“A relaxing week”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2012

My friend and I stayed here all inclusive at the end of april
We found the staff very friendly and helpful, they all work hard to please the guests.
I don't personally understand the criticism of the food, we always had more than enough choice at mealtimes and the quality and range of meals was good.I think someone had probably commented on the main course "vegetarian" option as within a few days of us arriving that choice had increased to several dishes,I feel this shows the hotel is trying hard to cater to the guest needs and should be recognised.
Yes the food is not all piping hot but I have rarely found an all inclusive buffet that was. We certainly had no problems with it.
I also didn't see any "unsavory" guests while there and people seemed perfectly happy having drinks in the bar in the evenings.Yes there is some noise from the childrens entertainment downstairs but if you don't want to hear children enjoying themselves go to an adults only hotel.
The hotel is not "typically portugese" or "quaint" and if this is what you want you need to look elswhere, however we wanted a relaxing time in a well appointed, clean hotel and that is what we got.
The rooms were as shown in the brochure, excellent, the whole hotel is very modern.
The cooking equipment in the room is limited,as has been pointed out eleswhere, plates, cups, cutlery and glasses, enough to have a cold snack/salad or something from the microwave and make a cup of tea or coffee in your room but not to cook meals, then I think all inclusive is how this hotel is being marketed and what was available was a bonus, especially the full size fridge for your own water etc which you could get from the local supermarkets.
The grounds and pool were great, although it was a bit early in the season to make good use of them.
The Town is a short (approx 10 min) walk away and is down a bit of a hill however the free "train" is available if you don't want to walk.
We had great time here and would not hesitate to return.

We Stayed at the Alvor Baia in early May 2012. If we’d stayed B&B this would have been the best hotel we have ever stayed in for a holiday. Unfortunately we were staying all inclusive. The food is OK for all inclusive but the drinks are VERY poor.
The hotel staff were very helpful and pleasant and the place is very clean. The hotel was quite empty when we stayed only around 50 or so other guest’s.
The main swimming pool is VERY cold. I would have thought a newly built hotel wood have at least used solar heating to at least take the chill off the water!
The evening entertainment was also poor, a quiz night, a parrot show, or the entertainment team (2 people) dressing up in wigs and singing kids songs and a disco (a tape playing all night).
I would stay at this hotel again if I was travelling to the part of Portugal again, but not all inclusive!

Room Tip: The NON pool side rooms have a pleasant country side view. you can see the sea from the other side b...

We have just come back from a 4 day stay at this hotel and would like to point out the good and bad points as this is a new hotel.
Check in was good with no problems however we arrived at 11pm to be told that the all inclusive bar closes at 11pm and therefore we would have to pay for any drinks. As we had just arrived we thought the least they could have given us was a free bottle of water, also no food available in the hotel at that time of night not even a vending machine.
The rooms were very modernand clean with large balconies and nice plasma TV's on the wall, however the room we stayed in catered for 4 people yet only had 2 chairs on the balcony. The hotel caters for 1000 guests and when we stayed there were only 60 guests staying yet they put us in a room overlooking the carpark. You would think that it would be in their interest to give guests a nice view to add to the holiday experience especially when empty. we asked to change rooms and were charged an extra 50 euros.
The kids playground looked good and the spa pool was nice however they charged 10 euros per person for entry into the Spa.
The outside pool was nice and big, however for such a big hotel there were no outside toilets or bar meaning you had to go into the reception area everytime. If the hotel was busy this could cause alot of problems with wet slippery flooring.
The bar area inside was also very small for the size of the hotel.
The food was very repetitive and basically reheated from the day before and mixed with something different. The kids buffet was terrible, it consisted of a plate of lettuce, tomatoes, rice and some very dried out meat.
There was no entertainment unless you can call a memory stick full of songs stuck into a DJ set entertainment.
The hotel advertises a gym and hairdressers but when we asked where they were we got told they did not have them.

Room Tip: ask for a pool view

We stayed at the Alvor Baia for 7 nights and booked through Bookable Holidays it cost £790 for two including flights and transfers, which sounds reasonable. However the reality was very different, the staff were fairly unfriendly and unwilling to help. The food was very disappointing and kept at a steady 40 degrees, promoting bacteria growth it was never hot and the menu never changed for duration of our stay. We stayed all inclusive and although we're not really drinkers there's only a choice of 9 or 10 drinks and everything else including water is chargable.

