“Great beach, staff and room but ..........”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2013

Great holiday all in and really enjoyed this beach hotel and town of Alvor. The facilities provided were good esp the beach area with the shaded loungers - although you do need to be up early to ensure you get one (suggest no later than 9am). The public areas of the Alvor Praia though are a little dated and tired in style but this comment is more about personal choice than the hotel standard. We did need to raise on one occasion with the pool staff about the outdoor pool being dirty which was quite off putting to swim in. The hotel location is on the outskirts of Alvor so be prepared to walk or pay for taxis (8 to 10 euros per return trip). We only stayed for 7 days and we all said we should have stayed for 10 so says it all really.

We have just got back from a week at the Pestana Alvor Praia and i just want to say what a wonderful time we had.
The hotel is excellent although a lick of paint and few updates in the bathroom would make it just perfect.
Our rooms were 208 and 212 and although lacking in a real sea view the ground floor made it just perfect for easy access to the restaurant and pool without having to hang around for lifts to arrive.
From arriving to leaving the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful, from reception staff to the restaurant staff everyone makes you feel welcome and does their up most to attend to your every need.
The food was of a very high standard with fresh fruit and salad always available.
The atmosphere in the restaurant was perfect.
Breakfast taken on the terrace overlooking the pool with a beautiful sea view whilst listening to the piano which is played live every morning.
Easy access to a beautiful beach and coves which are perfect for lovely waters edge walks.

Now for the only negative point and one that i feel the hotel should address, the drinks are far too expensive in comparison to the rest of the surrounding bars and restaurants. I think it is a real shame that were driven to go elsewhere to spend the evening rather than use the hotel bar just because of overpriced drinks. Judging by the lack of people around I think that the majority of people probably felt the same way.

Having said that i still would have no hesitation on returning to the Alvor Praia in the future and can thoroughly recommend a visit to anyone that want a good quality, relaxing beach holiday.
You never know, with any luck when we return they may have reduced the prices of the beverages.

Stayed here in march on a Spa week. Beautiful hotel and lovely food. Staff were so friendly and attentive. The drinks were expensive though. I am going back to Algarve next year and will be staying in their sister hotel as i'm sure it will meet my expectations.

This was our first time in Portugal but will not be the last! It is just beautiful. Our sea view room was spacious and the view was marvellous. We could see the whole beach all the way along to Alvor and beyond. There is a private beach area with sun beds and shades and clear instructions for use. There was no scramble for sun beds around the pool, although people do tend to snap up their favourite spots quite early. On a couple of occasions we came back to the hotel at lunchtime and still found spare sun beds. Pool towels are provided again with clear instructions.

We found the staff cheerful and helpful without fail. The public rooms were comfortable and air conditioned. There is free wifi throughout the hotel, just ask for the password etc at reception.

Alvor itself is quiet during the day but lively at night with shops open until late and bars open until even later. Cab journey from hotel €5 including tip.

The food was good quality and plentiful, if not a bit boring after ten days, but then I find that everywhere.

The bar was expensive but then again all hotel bars are. The prices in Alvor are much cheaper.

We had a lovely time and all in all I think we will return here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a high sea view room

As I said before, the hotel location is perfect but the whole hotel needs upgrading (painting, new furniture, curtains etc). The staff are very friendly and polite but there is too few of them and you feel the hotel is understaffed. The drink prices are very high that makes guests stay away from the bar area (cheapest bottle of rosé is €19 which cost less than €4 in the nearby supermarket). The entertainments were average if not poor :( did not attract guests. During the breakfast a pianist plays some music that goes well with the view from the restaurant. A five star hotel should offer a lot more for the money than we have received.

Hotel OK But only 3 star. Garden room OK. Hotel clean. Theme nights in the restaurant were just a slant on the same food. Beach and sea lovely. Now for the part which spoiled the holiday for the majority of the people in the hotel. Drinks 5 times the price of the same drinks in bars in the village. Water 10 times the price. This resulted in nobody frequenting the hotels bars day or night which resulted in no atmosphere. Everyone walking or taking a taxi into the village. Thompson apparently have been complaining to the hotel about this without any success. Hence Thompson called a meeting of all of their guests to discuss any complaints they had and all complained about the same thing. Drinks too expensive and no atmosphere. I and many other I spoke to would never go back to this hotel. I don't feel as if I have been on holiday. Never again.

Room Tip: Don't book
