We visited last year taking in 3 days skiing on the local slopes. The hotel seemed to be good value within a short distance of Bergamo airport and the accommodation price was good.
On arrival we were greeted by the friendly manager who was happy to explain the local area to us. We checked in to the rooms which are clean and comfortable, and headed a few hundred yards up the road to the slopes where we got a few hours in before the light began to fade. Back at the hotel, we'd agreed to upgrade to HB so we sat down to an excellent evening meal. All of our party would have eaten anything and though the choice was limited in comparison to a restaurant, we prefer this because we knew the food was fresh, and it was. Excellent simple food, very tasty, good quality local ingredients.
The best indication of our satisfaction is the fact that we have booked to go again this season. My dad and my uncle keep on about how much they enjoyed everything about the trip and I think they'd have been very disappointed if they were not going back to the same hotel again. I must say I am looking forward to the food again. The hotel had a nice little bar also which we frequented both nights of our visit.
A little local advice, the skiing is very good value and the area is used a lot by Italians who drive up from the City at the weekend. If you can only ski for around 3 hours like me, you can pay for a few hours instead of a whole day. There are some good nursery slopes and a few decent tests in the area not far from the hotel, and a short drive to Monte Pora gives you a much more open area, with some more challenging and interesting runs.
We found that the food and beverages in the area were good value, in fact very cheap compared with places like France. You could get a decent coffee at between 1Eu-1.5Eu in most café bars, you could get a sandwich for around 4 Euros also. Beer was similar price if not a touch cheaper than back home but always very good. We also got a freshly made pizza each at a pizzeria one lunchtime, and that was around 8Eu. Because we were half board we did not try any of the restaurants in the town, and these restaurants did not seem to display prices on the outside (we did make an effort to look at every restaurant we walked past). I cannot therefore say how much an evening meal out might cost. There are some excellent food merchants in Castione, selling cured meats, cheeses, mushrooms, olives, wines, beers, etc.
So for nightlife, I found Castione very quiet in comparison with other places I have been in Switzerland, France and Austria. It suited us for this visit but if Apres Ski is your main reason for travelling, I might suggest you look for a busier town.
The fact that you can fly to Milan so cheaply, hire a car so cheaply, eat, drink and ski so cheaply in the area, its a brilliant little place to visit.
Really looking forward to going back.