The guests were also unsavory and if you want a relaxing break I'd suggest you avoid this hotel, the hotel seemed to be full of badly behaved, unsupervised children and this went on until around 11pm. The only entertainment provided is for children and again this was very loud and would ruin any hope of a quiet drink at the bar upstairs.

We also witnessed an occassion when another guest dropped cake on the floor and then picked this back up with the cake slice putting both back on to the buffet stand, before walking off!!

The only other two points I feel we should make is not to use A2B transfers as they don't answer the phone to confirm departure times, this took 4 hours on the last day of the holiday. The departure transfer was also 30 minutes late and then drove around Portimao for another 45 minutes as he was not sure if he had to collect another passenger, by the time we got to the airport the final boarding call was made and we very almost missed our flights. The other issue and to us the worst was a bar/restaurant on the beach closest to the hotel named the Tropico, they served my wife a burger which she started to eat before finding a maggot wiggling in the pink meat! She is now currently sufferering the affects of food poisoning. When trying to bring this to the attention of the restaurant owner he quickly removed the food and offered another burger but at this point we were both horrified and declined the offer. Even though we had not eaten much food and was unable to finish due to the obvious hygiene issues, we were told we had to pay for the food! This is a failing business as they are quite desperate for custom and appear pushy, we were unable to leave until the bill was settled and there was a hostile atmosphere. The chef tried to state the maggot came from the salad and this can happen and was flippant about the situation, however I tried to explain maggots eat meat and not salad and it was evident that the maggot was burrowed in to the meat.

To summarise you'd have to be mad to stay at this hotel and to be honest I would give Alvor a wide berth as for the money there are some really nice places to visit. We've travelled a lot and can always see the good in places, we are not moaners and write this review with a heavy heart but feel we must warn other holiday makers.

A lovely hotel which was very clean and lovely rooms however the kids club which was heavily sold to us at the time of booking was very disappointing. The kids club was only ran 2 days a week and did not always start on time and really was not much of a club when all they did was a bit of painting. Also the hotels understanding of catering for a vegetarian has alot to be said for. Location is quite and not much to do locally. This hotel is more for those looking for a quite break maybe for a couple but definately not for a family with young kids who are looking for enterainment for them such as a kids club and not much of evening entertainment either.

Room Tip: keep away from the middle part of the hotel as the night time music is very load

Stayed in Alvor previously and really like the location. The resort is quiet but with lots of interesting walks and a lovely tidal estuary with lots of wildlife.

This new hotel opened for a couple of months in July 2011 (with mixed reviews) which I was a little concerned about, but the price was good so I booked. On arrival we were very pleasantly surprised at the service we received. Bellboys to take luggage to room, reception staff very friendly and efficient. Only slight niggle was lack of information regarding the hotel facilities but we soon found everything with no issues at all. The hotel decor is minimalistic and I thought this would be a problem for me, but the atmosphere is fine and not an issue at all.

The rooms are every bit as good as the photos on the website suggest. Fantastic layout with lots of space. If you want a sunny balcony then opt for the rooms with a pool/sea view, as the rest face out over the car park and are in shade most of the day. This is an extra charge on the booking that I didn't take up but I e mailed the hotel prior to arrival requesting high floor (four floors in tota) and pool view and they allocated us exactly that. Rooms have individual heating/cooling, 2 plasma TV's. It should be noted that the kitchen is very limited with sink, fridge, microwave, 2 ring halogen hob but no kettle, no cooking utensils, no oven and only one pan. However, the hotel is totally all inclusive if booked through First Choice so this is not a big problem. The only other possible drawback is the lack of drawers and hanging space. For the two of us there was enough room but for a family it would be difficult. Rooms are cleaned daily.

