“Could be perfect- if the volcano was the only smoker”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013

Until three years ago my partner and I rarely went back to our holiday destinations. Variety, after all, is the spice of life. Since then we have been to the Therasia Resort 3 times. Nuff said. With a location as excellent as this they couldn't easily go wrong and they don't. The rooms are beautifully appointed. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food at the gourmet Cappero restaurant gets better every year and is now star quality. Don't miss it. Yes. Portions are small at the Cappero just as they are in all the food outlets apart from the breakfast buffet. The Therasia would not be the destination of choice for anyone who wants a 24-7 drip feed of sugar, fat and carb. The Therasia is just what a holiday destination for our times should be. You will probably leave in better health than when you arrived, having enjoyed wonderful produce in quantities that won't reduce your life expectancy an taken some opportunities for gentle or strenuous exercise. Skip the excellent shuttle sometimes. Take the beutiful walk to town. Walk up the volcano at least once. It's worth it.

I agree with the previous reviewer in respect of smoking in outside dining areas. There was a memorable occasion in the open air pool bar. Just as we were starting our salad, a couple sat down at the very next table and lit up- which was extraordinary since the entire restaurant was empty at the time. When we moved to another table, they complained to the waiter that we were being 'rude'. Some smokers, admittedly a minority, vent their frustration at the indoor ban by trying to make the outdoor space their own, intentionally making al fresco eating and drinking a no go zone for non-smokers. It can be a problem on the room balcony as well if a smoker is on the terrace next door. We had to change rooms at the Therasia 2 years ago for precisely that reason. But can the Therasia really be expected to take a lead by banning smoking from outdoor areas? Sadly, the al fresco nicotine cloud is the way of the world just at the moment and it needs to be addressed at governmental level. Someone should do a protest cover of the old Martha and the Vandellas track. "Everybody's smoking- they're smoking in the street".

This is a beautiful hotel in a distinctive way with some North African influences in Sicilian style.
This is a special place. Staff is not intrusive but attentive and demonstrate lots of charm. Very helpful with any enquiry and will arrange whatever they can for you. Good complimentary shuttle service to the port some less than 10 minutes away. Vulcano is not the most impressive island in the Aeolian archipelago but Therasia is likely to be the best resort. Food is exceptional, position of the resort is exceptional and staff very well trained and organised.
Beds could be a little more plush and inviting. Smoking in the dining areas is a big problem for non-smokers (a majority of tourists these days). Smokers destroy the otherwise beautiful and clean atmosphere and should be banned as eating is in covered areas even though open to the sea. Will be back.

We stayed for 10 days with our two children aged 10 and 13. The room was fabulous, a large room with ample room for us all. The children both had proper made up beds. The terrace was HUGE and the view just amazing!!!! We could not have wished for a better base for a 10 day stay. The bathroom was lovely and big and the cleaning staff were great, very fast in their work and really did a great job. Our bed was huge and very comfortable. Sheets good cotton. Mini bar stocked with free water and fruit juices. So - room and cleaning staff 12 out of 10!!! Really great value and service.

One downside was the internet connection in the bedroom. My husband and I had to work quite a bit and we had to keep going to the lobby to connect and send mails. I'm not sure why this is, but the connection kept failing. Staff tried to sort it out, but it was intermittant the whole of the stay.

Pool area was lovely too. Beautiful view onto Lipari. Great sunbathing terraces - many little ones tucked away, so even if you are a couple, wanting a bit of privacy, you can find a secluded spot for the day. Sea bathing area would have been fabulous, had it not been for the jellyfish. But they were all over Sicily this summer. Not much you can do about it, apart from put your snorkel mask on and check out the water as soon as you get in. We didn't get stung, but were careful each time.

