabulous hot chocolate too!

Room Tip: Definitely go for a garden view room.

Do you know what? The Yellow Garden Alvor is a cracking little hotel - it's my 2nd visit here (2008 and May 2013) and I'm thrilled I brought my husband here.
I would say I am a pretty demanding regular corporate traveller and for the £200pp we paid for flights, parking, transfers and hotel b&b we have had a very good deal.

The staff are kind and helpful, the rooms are small but perfectly formed, with heaps of storage, spotlessly clean and comfortable. We do have twin beds pushed together as other reviewers have mentioned, but means we got a good nights sleep and no fighting over covers.

It is a 20 minute stroll up a small hill from the town - but we're not fit, we're foodies and found it perfect to work off our belly full of delicious barbequed fish and vinho verde!
The gardens are beautiful, your neighbours are egrets, ponies and other lovely birds...more than enough sun loungers round the pool (which was clean and inviting throughout our time)

I suspect we'll be back a 3rd time...Alvor is too quaint and the Yellow is a perfect base for sun worshippers, cocktail lovers and foodies with a penchant for historic winding streets, fishing boats and peace and quite at the top of town.

If you want a clean bed and smily faces, no ghastly chavvy evening entertainment and beautiful views then book with confidence. The bar is very well stocked, the food is not Michelin starred but perfectly edible, quite tasty and varied, but go b&b and enjoy the plethora of fabulous restaurants in the town. You will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Only ever had a pool room and can recommend it highly.

We stayed here 6th May-10th May for my boyfriends 25th birthday, we were so pleased when we arrived and saw the views as you cant see how nice it is from the fromnt when you enter until you go to reception and look accross and out at the views and through the corridors to your room, great views, we were in room 211 moon but after the day in there, when it got to night and we realised after returning from exploring and eating out we realised the air con and fridge didnt work, or the tv, we arranged for someone to come and look that didnt speak any english but the reception staff that sent him did so he knew what the prolems were, we were told they couldnt be fixed until the next day as there were problems so offered a room change just a few away still with great view and they checked everything worked well in there first, we only had little luggage so packed up, carried everything and went to room 204 moon which was still great view, although preffered 211, but it was so hot there was no way we could have stayed in there, everything else we could have coped with but the air con really made us able to breath it was so stuffy before, when we unpacked again it was great, tv, lovely air con, cold fridge for drinks ect. They took our call charges that we had made in the previous room off as a gesture for the trouble and were good about it, we really didnt mind as even thou it was late and a hastle to pack again, we knew we wanted to as we needed to be cool, ha.
The rooms were great, everything you need, we found everything lovely. The food very basic and limited in there i wouldnt eat there just good for drinks, quite reasonable prices, levely and cold, plenty of choice of cocktails, cold drinks, pringles ect. The bar men were ace, very friendly, nothing too much trouble, every drink had lots of ice and lime or lemon, if you took your glass back to them at bar they'd almost jump and say "it's ok" as they thought they should collect and you shouldnt have to take back but we were just being normal and helpful and it was geat to feel looked after. We had bed and breakfast but if went again wouldnt bother with breakfast, there was enough choice, just not very tasty at all, it got to the point where we just didnt go and we got something when we went out, so there was no point in having paid, not too great but not a problem, lovely places around for snacks ect. The pool outside was freezing so sisnt bother but we swam 2 or 3 times in the indoor one, they all could have done with being cleaner, quite dirty, once it had just been cleaned when we went in but the other twice i could have skipped it but was persuaded by the other half, if you dont mind then its great for a swim, cool when getting in but as soon as you are in totally it's ok, it was very deep though, i am 5.6ft and only on my tip toes it was above my chin, you just have to swim and then it's ok but stanmding it's full to the top so be careful with little kids ect.
But was good fun, gym is a good offering, play area next room to gym too. Overall could do with cleaner but was good. We really enjoyed our holiday and once you find where you are its great fun, get a taxi to casa do ria on the harbour and have fillet steak :) Enjoy. D&A