Breakfast is fine - toaster, boiled, scrambled and fried eggs, sausages, tomatoes, nice bacon and beans. Also have continental breakfast options and cereals.
Lunch and Dinner - meals could have been more varied but always had four choices of main - usually vegetarian, 2 meats and fish. Also very good pasta choices with 2 or 3 different sauces. There has been some bad reviews about the food but the salad bar was very good and we enjoyed every meal we ate. Freshly baked bread rolls each day. Only improvement would be to put potatoes onto the menu - chips every meal but no boiled potatoes. There is a microwave in the dining room if you prefer your food hotter than it is served.

Every member of staff at this hotel was friendly, efficient and eager to help. Laurenco the barman was especially attentive.

Security staff patrolled the grounds constantly - this was reassuring rather than obtrusive. One day my purse fell out of my bag at the front of the hotel as I got out of a taxi - by the time I had realised it missing and went to Reception (3 or 4 minutes) it had been handed in and after asking me some security questions it was returned to me with all contents in tact. Safety deposit box only cost 10.5 euros/week (cheapest we have ever had) and no deposit required. Pool towels also free of charge with no deposit, although they will charge you 40 euros if you don't return them. Didn't use the spa but several people did (because weather was a little chilly some days) and only heard good reviews.

Didn't use the swimming pool as the weather was not warm enough during our stay and it was quite windy around the pool area. It looked fantasic though and I am sure that in high season it would be full.

Overall, I would say that this hotel is superb for couples; perhaps not as ideal for families with children. Good food, excellent grounds and rooms, top staff. Entertainment not brilliant, but the bars are relaxed and comfortable. I would stay there again without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask for pool/sea view room for a sunny balcony.

The transfer is about 1 hour 30mins from FAO airport however this soon passed. The hotel is located up a private road with a private hospital adjacent. A Spar shop is located about 5 min walk away and is equipped with all your essentials. Water is priced at 50cents for 1.5litre.

The beach is 20mins away and a complimentary train runs from the hotel and back at regular intervals. Alvor town centre consists of a lovely harbour and amble bars and authentic restaurants. Again this is approx 15-20min walk down a small incline. Bus stops are located near the hotel. We took a taxi ride to a large shopping complex (aqua shopping centre) about ten mins drive away and this costed €7-8. The centre has a primark, h&m, and loads of eating establishments.

The hotel itself is very modern with a quirky feel, I believe it's in it's second year and has an occupancy of 1100people. When we stayed the hotel had an occupancy of only 100-120people at the most and I would worry in peak season if the hotel could cope with its first year as all inclusive.

Food Is average. Two restaurants one called 'green' and the other 'blue'. Only the green restaurant was open during our stay. Breakfast was mix of fruits, cereals and selection of hot items. English tea always available.
Lunch and dinner were very similar. The buffet consists of pasta, chips and pork every day. monkfish and cod, turkey and beef also made appearances. Altogether we found the selection small and repetitive. The restaurant has a drink station where house wines (only red/white), beer and soft drinks were on a self service basis. When the restaurants are closed a snack area is set up with burgers, hot dogs, crisps, cheese, ham, juice etc.

Drinks are all local brands, the beer is quiet nice however the wine was a little ropey! Cocktail of the day is available and hot drinks are no trouble. Your key card acts as your charge card for your all inclusive package so it is asked for when you order drinks! No nasty wristbands! Entertainment was none existent, parrot show, bingo and karaoke but due to the low occupancy this was hosted in the lobby bar which was cramped and lacked atmosphere. There is a larger evening bar downstairs  but this was not opened during our stay.
There is a games room with air hockey, pool and arcade machine

Rooms were fantastic, consisting of a big bathroom with power shower, living room with sofa bed, kitchenette with microwave and fridge. Large king size bed with a large balcony.

What you don't need to take
Pool Towels (provided for €40 deposit on your room-no cash needed)
Iron/board delivered to your room on request.

Free Wifi is available in public areas and some rooms close to the lobby.

Pool area is large and no sun bed reservation was required. A children's play area is located at one end with a children's club which I assume opens in peak season.
The hotel has an indoor spa and pool area. The circuit package gives you access to the Turkish bath, sauna, pool and invigorating showers for a cost of €10 a day and you also need to purchase a showercap at a cost of €2 for use in the indoor pool. It's worth noting you can leave the spa and return later in the day without being re-charged.

Verdict: ultra modern hotel, however food and atmosphere let it down. A few tweaks and it would be perfect.