Breakfast was simply delicious! A huge array of choice and amazing cakes and local breads and honeys!!! Breakfast area is very pretty, with view on the sea. We felt that some staff were not as "up to speed" as others however. Some needed several repeated instructions before getting the right cup of tea or coffee. Feel that (some) were lacking the great skills the others had. Strangely, we had rather loud live piano music every morning, from 8am????????? WHY, may I ask? Piano in the evening, yes, but who wants live loud music first thing in the morning????....

Food at lunch and dinner could still be improved on choice and quality. Not great value for money, compared to the hotel room prices. Dinner at the "posh" restaurant was a complete rip-off. We ate far better meals at simple fish shacks. Wine waiter and staff were lovely though. Dinner at the normal restaurant was also very poor - limited choice from menu, very smal portions ( I had to order 2 pasta dishes for starter and main as the dishes are so small).

So we had most of our meals outside of the hotel for this reason, at local fish restaurants.

Overall, we loved the hotel, apart from a few areas for improvement and would say:
- Rooms are fab and great quality. Whole hotel lovely.
- Most staff are amazing friendly and helpful, with just a couple of exception of staff that weren't really with it
- Food (apart from breakfast) could definitely be improved on, as it is obvious the hotel is trying to make their margins there, to customers' disadvantage

We spend 3 nights in this hotel during our holidays on Sicily. The location of the hotel is very beautiful, the island Vulcano is very small, typical and charming. Therasia is a very nice hotel. We swam in the sea, we enjoyed the quiet and relax atmosphere of the hotel. The food is good and the personell is well trained. We had a very beautiful room, with fantastic view on the sea, Lipari and we could see the smoke coming out of the vulcano. We surely want to go back to this hidden jewel.

We have just returned from a week's holiday in this hotel. The views are absolutely amazing and thoroughly recommend staying here. The staff are wonderful and are always willing to help and advise when necessary. Our room was very clean and we received clean sheets and towels daily. The facilities are excellent - especially the infinity pool. We would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: High floor sea view room is amazing!!

my wife and i stayed here for the first 4 nights of our honeymoon, and couldn't have been more impressed. The staff were amazing before we even arrived (thanks Carmen), liaising with us to pick us up from the ferry terminal and also organising a suprise boat trip with a picnic and bottle of wine for the 3rd day we were there.
The food in the 2 restaraunts is amazing, on our last night we ate in Il Cappero (reservation essential) and indulged on the 8 course tasting menu which was amazingly tasty and very skillfully done - the highlight being the dessert made to look like breakfast.
The views are simply stunning, and its the perfect place to lounge by the pool or private beach with a nice drink, or one of their delicious pizzas at lunch.

We also used the benessere centre to indulge in massage and the hydrotherapy pool which was very nice and not something i'd usually do. Its in a good location a short walk or courtesy bus to the centre of vulcano, from where we climbed the vulcano for amazing views of the islands. We also went sea kyaking which the hotel arranged pickup/dropoff for as well as the boat trip.

breakfast selection is huge, fresh with range of cooked to order eggs, pastries, cakes, cold meats, breads (try the milk bread) yoghurts juices and even spumante

We choose the Therasia as it was different from your normal Maldives honeymoon etc. It was a perfect honeymoon great staff good food beautifull room and views.

We didnt want to do anything but lay by the pool in the sun somewhere which is what we did. We were upgraded to a room with a huge balcony overlooking the pool and the best in the hotel of the other islands.

My only downside was that i dont like fish and about 90% of the menu is fish ! Apart from at lunch time when you can grab a pizza. The breakfast was the best meal of the day with a massive selection it was great.

The smell everyone talks about is of the sulphur baths by the port which is where the smell stays. We were there for 8 days and did not smell anything the whole time we were there. The island has a small town which for us was a bit rubbish nothing really there apart from shops selling tacky stuff for the island hoppers. Also the restaurants in town all looked a bit rubbish.

All in all a really lovely stay though for what we wanted and the hotel staff were lovely. Oh and the Spa is great to relax in as well. Thanks all
